Potpourri of Healing Secrets hrough all the years I’ve been in practice, T I’ve picked up some pretty neat healing secrets that will work when many other
treatments don’t. What you’re about to read is a small sampling of many of those secrets. These little-known cures for dozens of health problems will amaze you with their simplicity and their healing ability. Let’s get started:
How to Prevent Loose Teeth Due to Aging If you want to make sure you hold onto your teeth as you get older, there’s an important mineral you should know about. And no, it’s not calcium or magnesium. The mineral I’m talking about is vanadium. You may have heard about taking vanadium for diabetes. But you probably haven’t heard much more about it. That’s because it just doesn’t come up on the radar screen of most doctors. Vanadium is a micromineral, meaning that the body requires it only in very small doses. Your entire body contains about 100 mcg of vanadium. That’s not very much. But just because you don’t need very much, doesn’t mean it’s not important. Vanadium is an essential mineral. Unfortunately, you won’t find it in most multivitamins — and our diets rarely contain enough. So most people have a deficiency. And one of the biggest effects of a vanadium deficiency is loose teeth. You’ll find most vanadium in your bones. It tends to concentrate there, which makes the bones surrounding your teeth stronger. That, in turn, holds the teeth tightly in their sockets. If you don’t have enough vanadium, these bones can’t hold onto the teeth as well. This is why getting enough vanadium is crucial if you want to keep your teeth. The foods highest in vanadium are buckwheat (about 30 mcg per ounce), parsley (about 25 mcg per ounce), oats (about 10 mcg per ounce), and eggs (about 13 mcg per ounce). Unfortunately, most people don’t eat enough of these foods to get the vanadium they need.
Indeed, studies show that the average person gets between 10 and 60 mcg each day, while the optimum amount is more like 25 to 100 mcg. The solution, of course, is to take a vanadium supplement. You can find an easy to take form of vanadium in your health food store. But you must be careful because it can cause toxicity. A 50 mg capsule of vanadium sulfate contains 10 mg of pure vanadium. Since only about 1% of dietary vanadium actually gets absorbed, taking 10 mg will get you 1/10th of a mg — 100 mcg — into your body. This is the total amount of vanadium you should have in your body. So don’t take it too often. About once a week is a great way to ensure that your teeth stay right where they belong, without toxicity.
Spend Lots of Time Outside? You Still Need to Take Vitamin D If you spend lots of time outdoors, you probably don’t need to take vitamin D supplements, right? Wrong. It’s true that your body can produce up to 10,000 units of vitamin D from the sun. But a new study proves that most of us are so deficient in vitamin D, the sun simply can’t provide enough. I’ve seen this in my own clinic. Several years ago, I started testing all of my patients’ vitamin D levels. I found out that not one of them had optimum blood levels of the vitamin. Optimum levels are greater than 60 ng/ml (nanograms per milliliter). Researchers have found that women with levels below 52 ng/ml have twice the risk of getting breast cancer. And they’re also more susceptible to osteoporosis (vitamin D is crucial for healthy bones). In my practice, I found that it was rare to find someone with levels above 40 ng/ml. And 30% of them had levels below the deficiency mark of 30 ng/ml. That means 100% of the people coming into my office were at an increased risk of disease! The astounding part was that most of these people were getting plenty of sunlight exposure. I was perplexed.
Then I found a new study that showed I wasn’t the only one seeing this. The authors of a study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism verified what I was seeing. They found that many individuals have low vitamin D levels despite abundant sun exposure. In this study, Dr. Neil Binkley with the University of Wisconsin Osteoporosis Clinical Research Program, looked at the vitamin D levels of 93 people living in Hawaii. These were people who were in the sun a lot! They had an average of one-and-a-half hours a day of total body skin exposure without sunscreen. Despite a level of sun exposure in a tropical latitude that greatly exceeds what most of us are able to get, half of these people had vitamin D levels in the deficiency range (below 30 ng/ml). The results indicate that we all need more sun – or vitamin D supplements. The old rule that says you can get enough exposure with 15 minutes per day of sunlight to the hands and face just isn’t true. You need a lot more than that! You shouldn’t assume that spending a lot of time outside will give you enough vitamin D. It won’t! I used to tell my patients to have their levels checked. But when 100% of them come back with low levels, I decided the 25-hydroxy vitamin D test was a waste of money for them — I already know they’re deficient. Now I use the test only after a trial of 5,000 IU per day for 30 days. If 5,000 IU is not enough, then I raise the dose to 10,000 IU and check it again after 30 days. I have never found anyone who needed more than 10,000 IU. Start taking vitamin D supplements now. It the only way to increase your levels to the optimal 60 ng/ml level. The starting dose is 5,000 units of vitamin D3. Healthy Resolve sells a 5,000 unit vitamin D3 tablet that’s very easy to take. You can order it by calling 800-728-2288. Quick Cure for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome If you suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome, I’ve got great news for you. There’s
an easy way to treat it that really works wonders. Carpal tunnel syndrome is an inflammation or swelling in the tendons of the wrist. Most people think that it’s caused by repetitive motion. But that’s only what triggers it. It’s usually caused by a vitamin B2 (riboflavin) deficiency, a vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) deficiency, a cervical (neck) subluxation, excessive exposure to fluoride, and, in rare cases, from the use of injectable growth hormone therapy. The conventional treatment is to cease the offending activities, wear a wrist splint, or have a surgical decompression of the wrist tendons. Unfortunately none of these treatments addresses the real cause(s) of the disorder, and are often unsuccessful. I’ve found that employing treatments aimed at the causes is successful in over 90% of cases. And it avoids the potential pitfalls of surgery. The best treatments consist of the following:
• Take a B-complex capsule containing 50 mg of each of the B-vitamins, along with 100 mg of vitamin B6, twice a day. You can expect to do this for three months before the problem resolves itself. • See an acupuncturist to reduce the wrist inflammation. • See a chiropractor to treat any cervical subluxations. • I like to inject a special form of B12 (methyl-B12) along with procaine and ozone just under the skin (sub-q) over the underside of the wrist once a week. This works so well, most pain and irritation is gone in just a few weeks!
The Treatment That Makes You Three Times Less Likely to Die of Heart Disease and Cancer What would you think of a treatment that guarantees that you are three times less likely to die of cancer or heart disease? What would you think if I also told you that the treatment was easy, and some would even say fun? Interested? Now, what if I told you the treatment was free? Do I have your attention? One long-term study followed 2,014 men for 22 years to see whether this treatment
— 3—
could increase life span. Some of the men received the treatment only a few days a week. The unfortunates in the control group did not receive any therapy at all. At the end of the study, 131 of the men had died. Of these, 95 (73.6%) were from the control group, and only 36 (26.4%) were from the therapy group. The treatment? Regular exercise. Yeah, I know you’re disappointed. Exercise can be boring, strenuous, and a real hassle. But here’s good news: To get the benefits I’m talking about, you don’t have to run yourself into the ground. In fact, you’ll get better results if you do mild exercise. The mild exercise I’m going to tell you about decreases death from heart disease, ulcers, depression, cancer, stroke, infections, and diabetes. It also improves your sex life, and helps you sleep better. But the results are even more impressive than that. You’ve been reading in this month’s lead article about preventing cancer by shifting your body to a fat-burning metabolism. Exercise is a critical factor in making this shift. I showed you how glucose is the fuel that drives the cancer engine. The higher your blood glucose is, the more fuel cancer has to grow. Well, exercise is one of the fastest ways to keep a lower blood glucose level. Regular exercise speeds up your metabolism and cuts down the supply of glucose to cancer cells. By shifting to a fat-burning metabolism and exercising every day, your risk of getting cancer is as low as it gets. What is regular exercise? Just take 30 minutes out of every day. During that time, walk at a pace that just slightly increases your breathing rate. And then, every three minutes go really hard and fast for only 30 seconds. After this 30-second period, slow way down until your breathing rate comes down to where it was during the first three minutes. Once it does, stay at that pace for another three minutes. Then go fast again for another 30 seconds. Keep repeating this cycle of three minutes easy and 30 seconds hard until your 30-minute exercise period is over. I like to do this the first thing in the morning. It makes me feel great for the rest of the day, I do it no matter where I am. Even if I’m on vacation. It fits right into my health
budget. And it’s never too late to start getting the benefits. References: Erikksen, G., et al. “Changes in physical fitness and mortality,” The Lancet, 352:759-762, 1998. In-Tele-Health A9 2002 (from Hyperhealth Pro CD-ROM).
How to Save Your Tooth When Your Dentist Says “Root Canal” About three years ago my dentist noticed that one of my older fillings was eroding away, and needed some fixing. He suggested a crown since the filling was so large. Turned out that the tooth was injured in the process (not his fault ... it just was a weakened tooth) leading to a very painful condition called ostitis. The dentist recommended a root canal in order to save the tooth. I declined because of all the evidence that indicates that root canals result in the formation of substances which are carcinogenic. (To learn more about the negative side of root canals, read “Root Canal Coverup” by George Mienig, DDS.) My only other alternative was to pull the tooth, which is what I ended up doing. I wish I knew then what I know now. A year later, I discovered that the tooth might have been saved by injecting the area with

The Common But Unhealthy Food Ingredient That Zaps Your Energy Never, ever use margarine, shortening, hydrogenated, or partially hydrogenated oils!!! These manmade industrial wastes have been shown to be immune suppressive. Recent publications have also demonstrated that these artificial trans fatty acids actually damage the inner walls of the arteries contributing to cardiovascular disease, and also are toxic to the most fundamental aspects of energy production. That means they cause your body to produce less energy. Carefully read ingredients labels, and avoid all foods that contains these poisons. It has been estimated by some researchers that it takes about nine months to completely rid your body of these toxic fats after you have ingested them.
mistletoe extract in combination with ozone. Mistletoe is an old homeopathic remedy that augments the immune system response. When injected into tissues, mistletoe causes the white cells that fight infection to migrate to the area. Ozone is a treatment that I have used for over 15 years to treat all kinds of infectious conditions ranging from herpes to hepatitis and even AIDS. Injected ozone increases the circulation to the area, and also kills bacteria. The beauty of ozone is that it is impossible for any bacteria to become resistant to it. As you may know, bacterial resistance is a huge problem these days. So this property of ozone is becoming more important every year. The injections are virtually painless (really!), and take only a few moments. They need to be repeated every three to seven days, depending on the severity of the condition. I have now treated a great many patients with infected and inflamed teeth for whom their dentist had recommended a root canal. In all but one case, the teeth have been saved, with a complete resolution to the problem. An exciting side effect has proved out to be the elimination of several cases of chronic facial pain, for which the only recourse these patients had was the daily use of pain medications. I even successfully treated a woman from San Jose, who had severe pain stemming from a chronic infection of the entire right side of her facial bones, which had all started from a root canal gone bad. She had previously had multiple surgeries, as well as long-term antibiotic therapy without success. I have also had a couple of cases of chronic TMJ pain respond successfully. Usually from three to six are needed to resolve acute problems. More are needed in chronic infections. I have had several patients in whom, using x-rays, we have been able to actually demonstrate bone regeneration after a fourmonth course of these injections. This fact makes me wonder if many patients with chronic bone infections who ordinarily would require bone grafts, might not be able to avoid that surgery by using these injections. If you ever have a dental problem that looks like it might require either an extraction or a root canal, keep this me in mind. It might save you a lot of trouble.
How to Eat Fish Without Poisoning Yourself You may know that eating fish can be hazardous to your health. Even mainstream publications have caught on to the fact that the world’s fish supply is tainted with mercury. But there’s one thing the media hasn't told you. There’s a very simple way to eat fish without poisoning yourself. The Journal of the American Medical Association recently published an article entitled, “Fish intake, contaminants, and human health.” In the article, the authors noted the many dangers of methyl mercury. Methyl mercury is formed from inorganic mercury, which is common in the environment. When a volcano explodes, it releases mercury into the atmosphere. The same thing happens when electric plants burn coal, or when waste companies incinerate waste. There are numerous industrial processes that release mercury into the air. Rain then brings the inorganic mercury from the atmosphere into lakes and oceans. There it’s converted by bacterial activity into methyl mercury. Methyl mercury is very toxic. Unlike inorganic mercury, your body absorbs it easily in the digestive tract, and then transports it into

The #1 Mistake People Make When Taking Supplements Did you know that many people are wasting their money on supplements? That’s right! Throwing their money right down the drain. It has nothing to do with the quality of the supplements (though that’s important), how many supplements their taking (again, very important), or even how often they take them. No, the reason most people are wasting their money is their diet. You see, vitamin and mineral pills really won’t work unless you’re taking them while eating a good diet. Taking supplements while eating a fast-food, high-glycemic-index, low-fiber diet is a complete waste of time and money. Before you spend another dime on supplements, make sure you’re eating a good diet, rich in vegetables and healthy meats.
tissues. Plants, such as algae, plankton, and other foods that fish feed on also absorb the methyl mercury. So when you eat fish, you're also eating all of the methyl mercury that the fish has eaten. The amount of methyl mercury found in fish depends on how long the fish lives. Older fish have more methyl mercury than their younger cousins because they have more time to accumulate the mercury. It also depends on how predatory the fish is. Highly predatory fish accumulate more methyl mercury because they eat more. Longer-living, larger predators, such as swordfish and shark, have the highest levels of methyl mercury. Smaller or shorter-lived fish, such as shellfish and salmon, have only 1/20th as much. The more fish you eat, especially if you eat the ones with the highest levels, the more methyl mercury your body will amass. The longer you live, the more you will store. Many people over 50 have unhealthy amounts of methyl mercury. So what does all this methyl mercury do? First of all, it crosses the placenta. It also crosses into breast milk. The tolerance for any toxin depends upon the weight and detoxifying ability of the person being exposed. Therefore, children and especially infants and are at a greater risk for toxicity. Researchers have found significant abnormalities in the brain function of children whose mothers ate too much fish during their pregnancy. The authors of this study concluded that even low exposure to methyl mercury can decrease a child’s brain function. But children aren’t the only people that need to be concerned about methyl mercury. Several studies have also indicated that it’s toxic to the heart, and can cause heart attacks in adults. And this is where it really gets interesting. In addition to mercury, fish also contain two wonderful fats. One is eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and the other docosapentaenoic acid (DHA). These fats are so effective at improving both neurological and cardiovascular function, that the damage done by the methyl mercury is somewhat offset by the benefit of the fats. So much so, that the authors of this study concluded that “the benefits of fish intake exceed
the potential risks.” But let me take this one step further. Why eat any methyl mercury at all? It can’t be good for you. Why not just have your fish and eat it too? This is what I advise my patients to do — unless they’re pregnant. I tell my pregnant patients to avoid fish completely. The risks just aren’t worth it. You can get enough mercury-free EPA and DHA in gelcaps, such as those sold with Healthy Resolve (800-728-2288). But I tell all of my other patients to eat all the fish they want. But when they do, I tell them to take DMSA at the same time. DMSA (dimercaptosuccinic acid) is a naturally occurring substance that chelates mercury. This means that it binds to mercury, and does not allow it to be absorbed in the intestinal tract. It also binds any mercury that's already in the body and takes it out in the urine. DMSA is extremely effective both at stopping mercury absorption, and removing mercury from the body. And it's entirely safe when you take it in recommended doses. An adult can very safely take up to 1,500 mg per week. Whenever I eat fish, I haul out my little supplement case and take three 100 mg capsules of DMSA before the meal. And then I can forget about mercury and enjoy my meal. DMSA capsules are available at most health foods stores. References Mozaffarian D, Rimm EB. Fish intake, contaminants, and human health. Why You Need More of This Nutrition-less Substance Do you know what has absolutely no nutritional value, doesn’t provide your body with any energy, is a powerful solvent, and can kill you, but it’s still essential for life? The answer is water. You can’t live without it. The reason is that water is the solvent in which every molecular reaction takes place. Additionally, it’s the solvent that the body uses to rid itself of toxins. Some of these toxins come from outside the body (including chemicals, pollution, cigarettes, etc.). But the majority of the toxins are those formed in the body as the waste products of
— 6—
normal metabolic function. In the absence of a sufficient daily intake of high quality water, these toxins accumulate and cause disease. This is why it's so important to drink plenty of water during the day. In light of this fact, it’s amazing how few people actually drink an optimal amount of water. Chronic dehydration is very common. In the past, I’ve used bio-impedance measurements to assess hydration status, and I would say that about half the people we tested turned out to be dehydrated. So it's much more common than you might think. And don't count on thirst to let you know if you're chronically dehydrated. Although thirst is an excellent indicator of acute dehydration, in chronic states the body accommodates by retaining water, and thirst doesn't occur. Unfortunately, when the body retains water, it also retains the toxins that the water was supposed to eliminate, increasing toxin deposition in the connective tissues, and setting the stage for chronic disease and premature aging. The other factor regarding water is its purity. Water is easily contaminated by chlorine, fluoride, pesticide residuals, heavy metals, or hard minerals. When this happens, it significantly reduces its solvent capabilities. I’ve been testing water for many years and the fact is that it's quite unusual to find any well water or city water that is pure enough for an optimal detoxifying effect. For this reason, and for the additional reason that every now and then there is a biological contamination of the water supply, I recommend that every household either purchase purified water, or have their own home purification unit. The key word here is “purified.” Water labeled as spring water, mineral water, or drinking water is just not pure enough. Ideally, water should be purified using either a reverse osmosis method or a distillation method. My favorite method is reverse osmosis, because distillation units are more complex and expensive, and don't remove as many materials. Every adult should drink at least one-anda-half quarts per day of purified water. On hot days or when exercising, twice that amount may be needed. Once your body is used to this amount of water, you will begin to feel thirsty if you aren’t getting enough. But until then,
don’t rely on thirst to remind you to drink water. Remember that since the lymphatics have been dumping toxins into your bloodstream all night long, it’s an especially good habit to help the kidneys along by drinking 16-32 oz. when you first get up in the morning. This may take some getting used to, but it’s worth it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. I’m 79 years old and I'm still having
hot flashes. I had a hysterectomy in 1972 and went to Premarin until four months ago. While taking Premarin, I continued to have hot flashes. Finally, I decided to just stop the drug. Of course, the hot flashes continue. How can I get my hormones in balance? Or is it too late for me? — Shirley V., via e-mail Dear Shirley, According to the thinking of most conventional doctors, it is too late for you. But that's not how I think. Replacing your sagging hormone levels with just the right amount of bio-identical hormones will help you avoid osteoporosis, heart disease, strokes, and dementia. It also will make you feel and sleep better, and give you more youthful levels of energy. The key is to take bio-identical hormones, not Premarin and the like. If you can find a local doctor to take care of your needs, that's great. But make sure he/she is well versed in bio-identical hormones. A good source of doctors like this can be found at www.worldhealth.net or call 800-558-1267. Also, I can test your hormone levels as well as prescribe bio-identical hormones for you over the phone for a simple consultation fee. You can reach my clinic at 775-884-3990 for more information and to set up an appointment.
Q. Do you have any suggestions for
resolving migraine headaches? — Jerry K., via e-mail Dear Jerry, Migraines are caused by a lot of different things. I would need to know much more about you to answer specifically. Here are some things I would need to know: How often do
— 7—
they happen? Are they associated with any particular foods or with eating in general? Do you get them when you're stressed? Have you seen a chiropractor? Are you sleeping well? What treatments have you tried so far? How long have you had the headaches? The most common cause of migraines is food allergies. If I had but one thing to suggest without knowing anything at all about the condition, I would say go on a specific food elimination and rotation for four to six weeks and see if the headaches don't go away. There's a 50/50 chance that this simple approach will work. And it's likely your best bet. If you're successful, then very slowly introduce the eliminated foods back in one at a time until you find out what foods are a factor. Other causes are magnesium deficiency and low thyroid function. The latter is especially tricky because the thyroid lab tests often come back as "normal."
Q. Is there a cure for herpes? Kevin
Trudeau claims there is in his infomercials. I realize he's not a doctor or molecular biologist, but such a claim caught my attention. Herpes plagues my face, lips, and mucous membranes. It's a curse. I would love to have it eradicated from my body forever. Can you help? — Sylvia C., via e-mail Dear Sylvia, It is possible to cure the symptoms that a virus causes. But it's not possible to cure the virus itself. Viruses encode themselves onto our own genetic material. Then they use our genes to reproduce because they can’t reproduce by themselves. So they literally become a part of our genetic structure, making it impossible to completely eliminate them from your body. I haven’t read Mr. Trudeau’s book. But I hope he doesn’t mean to suggest that the virus can actually be eliminated from the body. That’s just not possible. What he probably means is that it can be controlled to the point that it will no longer cause breakouts. After all, this is the case with every other virus you have ever been infected with. If you were infected with the chicken pox virus when you were young, you still have the
virus in your body. But, fortunately, you're not walking around with a case of chicken pox. The virus is there, but it's not causing any problems because your body has it under control. This is what you can expect with the herpes virus. You can control it to the point that you never have any outbreaks. But it's always there just the same. There are two primary ways to control the herpes virus. One is to take the amino acid llysine. Nobody knows quite how it works, although it appears to work by affecting the way the immune system fights the virus. I recommend 3,000 mg of l-lysine three times a day for acute infections. Take 3,000 mg once a day to prevent them from occurring. L-lysine is completely safe. In fact, because of its many health and anti-aging properties, it's not a bad idea for everyone to take it whether they have herpes or not. Problem is, not all cases of herpes respond to l-lysine. When it works it’s great. But that's only about 40% of the time. For cases that don’t respond, I use the best natural treatment for any viral infection I have seen in over 35 years of medicine. It involves treating the blood with a combination of ozone and ultraviolet light. We do this in the clinic all the time. It’s as close to a sure thing for herpes as there is. The only negative is that it requires a number of treatments spread out over time. You’ll need to find a doctor in your area that can do these treatments. You can find a list of doctors that do these treatments on the website www.oxygenhealingtherapies.com.
Q. I’ve got Lyme disease. My doctor has
me on antibiotics, which are wreaking havoc on my body. I'd like to get off of them as soon as possible. What’s the best way to treat Lyme? — Marty H., Washington, DC Dear Marty, Antibiotic therapies are useful for Lyme disease, but only when the case is acute (i.e., less than eight weeks old). In that case, a twoto four-week course of antibiotics will often kill the organism and eliminate the disease. But antibiotics are useless to treat an
— 8—
older case. This is called a chronic case of Lyme disease. It sounds like the Lyme disease you have is chronic. If that’s the case, stop the antibiotics and start something else. I have never seen antibiotic therapy work for chronic Lyme disease. As to what you need to switch to, that depends on a lot of factors. The treatment of chronic Lyme disease is very individual. And it doesn’t focus on killing the bacteria that caused the Lyme disease in the first place. Instead, it focuses on optimizing your immune system. Such a program is often very comprehensive. It requires you and your doctor to look at detoxification, hormonal balance, your nutritional condition, your metabolic status, and how your body deals with stress. If you can't find a doctor in your area willing to work through all of this with you, call the clinic (775-884-3990) and set up a phone consultation. We can discuss your case over the phone and give you some concrete ideas of what will be needed to get you back on track.
Q. My brother has intermittent claudication. He can walk no more than three blocks. Are there any tips you could give on how to help yourself if you have this condition? Or if chelation therapy would help? — John B., Mt. Washington, KY
Dear John, Intermittent claudication is serious leg cramps that are a result of decreased oxygen. The cramps usually come during exercise. Yes, chelation is vital. His doctor should give him two treatments each week. It will probably take 30-40 treatments to clear him up. You can find a chelation doctor at www.acam.org. Even better yet, have him see a doctor that uses both chelation therapy and ozone therapy. The two of these therapies used together are remarkable for any circulation condition. Go to www.oxygenhealingtherapies.com to find ozone doctors. Now here's the best part, and the part that he will most likely not want to hear. One of the best treatments for claudication, and clearly the least expensive, is fasting. While he's fasting, he needs to make a pot of my magic broth and drink it through the
day. Here's how to make it. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add chicken, rice, cabbage, cilantro, garlic, onions, cayenne pepper, turmeric, and fresh ginger. Add salt and pepper and any other spices as desired. Boil it until the chicken is fully cooked. Strain out all of the solid material, and drink only the broth. Drink a glass of this broth every hour and nothing else but water. This fast may need to go on for one to two weeks (sometimes longer). I have successfully treated many people who could not even walk a hundred feet with this treatment. It can work miracles.
Q. Does adding Splenda or any other
artificial sweeteners, besides sugar, to your diet contribute to Pancreatic cancer? — Vicky C., via e-mail Dear Vicky, When taken in normal amounts, artificial sweeteners are completely safe. All of them, including aspartame, have been given to animals in doses that exceed the doses that would normally be used by people, and none of them have ever been shown to have any detrimental effects that can be extrapolated to humans. Early studies on saccharin showed an increase in bladder cancer in rats with very high doses. Other studies have suggested an increase in leukemia and lymphoma in mice and rats from aspartame. Happily enough, however, when the results of the studies were applied to human cancer development, the researchers discovered that this was a problem for rats and mice only. In one study of half a million people, many of whom drank excessive amounts of soda sweetened with aspartame, there was no more cancer in them than in those who avoided the sweeteners. Common sense says to avoid all artificial substances as much as possible, so I'm not a big fan of them. We can't tell for sure what other problems they might be causing. But so far, there is no evidence that artificial sweeteners cause cancer. The only sugar substitutes I recommend is Stevia or xylitol, which you can find at any health food store and on the Internet. This is especially true if you’re diabetic or pre-diabetic. Other sweeteners can increase your blood sugar. But these two sweeteners will not negatively affect your body's metabolism.

They Shaved This Woman’s Head and Saved Her Life A 50-year-old woman was rushed to the hospital. She was severely weak and began having trouble breathing. By the time she got to the hospital she had pinpoint pupils and was sweating profusely. Within an hour she stopped breathing, and went into a coma. The doctors placed a breathing tube in her windpipe, and attached her to a respirator. But what was wrong with her? The doctors didn’t have a clue. Then an alert nurse noticed that the woman had a peculiar smell coming from her hair. The odor resembled garlic, and to the nurse it smelled like insecticide. The doctors diagnosed her with organophosphate pesticide poisoning. They immediately treated her with two drugs, atropine and 2-PAM, to reverse the effects of the poison. Each time she received the medications she awoke and improved. But then immediately stopped breathing and went back into a coma again. The nurses washed her skin and shampooed her hair several times, but this had no lasting effect. Finally, since the primary contamination seemed to be in her hair, the nurses shaved her head. It was only then that she steadily improved. She regained consciousness, and was able to breathe on her own. Eventually, the doctors weaned her off her medicines. When the initial blood tests returned,
they verified that the nurse was correct. The woman was poisoned with an organophosphate insecticide. But how? How did her hair have enough insecticide to almost kill her? The answer came from the patient when she was finally able to talk. She remembered that just before she became ill, her neighbor shampooed her hair. The hospital contacted the neighbor and asked her to bring in the shampoo she used. Chagrined, she showed up with two containers. One held shampoo. The other, a similar bottle, contained an organophosphate insecticide. Both receptacles were the same size. The labels were old and blurred. “I must have used the wrong one,” she said when she learned that her friend almost died from insecticide poisoning. Her friend was very lucky this high-dose of poison didn’t kill her. We know that even low levels of these pesticides can cause Parkinson’s disease, birth defects, male infertility, and even multiple sclerosis in susceptible persons. The problem is that we don’t have a way of determining who is susceptible and who isn’t. So the most common sense attitude to take is to just avoid them. In addition, make sure that your children and grandchildren do not run barefoot on lawns that have these pesticides sprayed on them. The same goes for your dogs.
