THE CANOWINDRA HOSPITAL AUXILIARY REACH THEIR GOAL!

At their recently held AGM the Auxiliary announced that they have received donations from the “Age of Fishes” Museum for $500, Canowindra Lions Club for $500 and Newcrest Mining’s Cadia Valley Operations for $5,500. These generous donations along with the money raised from the “Spirit of ANZAC” Art Exhibition will now allow for the equipment in the form of a Cobas Cardiac Monitoring Machine and an INR Machine to be purchased for the Soldier’s Memorial Hospital, they are hoping to order these machines following their August Meeting. The Auxiliary have also purchased and will be installing a new Public Phone at the Hospital, due to the decommissioning of the Gold Phone by Telstra. The new phone is valued at over $1,400 and the Auxiliary believes that it is vital to have a public phone at the Hospital for the convenience of the patients and general public. The AGM also witness a change of guard, with Mrs Peggy Beath being elected President of the Auxiliary, the President and Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank outgoing President Mrs Isabel Russell, who stood down due to ill health, for her leadership over the past two years.

Cabonne Council is inviting operators from around the shire to exhibit at the Made in Cabonne pavilion at the Australian National Field Days in Borenore 20-22 October 2009. This will be the third year that Cabonne Council will participate at the Field Days with the Made in Cabonne theme, which showcases products that include: wine, olives, plants, wood work, quilts and gelato, and it gives people the opportunity to sample and buy locally produced goods. Mayor Kevin Duffy said, “The Made in Cabonne exhibition builds recognition for exceptional products, their producers, and Cabonne’s industries in general. Council is proud of the businesses in Cabonne and these products bring a sampling of Cabonne’s rich resources and diversity”. He went on to say “I encourage businesses in Cabonne to join us at the Australian National Field Days and promote not only your business but Cabonne Country as a unique region”. It is hoped that the Australian National Field Days will provide extensive recognition to the large variety of products that are developed within the Cabonne region. Exhibition sites will be made available at a maximum cost of $15, with individual exhibitors being responsible for their site for the duration of the Field Days. Limited space is available and businesses interested in exhibiting their products at the Australian National Field Days should contact Megan Barrett on 02 6392 3200 to request an Expression of Interest Form.

CWA EVENING BRANCH RESPONSE

The response to establishing an evening branch of the Canowindra CWA has been exceptional! The proposal in last week’s issue of The Phoenix proved extremely positive ,and it looks certain that an evening branch will be formed. As a complement to the existing day branch of the CWA, the evening branch will offer women access to the support and benefits of joining the CWA, at a time more convenient to their lifestyle. A dinner will be held at the Canowindra Services Club, Thursday 27 August at 6:30pm. Please call Patricia Pearce on 02 6364 0277, or Penny Nash on 02 6364 0218 to express your interest in attending the dinner or future meetings.

Congratulations to Jan Platt who won the River Bank Gallery Smalls Exhibition 2009 People’s Choice award this year, with her painting ‘Misty Morning’. Smalls proved its huge popularity within the community once again, with many quality works being entered. The Canowindra Preschool were also winners, with the Gallery donating $750 to date, from the proceeds of the sale of programmes and voting forms for the Small People’s Smalls. Katie Kelly, Fundraising Co-ordinator for the Preschool, praised Catherine O’Brien and David Isbester of the River Bank Gallery for their generosity and support of such a worthwhile fundraising event. Thank you so much! Winner of the Small People’s Smalls People’s Choice was Luca Mirto, with a wonderful self portrait. Well done Luca!

ALEXANDER’S TECHNIQUE Last Tuesday Alexander Hayes presented an informative and inspirational workshop on how to design and manage a web presence for businesses or interest groups. Over 20 people met at Tom’s Waterhole, where they discovered how easy it is to bring businesses into the multimedia age. Alexander, an educator and professional web developer, demonstrated how simple and cost effective it is to incorporate various media and communication tools, including Twitter, Flickr and Skype, into a robust and dynamic virtual business tool. Using Tom’s Waterhole and Balloon Joy Flight’s new and improved website, Alexander also proved how different business entities can be combined into one user friendly and attractive user experience. You can visit Graham and Jan Kerr’s website to see for yourself: www.gjkerr.com.au

LAWSON PARK HOO DOO CONTINUES Canowindra Tigers’ horrific record at Lawson Park at Grenfell continued on Sunday. The Tigers have won only one game at Lawson Park in the last eight years. The previous three seasons the Tigers have let the Goannas score a minimum of 50 points in each encounter. Again the Tigers were down due to work commitments, but were backed up by young Nigel Knight, Brodie Friend and Karl Maere. Sunday’s encounter appeared to be a tighter contest, as early on the Grenfell side had all the position yet the tigers repelled them for the first quarter of the match. Grenfell eventually scored back to back tries before the Tigers got on the board through Rob Burn. It was a lack lustre game that didn’t really reach any great heights as Grenfell would score, Canowindra would close the gap, and then Grenfell would score to edge ahead again. It wasn’t until the final 15 minutes when the Tigers got some venom in their defense after Shaun Craven was sin binned, but the fire came too late. Rob Burn was by far the Tigers best and scored three tries, Phil Butler score twice with Aaron Woolley kicking four goals.

JUNIOR LEAGUE CHAMPIONS The Chris Williams Under 8s finished their great season off with a win, 38 -10. Try scorers were Josh Middleton, Codie Reid and Jacob Fisher with two each, while Andrew Cutmore and Max Coady scored one each. Conversions came from Josh Middleton, Max Coady and Jacob Fisher. The Canowindra Services Club Under 10s weren’t on the winners list but they continued to try hard as Jordan Kemper and Joe Coady tackled and ran at will. The 10s lone try scorer was Harley Smith late in the game. Thanks to the 8s players who played up for the 10s last game. The Earsmans Mixed concrete Under 12s scored three tries in the first half through Callum Clyburn, Zak Whitehead and Jake Wythes. Conversions were kicked by Jumara Cutmore, Nathan Whatman and Callum Clyburn. Grenfell fought back in the second half as they scored three tries and converted two for the full time score of 18-16. The Canowindra Produce Under 14s had an easy win 46-10, with Jayden Brown scoring three tries, Alex Willson and Isaac Beath with two tries, while Ebanne Malae scored one. Conversions were shared around as Tim Middleton kicked two, Ebanne Malae, Jared Zahra, Curtis Hughes, Jayden Brown, and Rohan Toole kicked one each. Alex Willson scored a third try, for Grenfell , in the second half - not sure if it counts to his season total. The Kens Service Centre Under 16s finished the season on a high note as they trounced the Goannas 46-14. Harry Myers led the way with two tries while Elijah Beath, Gerard Eppulstun, Dan Middleton, Luke Watt, Sam Wallace, Danny Daley and Nick Willson scored one each. Dan Middleton kicked two conversions while Luke Watt landed three, including two superb kicks from the sideline. This week the 12s and 14s play in the qualifying semi at Trundle on Sunday with the 12s starting at about 12 noon.
