Primary Source Report Name: Bob Sudduth Date: 2-16-2009 Title of Document: Congregational Church at Tallmadge, Ohio; Freedom Church at Freedom Ohio Source (please be specific): The Congregational Church at Tallmadge, OH and the Freedom Church at Freedom, OH. Both cities were in the same county until 1840. Brief Explanation of Document: The Congregational Church at Tallmadge was built in 1822, with the interior finished in 1825. This building is now owned by the Ohio Historical Society and is an example of the Federal style of architecture. The Federal style was a combination of Doric and Ionic styles. The Freedom Church was built in 1844. This building was originally in the Tuscan style of architecture. Possible uses for research paper or lesson plan: These two buildings demonstrate very different styles of architecture, which show changing community values over a relatively short period of time and distance (the buildings are approximately thirteen miles apart.) Changes in the interior design of the Congregational Church also demonstrates shifting societal perspectives during the Nineteenth Century. Students will also gain an appreciation for the importance of architecture as historical evidence. How does this document relate to other documents: Study of these two buildings can reveal change in community identity over distance and time. Study of the practices within the Congregational Church also reveals the evolution of egalitarianism during the Federal Period and afterwards.
