“To promote students to take global action, by creating a family and community bond, beginning in a classroom devoted to critical thinking and positivity” Kiera Kirchner Education begins in a child’s family, expands to the community and finally reaches the worldly level where my students will become global ambassadors. My responsibility as their teacher is to give them the tools, confidence and knowledge to do this. The purpose of education, especially in kindergarten through fourth grade, is to create the foundations of learning. This does not only include reading, writing, math and science skills, but also soft skills - sociality, team building and communication. By incorporating Gardner’s multiple intelligences, my students will be motivated to discover, to create, to invent and to be intrigued by our world, making them well-rounded. I recognize that each and every individual has different strengths and weaknesses. Education will be achievable starting with the basics of the classroom, this being, my caring community of learners. It will be a place where children will learn and grow, be themselves and feel comforted. This surpasses the actual learning. The students’ job in education is to experience personal successes as well as personal failures. As much as I will push for my students’ success, I want them to fail because failure is important for growth and preparation for “real life”. I expect them to participate and most importantly, to try. My students will be able to reach above and beyond their self expectations with the aid of the physical classroom. I will have diverse learning tools such as technology, many books, and useful toys (since play is such an important role in learning). I want the atmosphere to be pleasant with many windows in the classroom, bright colors, and a wide variety of students’ projects displayed on the walls of the room. My classroom setup will be adaptive to every child’s individual needs and learning strategies. Lastly, my role as the teacher is to make education attractive. This will be accomplished by making education fun and also by helping the students find their strengths, so that learning will be a positive experience. Because each student learns differently, I feel it is my responsibility to incorporate several different learning styles to my lesson plans (including Montessori, progressivism, Froebel’s gifts and constructivism). With a variety of different

assessments including observation, quizzes, verbal individualized checkups with students and parents, as well as guided learning, whole group, small group and station time, my students will be able to demonstrate their abilities. My experiences of learning in a foreign language will surely help me to relate to my ESL students. The high process quality in the class will help the students to feel invited to learn with me as well as excited to learn. I will do this by being a teacher and being a role model. I want my students to feel comfortable to talk to me and form a connection stronger than that of the educational setting. A personal relationship will be the foundation for my learning environment. In stating this, it is clear that I find my duties are not limited to the classroom. Actions speak louder than words so my job is also to play an active role in the community. I plan to continue being involved in my church as a religious education teacher. I will also participate in volunteer activities through the school district where I will be teaching. As a professional, I need to advocate for my student’s needs and keep up to date with NAEYC standards and policies. My personal brand is built not solely on my occupation but also how I behave outside of the classroom. As I will push for my students to learn and continue to learn, I myself will do this by receiving higher teaching qualifications. This will enable me to progressively become better at what I do. We never stop learning.
