What Is BLUETOOTH 

First of all, in case some of you don't know, Bluetooth is the common name for the new short range wireless technology that is able to transmit voice and data while working with mobile phones, music players, personal digital assistants (PDA) and computers. BZUpages.com

Bluetooth Name 

Okay, now for some history. The Bluetooth technology was given its name in reference to the Danish king Harald "Bluetooth" Blaatand. He was the one who unified Denmark and Norway between 940 and 985 AD. The reason Bluetooth is named after him is because it is known to unite the telecom and computing industries today. Makes sense, right?! It's all about unity!

Why is it called Bluetooth? 

The name Bluetooth draws its inspiration from the 10th century king of Denmark, Harald Bluetooth. History suggests that Harald's aggressive diplomatic policies led to the unification of previously warring tribes of Denmark, Norway and Sweden. Like Harald, Bluetooth technology is about communication - allowing different devices from cell phones to televisions, cars and even earpieces to communicate and network with each other in one simple uninterrupted flow.

Why is it called Bluetooth? 

The founders of the Bluetooth SIG felt the name was fitting because: 1) Bluetooth technology was first developed in Scandinavia (Cellular), and 2) Bluetooth technology is able to unite differing industries such as the cell phone, computing, and automotive markets. Bluetooth wireless technology simplifies and combines multiple forms of wireless communication into a single, secure, low-power, low-cost, globally available radio frequency. BZUpages.com

History of Bluetooth Technology 

The Bluetooth movement was launched in 1994 by Ericsson, a Swedish company, in order to eliminate clutter in homes and offices. In 1998, Bluetooth technology was starting to take shape and led to the development of the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG); the founding members IBM, Intel, Nokia, Toshiba and Ericsson officially threw their weight behind Bluetooth technology. Within six months, the success and versatility of Bluetooth technology was apparent, and other companies joined the initiative.

From there, adoption of the Bluetooth standard exploded, growing into the global presence that it is today. Bluetooth Technology Over the Years 



When Bluetooth was officially introduced in 1998, its intended basic purpose was to be a wire replacement technology in order to rapidly transfer voice and data. There were many doubters who believed Bluetooth would be a distant memory in just a couple of years. However, multiple years have passed and Bluetooth continues to make strides and advancements everyday.

A lot has changed since the first Bluetooth Core Specification Version was introduced in 1998. Over the past couple years Bluetooth technology has really begun to take giant leaps forward. In 2003, the Bluetooth SIG began a major overhaul of the Bluetooth specification with the announcement of version 2.1. Then, in 2004, Bluetooth version 2.0 + EDR (Enhanced Data Rate) was introduced. Devices using version 2.0 + EDR began to hit the market in late 2005.

Evolution of the Bluetooth Standard 

Bluetooth technology was designed to permit data and voice exchange at rates up to1 Mbps. Initially, the standard used short range radio links in the 2.GHz Instrumentation Scientific and Medical (ISM) "free band." The early coverage range of Bluetooth devices hovered around 5 meters, but now - after expanding into the 700-800 kb bandwidth - it generally attains a range of about 10 meters,

Evolution of the Bluetooth Standard 

Where its seamless radio connections create what's known as a Personal Wireless Network. The transmission frequency range for Bluetooth sits between 2.4 and 2.4835 GHz, with a maximum transfer speed of, typically, 2.0 Mbps (some devices manage up to 3 Mbps). The range, effectiveness, and speed of Bluetooth technology continues to grow, thanks to the work of the Bluetooth SIG.

Bluetooth Technology Works 

Bluetooth is a short range wireless digital standard aimed at linking cell phone,computer up to 30 feet.



Unlike infra-red, Bluetooth does not require lineof-sight positioning of connected units.



Bluetooth networking transmits data via lowpower radio waves. It communicates on a frequency of 2.45 gig hertz (actually between 2.402 GHz and 2.480 GHz, to be exact). BZUpages.com

Bluetooth Technology Works 

Bluetooth uses a technique called frequency hopping that makes it rare for more than one device to be transmitting on the same frequency at the same time. The walls in your house won't

stop a Bluetooth signal. 

Connection Establishment States 

Standby: the default state; a low power state in which only the native clock is running.



Connection: the device is connected to the piconet as a master or slave. Page: device has issued a page. Used by the master to activate and connect to a slave. Master sends page msg by transmitting slave’s DAC (device access code) in different hop channels. Page Scan: device is listening for a page with its own DAC Master response: master receives a page response from a slave. The master can enter the connection state or return to the page state to page for other slaves. Slave response: a slave responds to a page from the master. If connection setup succeeds, device enters connection state, otherwise page scan state Inquiry: device has issued an inquiry to find the identity of the devices within range Inquiry scan: device is listing for an inquiry Inquiry response: a device that has issued an inquiry receives an inquiry response
