Opening of Suez Canal (1869) Helped
cut travel time to Spain. Prompted the rise of the ilustrados, or the Filipino upper class. Many young Filipinos were thus able to study in Europe.
Cavite Mutiny (1872) Brief
uprising of 200 Filipino soldiers and workers at the Cavite arsenal. Became the excuse for Spanish repression of the Philippine nationalist movement. Ironically, the harsh reaction of the Spanish authorities served ultimately to promote the nationalist cause.
Execution of the GOMBURZA (1872) Three
priests-Jose Burgos, Jacinto Zamora, and Mariano Gomez- were executed on false charges of involvement in the Cavite Mutiny. They subsequently became martyrs to the cause of Philippine independence, and… The execution marks the start of the Philippine revolutionary period.
Noli Me Tangere (1887) The
first novel of Rizal, Noli Me Tangere, was published. “Do Not Touch Me/Touch Me Not”(John 20: 13-17)
El Filibusterismo (1891) Rizal’s
second novel, the El Filibusterismo, was published. “The Reign of Greed”-English alternate title. The novel was dedicated to the GOMBURZA.
