 

You have elegantly presented a series of at least six or more images that document a subject/topic in a way that effectively tells a story, raises awareness, elicits an emotional response, or explores its visual appearance in an interesting or unique way. You have selected high quality, clean, clear, focused negatives/digital exposures to create your prints. You have submitted a typed statement of purpose (150 words or less) that explains your goals and objectives for creating this series. The statement includes your name, the title of the photo essay, and the date.

_____/_____ (20 points) STUDIO SKILLS: Darkroom & Photoshop      

Each print has a wide range of value, from the blackest black to the whitest white. Each print has a wide range of middle-gray values. Each print demonstrates a thorough understanding of the four-step printing method, (correctly developing, stopping, fixing, and washing each print). You have used the appropriate aperture and exposure settings to make each print. Your prints demonstrate proper use of the enlarger, grain focuser, easel, and other darkroom tools. You have applied additional exposure techniques, (dodging/burning and/or use of a filter) when necessary.

For digital images:  You have scanned/photographed your pictures at an appropriate resolution.  You have correctly adjusted levels and contrast for each print.  You have used Photoshop tools to clear away any unwanted dust, dirt, or scratches.  You have effectively color balanced each image.  You have used all other Photoshop tools carefully and effectively, so that your images do not appear to be manipulated. Each print demonstrates use of a principle of composition to emphasize and/or clarify the subject matter. Your presentation format of your photographs helps to reinforce the expressive meaning of your photo essay theme. You have used a consistent compositional approach in your photographs as a way of unifying the images together in your essay.

You have considered the order of your pictures in your presentation sequence. The order helps to emphasize the story or emotional impact of your essay. You have elegantly designed and consistently used the frame of each powerpoint slide to unify your presentation. Text has been elegantly integrated into your presentation using an appropriate size and does not detract from the images. You have somehow included your statement of purpose in the presentation. You have formatted your images in the powerpoint to 72 dpi, so as not to slow down the presentation.

You have considered the arrangement and size of each of your photos in the final presentation. The design and arrangement of your photo essay images helps reinforce the meaning/purpose of you intended to discover about your topic. You have elegantly designed and consistently used the frame of each powerpoint slide to unify your presentation. If text or other materials are used, they have been elegantly integrated into your presentation without detracting from the images. You have somehow included your statement of purpose when presenting your work. You have formatted your images in the powerpoint to 72 dpi, so as not to slow down the presentation.
