Finding the relationship between mass and acceleration This experiment uses a datalogger and light gates
A computer measures the time for a card on a trolley to move through two light gates
T1 is thegate time1 it=takes for the interrupt Velocity 20 / 0.51 = 39.2 cm/s card togate go through first Velocity 2 = 20 /the 0.36 = light 55.6 gate cm/s T2 is the time it takes in velocity / time Acceleration = change for the second gate Acceleration = (55.6 – 39.2) / 0.72 Ready Light gates T3 is20the the to 2 cmtime wide 22.8 cm/s 16.4 / for 0.72 = trolley Acceleration = taken interrupt travel fromcard one gate to the next
Trolley
Constant weight
T1 = 0.51 s T2 = 0.36 s T3 = 0.72 s
An mass is then added to the trolley and the acceleration measured again This is repeated to form a table of mass and acceleration A graph of acceleration against mass can then be plotted
T1 = 0.80 s Acceleration T2 = 0.55 s 2 = 9.4 cm/s T3 = 1.21 s
Plot a graph of acceleration (up) against total mass (along) Write a conclusion explaining what the graph shows mass added kg total mass
