Chapter I

Conflict

Conflict in literature is a strong disagreement between people or groups. According to Grace Fleming (2016) it’s a necessary element of a story. It drives the narrative forward and is what compels the reader to stay up all night reading in hopes of some sort of closure. In the novel, The Ale’s Boy Feast by Jeffrey Overstreet, the major conflict is when their king, Cal-raven was kidnapped by Seers and Deathweed. Seers and Deathweed were friends with Cal-raven before because their family was close to each other that no one can separate them. They were childhood best friends and their kingdoms were allies. But when their parents die, Deathweed opened-up his feelings to her sister that he was envy to their childhood best friend Cal-raven. That emotion of Deathweed towards Cal-raven grew, and that emotion influenced Seers. And the siblings want to take the place of their best friend that’s why they made plan, they made a trap, and that trap succeeded. And the people in his kingdom, they remain in his place even without their king during calamitous attempt of Seers and Deathweed in putting House Abascar’s down. So to get his people bow them, they kill people who were against their laws because they have taken the place of Cal-raven. And they feed the minds of the people that their king just vanished and disappeared like bubbles. But then his people doesn’t believe them and from that melee when the king was missing, there’s his son that is eager to find him, to search for his father King Cal-raven and he is Rescue. He gathered his friends, Malefyx Xa, Skaribex Xa, Jayda Weese, Zan ry Wren, Tabor Jan and Brevolo. They are his friends ever since he was a kid. Upon searching his father, he found out a secret that everybody will be shocked. But still, Rescue didn’t lose hope in finding his father because he knows that God is with him always, so as his father.

2

And the story about this novel mostly talks about love to everyone, to forgive someone and lastly, our faith t God. The significance of having these kinds of characteristics makes you feel a better person. And the minor conflict of this is when Rescue found out the culprit in kidnapping his father. He encountered a traitor, his father’s trusted best friends but he did not felt any anger towards them because he believes in God and the saying that if someone condemns you, just pray to them and you will have the kingdom of the Lord and to stay humble because that’s the right thing to do even if they caused him a lot of pain.

Chapter II

The Resolution Taking up something that you don’t own will cause you a lot of problem. And only Seers and Deathweed are the one who can really tell where Cal-raven is. But they are hard to find in order for Rescue to ask where his father is, but then upon roving the Expanse there are beautiful forests, once beautiful but now they are haunted and bloodthirsty because of the slavery of Seers and Deathweed. While Rescue walks the land cracked and he falls and he discovered a slender thread of hope in the dark. And he dare lead his friends because they are desperate enough to find Cal-raven and there was a secret river, a river flows silently and there they follow the path where the water goes. Meanwhile they’ve met a wyrm named Scharr Ben Fray, the wyrm can talk to the inner minds of people that’s why he answers the question in the mind of Rescue, “I know you’re searching for your father, and it’s my honor to help you, son of the great king, Cal-raven. You must be eager to

know where he was and who were the culprits behind this mess, says the dragon.” (p. 102)

And Rescue took that opportunity to look at his father and save him from danger caused by his trusted friends. And then they found him and he looks pitiful. And they took him and while drawing him from the place where he had been founded he said all the things that had happened to him and who were the culprits behind the scene. The information that his father revealed it unlocked the questions in the mind of Rescue, so with as her friends. And they are eager to find them to pay from the problems that they’ve caused, but then they are indeed lucky because Rescue have the forgiving heart just like his father Cal-raven. Seers and Deathweed did not appear anymore but they left a letter to Cal-raven like they are asking for forgiveness and they explain reason why they’ve done kidnapping him. And in the last sentence of the letter is “Im am really sorry my childhood best friend. We’ve caused you a lot of problem, we even tried to kill you because of jealousy and that I am really sorry, and I hope deep in your heart you can find forgiveness and we promise not to disturb you anymore, but I hope we be can best friends again Cal-raven.”p. 362

And Rescue became at ease because he can finally say that he made it, he saved his father, and he can’t reach that success without the help of his God. And I will agree with the plan of the author, Jeffrey Overstreet because the Rescue, the protagonist, he just stay calm and trust in the Lord that everything will going to be okay, because that’s the right thing to do. Don’t plant any anger in your heart towards other person and we should always be humble at all times because having enemies will make your life miserable, that is why we should be good at all times because it will help us to achieve a better life, not only today but for the future also.

Chapter III

The Protagonist The protagonist in this novel is Rescue, twenty-two year old man, he was the son of King Calraven and Queen Mullagee, but she is now the better seat. He is tall with the height of 6’1’’ and a wavy hair and has the clothes of being a prince. And he was former errand runner, a maker of wine and a gifted firewalker; he can walk through flames without burning because that is an ability of a child of a Royal family and another ability of Rescue is he can talk with his fellow royal bloods through inner minds. And he is the one who rescue people from the collapse of their kingdom, the House Abascars’ from the slavery of Seers and Deathweed. He has six best friends namely, Malefyx Xa, Skaribex Xa, Jayda Weese, Zan ry Wren, Tabor Jan and Brevolo, they were the one whom Rescue grew with. Based on how I imagine, he looks similar to the illustration below.

He loves his parents so much, and he can even risk himself to save the life of his parents. He is very helpful and he doesn’t hesitate to help people who are in need. Like when a man needs help in pushing a cart of big jars that contain wine, he presented to help him. “Hey Mr. Let me help you pushing your cart. You are probably tired. Just please let me help you… Don you know that I really love to serve people just like my father? And it’s really my pleasure to carry this Mr. I hope you don’t mind.” Pp. 183-184 And the only thing that everybody should admire to Rescue is his forgiving heart and a brave heart. He doesn’t mind if the people are related to him or what. Even if they did something that can really annoy him, he wouldn’t they just forgive him and he’ll just ignore them. And when he found out that his father is missing he was brave enough to take a risk, even in gambling himself to save him even though he doesn’t have any idea who were the culprit is. In addition to that forgiving heart, it is really true that he have that heart because in tiny situations that almost in normal people if they’ve done something towards you they are easily triggered, unlike him, he have the patience, the merciful heat. Just like the things that Seers and Deathweed made. He didn’t plant any anger towards them. And lastly he has the faith to our mighty God, that even if it is hard to find someone who doesn’t want to see you still he has the faith that he will see his father again. Despite the fact that he has many problems from their kingdom and the problem that his father was missing made his faith to God stronger and deeper because he knows that God will provide everything that we needed in the perfect time. As a quotation says, a beautiful picture comes from an ugly film. This quotation really means to us, that even if we have faced many problems from those experiences they have learned their lessons. And if there are bad happenings that come into your life, don't take it in negative way but take it in positive way. THE ALE’S BOY FEAST | Jeffrey Overstreet/ Analysis by YKLRosete

Chapter IV

Theme and Life Lessons

Theme is similar to the title of a work. Theme is associated with the truth. But it is the artist’s truth – the way in which he views reality. It is a reality viewed through a humanitarian lens which is often confused with politics. Social issues become politicized and viewed as propaganda when disagreement or self-interest exists. And it’s important to have lessons in a book because it is useless to read if you will not gain something. “So many people cling to what’s not theirs and refuse their own invitations” From my experience really some people clings to what’s not theirs but it is not good as they know because tending to claim someone’s crown will never be good. And we should be contented to what we have now, because God gives us only what we needed. And do not expect more nor ask for more because God knows what He is doing in your life. “Yes, it takes time to get used to such things” It is indeed true, because learning something is isn’t easy and it’s hard for us to get used to it instantly. For example, I want to learn the language if Korea, and it will take a lot of time for me to get used to it because it need time or practice the language. So, that’s it we need to wait for the right time until its ready neither to be given nor to be done. “Don’t be afraid, on the darkest time we’ll take you to paradise” From all the lines in the novel this quotation caught my eyes because this line it’s like Jesus is the one who is talking because it’s always the word of Jesus if we are facing problems, and the dark time represent the problem. And yes, we should not be afraid because God says, “For I am the Lord I will abide you wherever you go”, afraid not and believe in Him because He is the only THE ALE’S BOY FEAST | Jeffrey Overstreet/ Analysis by YKLRosete

one whom we can hold on in times of need because He is great and mighty. Thus, we should always be confident to what we are doing so that everything will follow. And like the saying “Beautiful pictures comes from black room” we can’t reach success nor victory if we didn’t experience problems but God will not give you those if you can’t overcome it so therefore we should be faithful to Him, and that’s all He wants. The theme of these quotations I got from the novel are about accepting the things that you have. You should be contented to what you have because God provides you what you needed. And He did not give trials to you if you can’t overcome it.

Faith isn’t a feeling. It’s a choice to trust God even when the road ahead seems uncertain. Once you choose hope, anything is possible. The reason why so many struggle with faith is that they lack hope. Chapter VI

The Author and his Writing Styles

Authors were the one make book extraordinary, they create; they made us imagine things that really don’t exist. They let us experience something, we cry, we laugh and everything. And we feel those because they have their own unique writing styles. And the novel that I have read was about fantasy and religion. Jeffrey Overstreet was raised in Portland, Oregon, and now he lives with his wife, Anne, a poet and editor in Shoreline Washington. Evenings and weekends, you’ll find them in area coffee shops and walking along Richmond Beach, dreaming up whatever they’re going to write next. Jeffrey and Anne was Christian, they attend bible studies and he is one of the sharers at their church. Jeffrey is a popular speaker on the subject of storytelling, fantasy, and cinema. In July 2010, he will lead a week-long seminar on contemplative cinema at The Glen Workshop, an arts conference hosted by IMAGE. He is an award-winning film critic and columnist, his work appearing in many publications including Image and Paste. His memoir of "dangerous movie THE ALE’S BOY FEAST | Jeffrey Overstreet/ Analysis by YKLRosete

going" is called THROUGH A SCREEN DARKLY. Jeffrey Overstreet never kept diaries as a child — instead, he chronicled everything he read, watched, and listened to in homemade magazines about his life. At the same time, he wrote stacks of adventure stories, and proceeded to critique their weaknesses mercilessly in his “periodicals.” Thus, from the age of eight on into adulthood, he had one foot planted in creativity and the other in criticism.

He was the author of Auralia’s Colors, Cyndere’s Midnight, Raven’s Ladder and his fourth book The Ale’s Boy Feast. And his writing style is all about religion and fantasy. Every chapter of his book makes me more want to read it because the fact that I am a Christian I can get ideas about faith in here so with the fantasy things, he’s so good in expressing his thoughts and the words that he used are so powerful though there are words that are unfamiliar to me but I thank him because those words were added in my vocabulary. He was very artistic in playing the words. He was really good if it’s all about God, because as I observed he inserts a lot of sayings that are caught in the bible.

Chapter VII

Reflection

“There is no such thing as a child who hates to read; there are only children who have not found the right book.” And yes, that quotation is true, because at first when you have said that we need to have our own novel, it’s hard for me to find the book that is suitable for me. I have seven books because my aunt gives me one when she has her vacation. But then, I don’t have the feeling to read it because it’s all about love. That is why I borrowed a book from my friend and it’s about science, but then when I’m at the middle of the book it feels that I am bore THE ALE’S BOY FEAST | Jeffrey Overstreet/ Analysis by YKLRosete

and I feel like I am forced to read because those books are not suitable for me. And a week before we need to register our book I strive hard to find a book and I am indeed lucky because the book I’ve borrowed from my cousin was about faith to God and a bit of fantasy.

And with this activity you gave us, it made me more appreciate the authors because writing a novel isn’t that easy because it takes time to have one. And upon reading this novel it made me realize a lot of things like to have a forgiving heart, being brave in facing you fears because I am so shy and afraid enough in facing problems, but then it gives me courage to face them just like when I am assigned to lead our church in the praise and worship I usually attend the service late because I am avoiding it. But when I read the novel it really gives me courage, that’s why I am confident now even in teaching the kids in our church.

For me, books are a uniquely portable magic. It really takes us to something that really don’t exist and through reading we can develop our confidence and self-esteem.
