Cancellation of 204 coal blocks by Supreme Court presented a potential grave crisis of:
ENERGY EMPLOYMENT ECONOMY Shutdown of plants dependant on cancelled coal mines
Livelihood of thousands of workers endangered
Economic activity halts, NPAs mount
Crisis averted by focused action through implementation of transparent e-auction process in just four months 14
REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Coal bearing states like Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Telangana to get potential revenue (including auction proceeds and royalties) of
` 3.35 lakh Cr.
From auction of 29 Coal blocks & allotments of 38 coal blocks to states/PSUs over the lifetime of the mines
REJUVENATED ECONOMY
Prevented NPAs, reduced import bill, generated momentum for ‘Make in India’ and raised resources for renewables & Ganga cleaning through coal cess.
Legislation Enabled 15
FUEL
Coal Mines (Special Provision) Act & Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Act enacted to enable growth of coal sector and provide for the welfare of locals particularly tribals in the mineral bearing areas

The PSUs under the three Ministries are committed to active involvement in this effort. As a first step, they are investing over
` 2,250 Cr. for
over 1,25,000 toilets separately for boys and girls by 15th August, 2015 particularly in the needy states such as Bihar, Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan. After construction, the PSUs will also maintain these toilets for a period of five years thus ensuring a complete sanitation programme. Awareness is being created in local communities to improve over all sanitation. 35

Emergency Response
Delhi: After transmission tower collapse in May 2014, central government worked day and night to restore power in 15 days which would have otherwise taken more than six months
Cyclone Hudhud: Central teams assigned to restore power in cyclone hit areas. Damaged streetlights converted to LED within six weeks to restore as well as improve lighting
J&K Floods: Special teams rushed to the state to restore power on war footing
Nepal: Helped Nepal's electricity grid come online after the earthquake and is now working towards rebuilding the distribution network
