Two Days National Conference on Health Economics in India: Issues, Strategies and Challenges The role of health in the welfare of individuals and communities and in the economic development of countries is so important that achievement of sound health has been accepted as a universal goal of all nations (after the Alma-Ata Declaration) and a fundamental right of every human being by FAO. From 1990, health status of a nation has been reckoned as a component of human development index, which is now popularly, used by development economists as a better and more meaningful indicator of development. In the wake of these developments, health economics has emerged as an important and one of the most rapidly growing branches of economics in all major countries including, India. The importance of this branch to India is most likely to increase in future with the growing population, changes in the demographic structure, environmental degradation, climate changes, life- style changes, commercialization of medical profession, privatization of medical care, morbidity transition, emergence of new diseases and re-emergence of banished diseases, increasing alcoholism, drug addiction, mental disorders and suicides. These issues call for a serious review of the strategies followed in the medical sector by the country so far and the need for evolving appropriate policies to tackle future problems. With a view to evaluating the health polices of the central and state governments, identifying the weaknesses in the current system, and formulating future polices, the Economics Department of Pondicherry University has decided to organize a two day conference on the theme “Health Economics in India : Issues, Strategies and Challenges”.
