New York State Board of Parole 97 Central Avenue Albany, NY 12206 Re: Brian M. McCarthy / DIN:87D0088 Dear Board Members: Please DO NOT grant parole to Brian M. McCarthy. The heinous nature of the murder of Katherine Hawelka should preclude any consideration of parole. On September 1, 1986, Katherine Hawelka, a 19 year old college sophomore died after a brutal attack at the hands of Brian M. McCarthy on the campus of Clarkson University in Potsdam, NY. He had just recently been released on paroled in May of 1986. While on drugs and alcohol, he viciously raped and strangled her, beating her so severely that she was unrecognizable due to the head and face trauma she sustained. She never regained consciousness after his heinous attack. A sentence that includes the possibility of life should mean just that for the vicious act of murdering an innocent victim. As a concerned citizen, and in the interests public safety, I am asking that you DENY PAROLE for Brian M. McCarthy. He is a repeat offender who should not be released. Justice demands that he be made to spend every day of his life in prison. To lessen the emotional trauma for the victims' surviving family members, please consider giving a five-year set off before any future parole reviews. Thank you for your consideration, Sincerely,
