What is Global Warming? Global warming is the observed and projected

increases in the average temperature of Earth's atmosphere and oceans. In Short Global warming means “A set of changes to the Earth's climate, or long-term weather patterns”.

The Earth's average temperature rose about

0.6° Celsius (1.1° Fahrenheit) in the 20th century”

Causes of Global Warming.. Greenhouse effect. Carbon Dioxide from Power Plants and

emitted from Cars. Water Vapor in the Atmosphere Increasing Methane gas, Nitrous oxide. Deforestation . Carbon in Atmosphere and Ocean.

Facts about Global Warming The number of emperor penguins in the

Peninsula have 300 breeding pairs to just nine! Arctic ice is rapidly disappearing the region might gave its first completely ice free summer by 2040 or even earlier.

Effects of Global Warming. Increase of temperature on the earth by

about 3° to 5° C (5.4° to 9° Fahrenheit) by the year 2100.

Rise of sea levels by at least 25 meters (82

feet) by the year 2100.

Changes in temperature and precipitation

patterns increase the frequency, duration, and intensity of other extreme weather events, such as floods, droughts, heat waves, and tornadoes.

Sea levels are rising due to thermal expansion

of the ocean, in addition to melting of land ice.

Increased evaporation change

Local climate

 Glacier retreat and disappearance

 Acidification Oxygen depletion

Facts about Global Warming About 2000 of Indonesia’s island could

disappear by 2030 due to the rising sea levels. Many island in the Sunderbans in India have already disappeared. According to one study, in last 30years, nearly 31square miles of the Sunderbans have vanished entirely! An average home is responsible for more harmful CO2 emissions than an average car produces every year.

Effects of Global Warming on our Lives 

Significantly increased precipitation – Leads to

Greater prevalence of floods

Drying in the Sahel, the Mediterranean, southern Africa and parts of southern Asia -

Crop failures and increased regional conflict.

Effects of Global Warming on our Lives Annual average Arctic sea ice extent shrunk by

2.7 % per decade-

Effects on wildlife, particularly polar bears

More intense and longer droughts

Cold days, cold nights and frost less frequent. Hot days, hot nights, and heat waves more

frequent. Snow cover is projected to contract.

Facts about Global Warming Up to 72% of bird species in Australia and

more then a third in Europe could go to extinct due to global warming! In 2002, a chunk of ice in Antarctica, larger then the state of Rhode island, weakened by warm winds, collapsed into the sea!

Effects of Global Warming in India The glacier Gangotri are melting due to

rise in temperature.. On average, floods affect about 5,000 square kilometers of land and 4.2 million people in India each year

 In July 2005, the western Indian state -

Maharashtra was hit by the hardest monsoon rains ever recorded. Nearly a meter of rain fell in 24 hours, causing extreme flooding in Mumbai and elsewhere in the state.

Global Warming has changed World's

rainfall patterns. The 2008 Bihar flood, which is one of the worst floods in the history of the Indian state of Bihar.

Global warming is happening more quickly

in some parts of the world than others. (Antarctica, Australia) The Antarctic Peninsula is particularly

sensitive to small rises in the annual average temperature

There is no unusual significant loss of ice of

any kind from the larger 96% of Antarctica that is not the Peninsula. Rising temperatures cause ice shelves to break up - as they are floating already this will not affect sea levels The temperature of Antarctica as a whole is predicted to rise by a small amount over the next 50 years.

Facts about Global Warming Grass has started to grow in Antarctica in

areas that were covered by ice sheets and glaciers previously. Warmer temperatures are allowing grass to survive through winter for the first time!

India Climate Change Profile What is the water situation in India? Average water consumption around the world is about 53 liters per head per day. In India, we expect to soon have only about 20 liters available per head per day. The glaciers are receding from the Himalayan Mountains.

Why are these glaciers so important? The waters from the Himalayan glaciers provide water for about 70 percent of all the people in Asia. In India, we have three major rivers - the Indus, Ganges, and Brahmaputra – and it is likely that they will drain to small rivers. In most of northern India, there will be no water. Right now there are floods. The flood area has increased from 25 million hectares to 60 millions hectares in the last 30 years.

Facts about Global Warming Globally electricity generation is the biggest

source of CO2 emissions, amounting to 37%! The amount of ice in the arctic at the end of summer 2005 was the smallest seen in 27 years.

Global Warming Solutions We can't stop production of Green house gases but we

can maintain it’s concentration i.e. stabilizing GHG. Using straight vegetable oil for fuel can lower greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 100 percent, greatly reducing air pollution. Maintaining Carbon dioxide level in atmosphere.

Planting more trees can help to stabilize

GHG.

Reduction in use of chemicals and fuels. Less consumption of

non- decomposable substances like plastic.

Reduce the amount of heating your house

or office needs Reduce water heating requirements Get low energy light bulbs

Get more efficient refrigeration
