DIRECTIONS TO GASKILL STREET You may have noticed that concrete footings have been layed at the entrances of our main street. These are the preparations for the erection of historic town signs directing traffic into Gaskill Street. Above is a rough impression of what the final result should look like, the actual colour after curing should be similar to sandstone. All material and labour is being sourced locally as much as possible.

A BALL WAS HAD BY ALL The first 20 minutes of the Canowindra Preschool 50 year Anniversary Ball started with just over $200 being raised just so the TV could be turned on! The Bledisloe Cup was on that night, so if the boys wanted to watch the rugby, they had to pay. Paul Breen the MC, assured the rugby fans that if $200 was raised in 5 minutes then the big screen TV which had been moved into the bar area, would be switched on just before kick off. It was a great start to the evening. With close to 140 people dressed up in pretty frocks and smart suits. With flowers (thankyou to Anne Ward for supplying and arranging the flowers, from her own garden) and candles on the tables and the bright lights from the stage with Cecilia Rochelli & Band (from Orange) singing some great tunes, the Nangar Room looked transformed.

locally first!

The overall size of signs will be approx 2.4m long, 1m high, 0.6m deep with a mild steel plasma cut sign, offset from the block and allowed to rust naturally. This design was chosen to assist in the historic rural nature of the town without being too ‘Ye Olde’ pretentious. These signs are the result of the Bendy Street Group’s efforts, and based on the amount of requests they received for indicative directional signage steering people into the town centre. Signs will be erected at five key locations: the kerb out front of the pool, Shep’s corner, Ken’s corner, Age of Fishes Museum and the Services Club corner. The auction started very well, with some fantastic items up for grabs, including a night at a luxurious hotel in Sydney, with movie tickets, and a Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb. The sports memorabilia was also very successful, but the auction item which raised the most money and has been the most talked about was definitely the ‘Backyard Blitz’! Five of our great Preschool dads have donated their time and muscles to ‘blitz’ some lucky persons backyard. Three of these fine men were present at the Ball and without too much encouragement, they showed some of the muscles that were going to be used at the ‘blitz’. Yes, that’s right, Paul Breen, Anthony Durkin and Tom Ward took off their shirts to raise money for the Preschool. Luckily, Holly Durkin thought quickly and ran out with an apron to put on (contd over…)

her husband and Tom Ward just gave us a glimpse of his muscles, but Paul Breen was not shy as the bidding got higher and higher. Overall the auction raised $3,000 which was an amazing effort. Thankyou to everyone who bid on the auction items, we hope the winners all enjoy what was up for offer. The Preschool would like to thank the following for donating so many fantastic items: Peter Stacey, Dendy Films, Sydney BridgeClimb, Elite Sports Management, Glenn & Sue Eisenhauer, Windowrie Estate, Goree Park, Herb & Jenny Gardner, Rosnay wines, The Backyard Blitz Boys, Questacon & Margaret of Wallington Wines. Thankyou also to all those people who could not attend the Ball but donated money to the Preschool. We also received a very generous donation from a local family. Overall the proceeds from the Ball came to just over $5,000. This money is going to be used to purchase and install some brand new playground equipment for the Preschool, which will look fantastic and be great for the children to play and climb on. The food was absolutely delicious. Thankyou to Jo Robson and her great team of helpers for producing such a yummy meal with great service. The Club has just put in a brand new commercial kitchen and Jo was the first to use it. Thanks also to The Services Club and Grant Cummings for helping set up and making the night run so smoothly. A huge thankyou to the Preschool mums (& dads) who helped organise the Ball: Michelle Stacey, Nikki Breen, Holly Durkin, Katie Kelly, Liz Mitchell & Sarah Cartwright, and of course Paul Breen for being the MC. These functions would not be possible if it wasn’t for the time & effort the mums and families put into organising & running these events. Thankyou also to Lana Brown (Preschool Director) for doing such a wonderful job in making the Preschool such a fantastic place for our children to play, grow and learn. Lana made a lovely speech on the Ball night and thanked Ros McNeice for her many years of service to the Canowindra Preschool, she is now the longest serving staff member at the Preschool. Lastly, a big thankyou to the Canowindra Community, who not only attended the 50th Anniversary Ball but to all the families who have supported the Canowindra Preschool over the past 50 years. Hope to see all of you for the 60th Annivesary! Georgie Ward: President, Canowindra Preschool Kindergarten

FRIVOLITY @ TASTE THIS WEEKEND

The Merri-May Gill comedy cabaret show features hilarious original songs, with an overall theme of making ‘life in the bush’ sexy. Her onset desire to be French (‘Fook I Wish I Was French’). Merri-May now has a new sidekick ‘Janice’, (Fiona Claus) a Librarian’s Assistant from the Moree Municipal Library who is on work experience with MerriMay Gill to see how the music industry works (she wants to join the Moree Arts Council). Janice has a big box (with ‘Janice’s Box’ in large font stuck on the front), here she keeps Merri-May’s props, as well as singing backup and playing various unusual rhythm instruments on some songs. Oh – and how can we forget the most important part (according to Merri-May Gill): Merri-May has emerged after recently laying low and metamorphosing Madonna-style, with a new look: black and white dresses, with a modern (but still classic) French Chic style. Merri-May Gill has had sell-out seasons at the Edinburgh Fringe, and toured numerous times through the UK, NZ, USA, Canada and Czech Republic, and played very extensively through rural, regional and urban Australia since 1998. She has shared the bill with Michelle Shocked, Joan Armatrading and Janis Ian. Merri-May has previously visited taste under the assumed name of Nester Lou in the company of Slim Nackers, in "The Slim Nackers & Nester Lou Show". Book now on 02 6344 2332 for a FUN night!

It was a case of double the joy for Tigers coach Damian Kennedy this week. The Tigers ran out comprehensive winners against the Molong Bulls in the elimination semi-final on Sunday, and earlier, on the Friday night Damian was named Coach of the Year in the Woodbridge Cup Competition. The prestigious award is voted on by the other coaches in the competition. The award shows that Damian is extremely well respected for the improvements he has made to the Tigers in 2009. It was almost a triple treat with Damian narrowly missing out being named the Woodbridge Cup Player of the Year, which was won by Molong’s Trent Morgan.

The Earsmans Mixed Concrete Under 12s played with purpose from the opening whistle and the extra commitment showed as they ran out winners 16-6. Zak Whitehead scored three tries, through a kick, a long cut out pass and a 70 metre run. The other score came from Gene Tarrant who barged over the line for a good try. The wind played havoc with the conversions so there weren’t any but the 12s should be proud of their effort and they now meet Red Bend in the final at West Wyalong on Saturday. The Canowindra Produce Under 14s smashed Condobolin 30-6 which handed Condobolin their first defeat of the season. The first half was a bit scrappy as dropped ball and incomplete plays stunted the Tigers attack. Although their strong defense only let one try in and at the end of the first half the Tigers were starting to attack. In the second half Jayden Brown scored two tries, Josh Trayhurn, Isaac Beath, Bradyn Cassidy and Alex Willson scored one each. Tim Middleton landed three conversions as his team mates scored their tries wide out and not under the posts. The 14s now go straight into the grand final Damian Kennedy receives the Woodbridge Cup at Parkes in two weeks time where they will Coach of the Year award from vice president Peter Seale play either Red Bend or Condobolin.

SPORT LIKE A TIGER On Sunday the Tigers had a full complement of players for the elimination game against Molong Bulls, despite this the Tigers had a terrible start conceding 14 points early. The Tigers settled into the game and found a weak point in Molong’s defense, for Butler and Daly to score tries. A great sideline conversion from Woolley closed the gap to 14-10. Great bursts by Jones and Freiymayer saw Burn scored near the posts to level the scores, a missed conversion attempt kept the scores locked at 14-14. Just on half time the competitions leading try scorer Bulls Trent Morgan ran in a 40m solo try 1814. The early stages of the second half were a real match after Gaeta put on a bone cruncher from the kickoff, with the Canowindra pack coming out on top. Archer set up a number of tries with some hard running, Freimayer managed to offload every time he touched the ball and the rest of the forwards followed suit. Burn crossed for 3 tries, the Kennedy brothers combined for Pat to score a 4 pointer and the captain coach got a try in for him self. In all, the Tigers scored 8-3, keeping the Bulls scoreless in the second half. Woolley kicked one conversion while Burn kicked 4 goals. Last weeks man of the moment Shaun Craven had a safe and solid game at the back; Maere and Butler were unlucky not to snare more 4 pointers out wide. A big thank you to Nigel Knight and Brodie Friend for backing up again, they are now a big part of this side. The win against the Molong Bulls and Peak Hill Roosters defeating Manildra, now sees the Tigers take on Manildra at Peak Hill next Sunday. The Tigers have had two close games against the Rhinos already this season and the word coming out of Manildra is they will have everyone on deck come Sunday. They are the minor premiers and should be shown that respect. Should be a great match! For the Tigers Cummings will make a return to the squad after missing Sunday’s game with the flu, but they may lose Freimayer to work commitments. If Canowindra’s pack continues to stand up, and give the backline every chance to run with the ball then the Tigers may well defeat the minor premiers again and advance another week. A very big thank you to all the vocal supporters who made it to Manildra on Sunday. The Tigers have had great crowds this season and it’s great to see it continue through the final series, so come to the game and have fun!
