SECOND GENERATION 2. Augustin Filippczyk was born on 23 Aug 1829 in Twardawa, Poland. He died on 17 Dec 1888 and is buried in St. Anna, Minnesota. Note from LDW: The birth date of 26 Aug 1829 on his tombstone is incorrect.

3. Clara Bannert was born on 12 Aug 1855 in Schwesterwitz, Poland. She died on 1 Jan 1906 in St. Cloud, Minnesota. She was buried in Calvary Cemetery in St. Cloud, Minnesota. Augustin Filippczyk married Clara Bannert, the daughter of Joseph Bannert, in Schwesterwitz on 10 May 1853. The record indicates that this is their first marriage because the marriage document indicates that the union was between “A bachelor with a virgin”. He was from Twardawa; she was from Schweisterwitz. She was 18 and he was 23. Witnesses: Joseph Matula and Josephus Gola from Schweisterwitz The marriage banns had been posted on the 4th, 5th and 6th Sunday after Pentecost. Note from the Litchy family history: “August and Clara left behind seven children. All presumed dead.” Note from Louis D. Welna: I found five additional children, only one of whom had a death certificate. I could not find the deaths or marriages for Rudolph, Joseph, Franciska and Martha.

Augustin Filippczyk and Clara Bannert had the following children born in Twardawa: i. Rudoph Theodor on 14 Apr 1854 ii. Joseph on 24 Mar 1856 iii. Joachim on 20 Mar 1858 and died on 23 Apr 1858 iv. Franciska on 7 May 1859 Children born in ? v. John on 17 Nov 1861. He married Elizabeth Strutman. vi. Annastasia (Anna) on 14 Jan 1864. She married Henry Young.

THIRD GENERATION 4. Casimir Filipczyk was born on 3 Mar 1799 in Twaradwa, Poland. He died on 24 Nov 1849 at the age of 50. Casimir was buried in Twardawa. 5. Carolina Lamatsch was born about 1800. She died in Twardawa on 26 May 1775 at the age of 75. She was buried in Twardawa on May 29, 1875. Casimir Filipczyk married Carolina Lamatsch, an organist, in Twardawa on 20 Sept 1824. The marriage document records that a “widower married a widow under 45 years” so this is not the first marriage for either spouse. She was the daughter of Mathes Lamatsch. Casimir was the son of Blasius Filipczyk. Both were 26 years old. Witnesses: Ignatz Dsiadek, an organist, and Alex Namysto of Schwesterwitz. Note from LDW: Carolina was the widow of Michael Kwoszek, whom she married on 28 Aug 1821. It was the first marriage for both, as indicated by the phrase ‘bachelor with a virgin’ on the marriage certificate. They had at least one child, Maria Amelia (Marianna?), c. 11 Dec 1823, but also Laharla, born 13 Nov 1822. I did not find Casimir’s first marriage.

Casimir Filipczyk and Carolina Lamatsch had the following children born in Twardawa.

2

i. Francisca on 10 Nov 1825 ii. Mathaus Mauritius on 12 Sep 1827 iii. Augustin on 23 Aug 1829 iv. Casper on 31 Dec 1831 v. Carl on 8 Jun 1834 vi. Antonia on 10 Sept 1836 vii. Florentina died on 12 Sept 1840 viii. Carolina on 22 Sep 1843

Note from LDW: On Casimir’s death certificate his wife Carolina is mentioned, as well as her maiden name ‘Lamatsch’. Also the following children and their birthdates: Laharla 13 Nov 1822 (Possibly a daughter from the first marriage, but I could not find the christening record), Maritz 12 Sep 1827, Augustin 23 Aug 1829, Casper 31 Dec 1831, Carl 8/6 1834, Antonia 9/3 1836 and Carolina 22 Sep 1843. Note from LDW: On Carolina’s death certificate, her maiden name, Lamatsch, is given. Children listed are: August, Caspar, Carl, Maryanna, Franciska, Antonia, and Carolina. Marianna could be the daughter, Maria Amelia, from her first marriage or a daughter for whom I could not locate a birth record!

6. Joseph Bannert was born about 1801. 7. Francisca Maria Schmidt Rzonsa was born about 1799. She died on 26 Feb 1855 in Schweisterwitz at the age of 55. She is also buried in Schweisterwitz.

3

Joseph Bannert married Francisca Maria Schmidt Rzonsa on 26 Feb 1827 in Schweisterwitz. The marriage record indicates that it was union between a “widower with a widow under 45 years” so both were previously married. He was 26 years old and the son of Nicoli Bannert from Friedersdorf. Maria was 30. Witnesses: Johann Kanig of Schweisterwitz and Franz Strenczek from Friedersdorf. Note from LDW: If this is Joseph’s second marriage, I could not find the first in Twardawa records. He probably was married at some other parish. Francisca Schmidt was the widow of Ignatz Rzonsa, b. abt 1791, and who died 28 Nov 1826 at age 35 in Schwesterwitz. I could not find the marriage record, but know her name from the birth records of their two children, so they were married about 1823. They were: Hefrosina b. 27 Jan 1824 who might have married someone named Gola, and Philip b. May 26 1826, d. 11 Aug 1827, Age 1 ¼ years. The Schmidt name does not seem to appear in any of the previous records in Twardawa, so she is probably from a different parish.

Joseph Bannert and Francisca Maria Schmidt Rzonsa had the following children born in Schwesterwitz:

i. Philip born 27 Apr 1828 ii. Anton born 6 Jun 1830 iii. Blasius born 2 Feb 1833 iv. Clara born 12 Aug 1835 v. Paulina born 27 Jun 1840 vi. Josephus? born about 1844

Note from LDW: On Francisca death record, her husband Joseph is named as well as the names and ages of their children. Listed are: Anton 24, Blasius 22, Clara 20, Paulina 15, and Josephus 12. Philip and Francisca are not mentioned; Josephus is an addition. I could not find his birth record

Blasias Filipczyk, son of Valentin, married in Twardawa on 16 Sept 1796 Hedwiga Kozubek daughter of Valintin of Twardawa. He was 23 and she was 20. Marriage document records the union between a “bachelor with a virgin”, so this is the first marriage for both. Witnesses: Franz Sczesny and Joann Namysto from Twardawa.

4

Note from LDW : On Blasius’s death record, Hedwiga, his wife, is listed along with the following children with birthdates: Casimir 1799, Anton 1811 16 Jan and Johanna 1813 22 June. Note from LDW: On Hedwig’s death record the following children are listed: Casimir, Anton, Johanna and Sebastian. I could not find Sebastian’s birth.

5 Note from LDW: Francisca’s death record mentions that Caroline marries a Filippczyk. Also, a Wilhelm Lamatsch is mentioned. How this William Lamatsch fits in, I have no idea.

Valentine Kosubek married in Twaradwa Candida Heler on 19 Oct 1777. Both were from Twardawa. He was 22 and she was 27. He was the son of Christoff Kosubek from Twardawa, and she was the daughter of George Heler from Twardawa. The witnesses were Simmon Cisok(Cuszek) and John Cieslik (Ciesfik?). Valentine Kosubek and Candida Heler had the following children born in Twardawa: 9

i. Hedwiga b. 17 Sep 1778 ii.Valentine b. 30 Jan 1780

8 Note from LDW: Here follows an oral history of Freda J. Philipsek Welna and Louis J. Welna, taken by Louis D. Welna (Summer 1979). Additional research by Louis and Judy Welna, as well as oral and/or written histories supplied by Joseph M. and Shirley Welna, Omer H. and Dorothy Jean Welna, Louis D. and Judy Welna, William and Betty Philipsek, Chester and Melissa Serafin, Lita and David Cassalino, and Sandra Litchy Nuss (all from the August line); and Lucy Kruchowski (Stanley), Florence Center (Vincent) and Clara Pierskalla (Frank) from the Kaspar line. Additional information and strategies were provided by June Kalla.

Freda: “My dad (Charles) was about 5 or 6 years old when they came to America from a town called Mechnitz in Oberschliesen (Upper Selesia).” The Litchy family history book states that “August was born in Mechnitz, Poland. His parents may have been John and Agnes Phillippczyk. August was of Polish descent, and Clara, his wife, was German. They lived in a Polish settlement in Mechnitz. August was a harnessmaker” although according to Judy Welna’s translation of Julianna’s certificate of baptism, August is listed as a gardener, “Gärtner” or perhaps just “farmer”. On June 8, 1882, August Philipsek and his wife Clara arrived in the United States on the steamship S.S. Suevia from Hamburg, Germany and Havre, France.

The Philipseks (Phielipschecks) as they appear on the SS Suevia’s manifest

Aug(ust) was 52 years old and Clara was 46. With them were their children: John (22), Anna (18), Eva (14), Julianna (9), Agnes (7), Curt (Charles) (5), Carolyn (4), and Maryanne (6mo.). There were 808 passengers on the boat. They came from Prussia. Note from LDW: It looks like August’s occupation was listed as a “worker”.

S.S.Suevia (1894) Hamburg-American Line. Built by Caird & Company, Greenock, Scotland. Tonnage: 3,624. Dimensions: 360’ x 41”. Single-screw. 14 knots. Compound engines. Two masts and one funnel. Iron hull. Launched: June 1, 1874. Made her final voyage to NY in 1894. Sold out of service in 1896 to owners in Algiers. Renamed: Quatre Amis. Sold for scrap on Oct. 1897. Sister ship: Pommerania

Chester and Melissa Serafin, as well as David and Lita Casalino, recalling what Grandpa Charles had told them that the “The boat stopped in France. (Note from LDW: While many boats that left Hamburg also stopped in Havre, France, I could not find proof of the Suevia docking in France.) While the boat was docked, mom and dad went sight-seeing with the two babies. When they didn’t come back, my older brothers and sisters went looking for them. They told me to stay on the ship. After a while, when nobody came back I went looking for them. Then everyone returned, but I wasn’t there. They told me that the captain held the boat while the family and crew looked for me, and of course they found me. It‘s lucky they found me, or the name Philipsek would not be Polish. It would be half-French because I would have married one of those French girls!”

Freda: “They left New York City, and traveled by train to Minnesota. The train stopped near Avon just long enough to let all of the family off. There were no buildings, no depots, just a whole lot of trees. They waited over an hour in the cold and in a blizzard before a cousin, I think it was Casper Philipsek, came to pick them up.” (Note from LDW: At the time I took this oral history I had no idea that August had come to America in June so I am puzzled my mom’s use of the word “blizzard”! I could not locate any information about the weather near St. Cloud, Minnesota to verify this. Perhaps if the language spoken was Polish,” blizzard” and a “hard driving cold rain” may the same word!) Casper had come to America in June of 1881. He took

them with a team of horses and a wagon. Casper probably took them to his home in Avon.”

Main Street in Avon, Minnesota (Spring 1906) about 22 years after August arrived

About a year later, on 23 June 1882, August Philipczyk bought 80 acres of farmland from J.C. Hansmeyer (Hansmeier) and his wife Karoline for $1617. The plot was located in the (N ½) and the (SW ¼) of section number thirty-five (35) in the township of One Hundred and Twenty (120), Holdingford. (Book 42 Page 490). The Spunk Brook flowed through their land. Note from LDW: The Book and Page numbers come the land records from Stearns County.

1880 Plat Map

About six years later on 17 April 1888 August Philipczik and wife sold the land he bought from J.C. Hansmeyer to Charles Litchy for Ten Hundred ($1000) dollars ( Book 67, page 21). He lost $617!
