LESSON PLAN (Due Feb. 26th) Group members: Katie Deneys; Ashley Tobalsky; Amy VanProosdy Title: See, Touch, Taste, Explore! Target audience: Location: 1st floor Date of presentation: Preschoolers (age 4- CPS Gesell Daycare 3-28-2008 at 1:00 PM 5) Performance Objectives: Explore and become more familiar of the wide variety of foods through three different hands-on activities that focus on using different senses. Our assumption is that they have a general understanding of colors, shapes, sizes, tastes, and textures prior to learning, but have not integrated using them to explore various foods. By the end of the presentation we expect them to have become more familiar with food, and to increase their excitement about exploring a variety of foods on their own by using their senses. Content Outline: Begin by introducing ourselves and get them excited to explore different foods. Ask a few questions to engage participation and to find out how much they already know. (Spend 5 minutes on this). Then divide them up into three groups and send them off “marching” to one of three different stations. Have them all sit in a circle with you at the head of the circle so they can all see. Station 1: See! Focuses on different colors, shapes, and sizes of food. Station 2: Touch! Focuses on feeling different foods. Station 3: Taste! Focuses on different tastes of foods. Each group will

Teaching strategies & Justification: Goal is to move children from precontemplation stage of change to contemplation stage in food choices. We will do this by keeping the material simple and memorable. For our teaching method we will use minimal lecture, and more simple hands-on activities and group discussion to keep their attention and make the information more memorable. At each station, we will demonstrate the activity first, and then have the group perform it. Dress will be casual and comfortable since we will be interacting with the kids. Use simple

spend 5-7 minutes at each station. After time is up at one, they will “march” to the music playing to the next station (This will help to keep their attention and maintain focus). Upon completion of the station activities, groups will reunite to one large group where we will summarize what they’ve learned and evaluate their level of understanding by a final activity. Final group activity will take 5 minutes. End by giving each child a sticker.

words and speak loudly. Show excitement with the material and be animated when talking to maintain their focus. When at stations, be seated at their level and keep eye contact. In order to keep their focus and attention when transitioning between stations, we will have them march to the beat of music while moving to the next station.

Evaluation: Preschoolers will be evaluated while performing at each station based upon how well they are engaged and participate with the activity. At the end of the presentation the three groups will combine and perform a final group activity using material learned at the stations. References: Hart, B. and T. R. Risley (1995).
