Broken System Dysfunction, Abuse, and Impunity in the Indian Police
(Lucknow, August 7, 2009) – Human Rights Watch is pleased to invite you to a news conference to be held in Lucknow on Friday, August 7 at 2:30 p.m. We will discuss the recent release of a report, “Broken System: Dysfunction, Abuse, and Impunity in the Indian Police,” which documents ongoing violations by police in India and the lack of accountability that fuels abuse. The report also examines the ways in which everyday police working conditions contribute to and even encourage human rights violations. Broken System calls for a comprehensive overhaul of police law and practices in order to hold police accountable, significantly reduce violations by police, and build rights-respecting police forces.
