Population Growth and Urbanisation Nearly three times as many people will be living in urban areas in 2015 than there were in 1955. How can the demands of such a rapidly increasing urban population be met? To answer this, first of all consider what the problems of rapid urbanisation will be and what demands will be created. a). Over crowding. b). Lack of housing. c). Lack of jobs. d). Infrastructure will not be able to cope e.g.: transport systems, sanitation, services such as clean water, electricity, refuse collection, education and medical facilities. e). In LEDC’s it often means and much younger population (because it tends to be the younger people who migrate to the cities) and therefore there will be a high birth rate and an increasingly rapid population increase. f). In LEDC’s there will be the growth of “spontaneous settlements” (Shanty towns). You also need to think about the causes of rapid urbanisation a). Rural-Urban migration b). In LEDC’s the infrastructure of cities is growing so much faster than rural areas. This is bound to attract industrial investment and therefore people who are looking for work c). Population increases because better access to health care means death rate is lower. Now bring these two together to suggest how you could meet the demands. How can you predict future population figures and why would this be helpful? How could you meet the demands for housing, jobs, infra-structure, and spontaneous settlements? Could you also help to meet the demands by looking to the cause and meeting the needs there? Now answer the question: Nearly three times as many people will be living in urban areas in 2015 than there were in 1955. How can the demands of such a rapidly increasing urban population be met? ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
