The first day of a 10 week Rural Fire Service Cadetship course was held on Wednesday 5 August at the high school. Organised by David Cullane, and presented by the Canobolas RFS Zone, youth of our region are being kitted out with RFS uniforms, and given hands-on demonstrations of vehicles and equipment, hand tools, Brigade structure and practical scenarios. The RFS Cadetship program is now in it’s third year, and one of its most important outcomes, apart from the course curriculum, is community spirit and responsibility. Students will also gain experience with casualty assistance, fire safety in the home, communications, and practical experience with Ambulance, NSW Fire Brigade and other emergency services, including the rescue helicopter in Orange.

Volunteers who have so kindly given their time and support to this course are: David Cullane - Cowra Group Officer; Ray Nash Lockwood Brigade & Cabonne Group Officer: Kyle Wallace - Rivers Brigade; Tom Nolles Crew Leader North West Orange Brigade; and Gus Meldrum - Springside Deputy Captain. Aims of the cadet training include: develop an interest in the RFS and its traditions; encourage cadets to continue involvement in the RFS and community services; and knowledge of fire safety and preparedness. Well done and thank you to all involved!

DEPRESSION NOT DEPRESSING

History in the Club proved it’s popularity yet again on Friday! Mim Loomes presented “The Great Depression in Canowindra – Then and Now 1929-1935” to an audience of over 50. Guests were treated to historical facts, which include these great household tips that are just as relevant today: Use your butter papers to line cake tins. Reuse your soap scraps, put into a soap saver for washing up or make soap balls out of them. A bunch of mint under the bed deters fleas. Use the water from boiled vegetables for soup stock or in casseroles. Use chokoes in place of pears, cook, sweeten and colour pink with cochineal. Chokoes can also make most fruits go further in jams. Egg shells broken up and dug into the soil under lemon trees increases the fruit supply. Add a few drops of vinegar to water for brunettes, and a few drops of lemon juice for blonds, rinse hair with this for a great shine. Unpick and re-use fabric and knitted garments. Previously knitted wool comes up like new if spooled into hanks, washed and rolled into balls ready for knitting. Mend & patch everything.

NEW REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT APPOINTMENT

Independent State MP Dawn Fardell has welcomed the appointment of former Parkes Mayor Robert Wilson OAM to the Central West Regional Development Australia committee. Ms Fardell said Mr Wilson’s vast experience in local government and regional development made him the logical choice for a committee aimed at promoting opportunities with in the region. Mr Wilson of Peak Hill is one of nine new members appointed to the committee, the others hailing from Lithgow, Condobolin, Orange and Bathurst. They will join Committee Chair Sandy Morrison and Deputy Chair Gavin Priestley. In announcing the a ppointments, Parliamentary Secretary for Infrastructure, Transport, Local Government and Regional Development, Maxine McKew, said: “RDA NSW will be a first point of contact for regional communities across all levels of government and will promote regional initiatives and partnerships.” Ms Fardell said appointing “strong advocates” from within the region gave local communities the confidence to approach these committees. “Robert Wilson served in local government for more than 40 years and during that time held the position of Parkes Mayor for 23 years,” Ms Fardell said. “He played an integral role in developing Parkes as a transport hub and national freight distribution centre.” “More recently he has channelled his considerable energy and knowledge into the Newell Taskforce which aims to secure improved funding for the State’s longest highway.” “Few people, if any, have a better understanding of the challenges and, more importantly, the opportunities available in regional communities.” As part of its Economic Stimulus Plan the Federal Government has included $1 billion for a Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program.

Peel off and discard the tougher outer layers of 2 fresh fennel bulbs, keeping aside the green feathery tops. Thinly slice the bulbs and toss in a bowl with the olive oil and balsamic vinegar and set aside whilst preparing the oranges. Cut the skin and pith from the oranges. Slice across ways, or cut into segments Place the sliced fennel on a plate and scatter the orange slices/segments over it. Mix the leftover juice with the remains of the dressing and pour over the salad. Finally, chop the green feathery fennel tops and sprinkle over the lot. Season with salt and pepper. Serve with a lovely piece of steak, as the vitamin C from the oranges will help your body absorb the iron from the meat.

Wayne Caslick from Cas Bar Haven Stud, about 20kms from Coolah, has been working with horses most of his life. He is the ‘eclectic horseman' meaning he selects the best method to suit the horse and rider to achieve goals based on the natural approach and horse psychology. Over the last 2 years, Wayne and his wife Jenny have been working towards establishing a Levels System whereby horse and rider, through either clinics or individual lessons, can work through a more structured system to achieve a consistent training method for both horse and rider. Wayne is an Accredited Australian Stock Horse Level 1 Coach, and Jenny holds a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, and is currently studying Cert I I I in Horse Management. Wayne and Jenny will be in Canowindra Saturday September 5 to Sunday 6 presenting a two day clinic in Natural Horsemanship. These clinics sell out fast, and as there is a limit of 12 riders, ensure your place by contacting them on 02 6844 6213. Further details are noted on the advertisement on the opposite page. His unusual way of involving the rider/owner during the whole process of starting (breaking in) a horse allows the owner to build a good relationship incorporating ground skills and into the saddle skills. Riders gain a greater understanding of every aspect of the education process as well as having lessons on the horse before they both go home. Wayne has a simplistic, gentle and supportive way of educating people to understand such complex concepts concepts that are said to be only used in higher levels of riding. Wayne and Jenny pride themselves on meeting the needs of you and your horse...naturally!

TIGERS V EAGLES

Canowindra Tigers first grade travelled to Eugowra on Sunday to play in the local derby. It was a committed Tigers outfit that turned up but they were simply outplayed. From the outset Eugowra dominated field position and ground out an impressive victory. After trailing 12-0 Charles Lawrence equalled the scores with two good tries under the posts running off Captain Coach Damian Kennedy. The Eagles hadn’t finished and after sustained pressure crossed twice more to go to the break leading 22-12. At half time Canowindra were fairly confident, having attacked the Eugowra line only three times for two tries. The Eagles didn’t let that happen as they ground the Tigers out of the game through field position and scored twice more to lead 32-12. The Tigers stuck with it and Kennedy took on the line to put Phil Butler over for a good try. This sparked the attack with Butler making numerous breaks, before Grant Cummins scored in the corner to close the gap to 32-20. All the momentum was with the Tigers when Kennedy split the defence with the line wide open, only to be called back for a shepherd, and the momentum was broken. For the Tigers, the effort was there but the Eugowra side really showed them how to grind out a victory. Justin Hancock, Charles Lawrence and Rob Burn were the Tigers best, while Snow Jones was voted players player. The Tigers have lost two more players for the season with work commitments, and Coach Kennedy will be hoping that some of the shift workers will be available for the remaining games.
