Pools | Residential | Contractors Summary Residential pool requirements apply to a) pool controls installed to optimize energy use during their operation and b) cover insulation for heated pools. Specifically, pool heaters must have a readily accessible on-off switch. Additionally, natural gas pool heating systems cannot be equipped with a standing pilot, but rather must have an efficient intermittent ignition device. Together, a pool heater on-off switch and timer eliminate the need for adjusting thermostat settings when not in use. They also allow occupants to anticipate when daily ambient temperature will be sufficient to compensate for nighttime heat loss, enabling the system to be turned off when going on vacation or any extended leave.
QUICK FACTS Pools - Section 403.9 2009 IECC Heater needs to be easily accessible Further specifications in Section 101.4.3 “Additions and Alterations” Mandatory for all climate zones Detailed information can be found at:

The 2009 IECC covers pools in Section 403.9.
Swimming pool energy efficiency measures
Previous Code The 2009 IECC has both pool control and cover requirements, unlike the previous edition in 2006, which has neither. The 2003 iteration has pool cover requirements, but does not specify a minimum temperature, essentially making pool covers mandatory for any heated pool.
Exemptions Requirements covered in the 2009 IECC Section 403.9 are mandatory and universal for all climate zones.
Requirements Contractors and sub-contractors must be aware of the requirements covered in the 2009 IECC and need to ensure that:

Pools have a) the required controls for their heating equipment and b) insulated covers Pool heaters and their controls are accessible
Typical Problems Standard issues/concerns that arise include: Heater not easily accessible Incorrect insulation value on pool cover
