December 2009

Top Dog of the Month “Eddie” “Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, in hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there.” The children were nestled all snug in their bed, While visions of sugar plums danced in Ed’s head. Now Ed is our trusty Labrador retriever Who acts like Eddie Haskel on Leave it to Beaver. He’ll sit like a guard dog by the table at night Just waiting for food to come into sight. “When out on the roof there arose such a clatter, I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, Tore open the shutter and threw up the sash.” “The moon on the breast of the new fallen snow Gave a luster of midday to objects below, When what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer.” With a little old driver, in a suit of all red, I knew in a moment it was St. Nick and Ed? “More rapid than eagles, his courses they came,

And he whistled and shouted and called them by name.” Now Dasher, Now Dancer! Now Prancer and Vixen! On, Comet! On, Cupid! On Donder and Blitzen! To the top of the porch! To the top of the shed! Now dash away! Dash away! Let’s dash away, Ed! Ed was there in the morning sitting next to the tree, Wearing a red velvet kerchief as big as could be. We hugged him and kissed him and asked was it true, That St. Nick, out of every dog, only picked you? His eyes -- how they twinkled! His dimples, how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry? Ed would never let on what had happened that night. We were happy he was back after his wonderful flight. It wouldn’t be Christmas, or any holiday for sure, If Ed wasn’t under the table on a food hunting tour. He’s loyal and charming, he gives us such pride. Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without Ed by our side. –– Jude Carlough, owner

outh Shore author Janene O’Neil has released her first in a series of selfpublished children’s books about her 12 pets, known as “Nene’s Nibblers.” In her first book, “Meet the Animals,” O’Neil introduces her young readers to her pets and shows her daily routine of caring for them. At the end of the book, Nene and the Nibblers have a message for the children on how they can participate in helping no kill animal shelters and wildlife habitats in their area. Her next story in the series, due out in early 2010, will be “SandyLou Feels Blue,” which features one of Nene’s Nibblers, a gerbil named Sandy-Lou. ccording to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, an estimated 50 percent of dogs and cats in the United States are overweight or obese. One way to prevent a pet from becoming part of this statistic is to take him on daily walks. A series of leashes, handles and harnesses made by EzyDog Walking System are designed to make these walks more enjoyable. EzyDog’s leashes feature the Pyramid Pull System Handle — basically a cut-down water ski handle — that eliminates pinching and distributes the dog’s weight across the hand for better control. The leashes also feature a shock cord used to soften the blow of the occasional jerk or lunge. The leashes, in seven colors and ranging from $17-$26, come in three different shock absorbing levels based

on the dog’s size and pull strength: The Cujo, with a tight, short stretch designed for medium to large dogs; The Mutley, constructed of soft, waterproof Neoprene, ideal for joggers and bikers; and The Mongrel, designed to keep a pet comfortably at his own’s side, making it optimal for crowded areas and in training. Also available is the EzyDog Dog Harness designed to evenly disperse the tension and help the owner maintain control. Harnesses cost $20-$29. Tea for Toto

eaching for a nice calming cup of herbal tea when the weather turns chilly is nothing new, but have you ever thought of sharing with your pet? Earlier this year, The Honest Kitchen, makers of holistic, human-grade pet products, unveiled the first herbal tea for dogs, Lithe. Formulated to support healthy bone and joint function, Lithe is a looseleaf tea that is steeped in hot water the same way you would make it for yourself. Lithe is served warm or at room temperature and used to moisten pet food or rehydrate any of The Honest Kitchen’s dehydrated diets, or it can be served on its own as a supplemental beverage.

Lithe contains an aromatic blend of plants that deliver anti-inflammatory, circulatory and mobility-centered benefits, including alfalfa, white willow bark, yucca, ginger, red clover and boswellia. The tea was created for aging pets, those with pre-existing bone or joint concerns and those who are genetically prone to mobility problems. Lithe tea sells for $16 for a 6-ounce jar. Find it online at thehonestkitchen.com, and search for The Honest Kitchen’s many other products, including a selection of dehydrated raw dog and cat foods and treats like Ice Pups. Find these products online or at select pet retail stores in the area; see the Web site for locations.

any cat owners wonder, “What does my cat do when I’m not home?” In search of an answer, Friskies donned 50 cats with cat cams to participate in the first-ever cat focus group, which allowed viewers to see the magical world of cats through their eyes when their owners weren’t home. Owners then up-

loaded the photos to a flickr group at flickr. com/groups/friskiescatcam and an animal behaviorist analyzed the photos. The results were released recently in The Scratchington Post on the Friskies Web site, friskies.com/scratchingtonpost. In a survey of cat owners, Friskies found that 71 percent of cat owners think their cats sleep when they aren’t home. However, the most photographed activity was actually of cats looking out windows, followed by interacting with other house pets.

: My little girl is worried because her father has gone deer hunting. We told her that Santa's deer are a special kind of animal called a reindeer which cannot be shot. Is this true? A: Shooting Santa's flying reindeer would be, of course, a violation of international law. Ever since 1823 (“A Visit from St. Nicholas”) eight of those special animals have been strictly "off limits" to hunters of the world. Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donder, and Blitzen have lived a charmed life for nearly 200 years. But did you know their ancestors have been actively hunted for 4000 years? The reindeer (Rangifer tarandus), aka "caribou" in North America, and "tuttu" to the native Inuits, can be traced as far back as the middle pleistocene period. From the earli-

Rudolph's ancestors, in a very real sense, are responsible for the survival of millions of our northern neighbors over the centuries. They walk further than any other land animal (over 3000 miles per year). Their antlers are longer and heavier than those of any other deer, per weight volume, including the moose. Males may weigh up to 700 pounds, females up to 300 pounds. Every single part of the animal is used for either food, clothing, or tools. Greenland's hunting laws are somewhat typical, reflecting both the need to protect the species and the challenge of the nordic terrain. Rifles must be bolt action, .222 Remington or larger, and ideally fitted with a scope. Hunting licenses

SILLY STATUTE OF THE MONTH –– If a deer eats apples out of your orchard, you can collect damages from the Commonwealth, but only if the land is unposted for hunting. Got a question about animal law? are issued by the local community and bag limits are strictly enforced. Vehicles? Airplanes, helicopters, and snowmobiles are absolutely banned. Boats, however are permitted, to reach remote areas. Unlike most jurisdictions, reindeer of either sex may be taken during the hunt. This regulation accomodates another strange anomaly: Reindeer are the only deer species in the world with "unisex" antlers. Although both males and females grow seasonal antlers, few of the animals actually use them in combat. You can tell your little girl that Santa's reindeer have relatives that go back thousands of years. They have provided meat, milk, fur, bone and horn to northern hunters on three continents. But the most important ones have been saved for transportation once each year. Sleigh full of toys, anyone?

Dash: A Case of OwnerDirected Aggression By Dr. Kathryn Wrubel, Ph.D., Canine & Feline Behavior Specialist

S

ara and Jeff brought in Dash; a 10 yearold neutered male Shiba Inu. Dash ran away when they took out his ear medication so they started restraining him in a blanket. Dash shook and growled when he saw the blanket. Once Jeff wore leather gloves to medicate Dash’s ears and was bitten through the glove. Dash would growl if his owners took away food or a stolen object or handled his muzzle. He would snap if they disturbed him while resting. He stole things off of Jeff’s desk constantly while he was working. Dash would scratch and chew on woodwork if he was ignored. He would also mount the owners’ legs when they were hugging and when they cooked chicken. Dash was the owners’ first Shiba Inu. His grandfather was a champion in Japan, where Shiba Inus are sometimes admired for their aggressive nature. Dash’s mother was very frightened and his father was very aggressive so the breeder rehomed them. All of Dash’s siblings were returned for aggression. The breeder said Dash had the most “moxy” of the litter.

Cassandra Kelley, D.V.M.

Dash, a 10 year-old Shiba Inu like the one pictured here, was quite a headache for his owners before he was diagnosed with “owner-directed aggression.” their anxiety and can heighten behavior while repeatedly exaggression and distrust around posing him to the ear drops people that implement them. and syringes used to adminisFifteen years ago Dash’s diag- ter them. If Dash became reacnosis would have been “domi- tive the owners would stop the nance aggression” but the session or go back a few steps field has changed. Dogs with until he was comfortable.

Dogs with owner-directed aggression are not “alpha” dogs. They are typically anxious and insecure dogs, willful enough to use aggression to manipulate situations that make them uncomfortable. owner-directed aggression are not “alpha” dogs. They are typically anxious and insecure dogs, willful enough to use aggression to manipulate situations that make them uncomfortable. Dash’s fear of thunderstorms and insects painted a picture of an insecure dog underneath the front he put up. Avoiding confrontations and a strict leadership program would be required to resolve the ownerdirected aggression. The goal of avoiding confrontations was for Dash to be less anxious around family members and keep them safe while they implemented the program. Jeff and Sara needed to work on a leadership program with Dash which required him to follow commands for resources (food, treats, toys, going outdoors, car rides, walks, attention, games, petting, playtime, putting on the leash). If he didn’t comply, the resource went away. Jeff and Sara were told to completely ignore stealing and other attention-seeking behaviors. Dash ate a good diet and got plenty of exercise but he was lacking mental enrichment. Despite their teddy bear-like appearance, Shiba Inus were bred for hunting and tracking work. From now on the owners would feed meals out of food puzzles (toys he has to manipulate to get his food). The owners needed to desensitize Dash to the eardrops. I recommend clicker training since this method works great with fearful dogs. They would click and treat Dash for calm

K-9 CASE STUDY Dash attended obedience classes. One trainer “hung” Dash on a choke chain to correct him (they stopped seeing him). Jeff was instructed to alpha-roll Dash to show him who was boss. One trainer tested Dash’s resource guarding skills by putting a dozen tennis balls on the ground. Dash guarded all of them simultaneously. Dash was frightened of thunderstorms and small flies. Jeff kept pillows next to the bed arranged in a pattern on the floor for Dash for when he was anxious during thunderstorms. One day Jeff stacked the pillows. Dash noticed this, barked, unstacked them, arranged them in the usual pattern on the floor, and left the room. Dash had owner-directed aggression. There was a clear genetic component to his behavior (a mix of mom’s fearfulness and dad’s aggression). Dash engaged in destructive attention-seeking behavior and stole items for attention when he was bored. Some techniques Jeff and Sara were taught to alter Dash’s behavior likely made him more aggressive. Hanging dogs and alpha-rolling dogs increase

December 2009

Dash’s mounting behavior was not sexual. It was a “displacement behavior,” a normal behavior that appears out-ofplace in times of conflict, excitement, or anxiety. Dash’s mounting was triggered by excitement. Shiba Inus are extremely food-motivated hence Dash’s excitement around chicken. We discussed downplaying excitement, avoidance, and redirecting onto appropriate outlets. Dash enjoyed clicker training and learned to work for his resources. He loved his food puzzles. If Dash stole something or became destructive Jeff and Sara ignored him or left the room. Dash would grab decorative pillows and flail them around. When the owners left the room he would drop them, bewildered. Once Dash stole a shoe and stopped mid-dance and dropped it to bark at the owners for leaving in frustration. Eventually he stopped stealing as much. After 8 weeks, the owners could get drops in Dash’s ears twice a week. He would still occasionally mount but sometimes quickly grabbed their leg and walked away. Dash was “so much better and easier to live with.” Dr. Wrubel is energized by her ability to resolve behavior issues by teaching people and their pets positive-based behavior modification techniques. She works at the Essex County Veterinary Referral Hospital (North Andover), the Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital (Woburn), and the Port City Veterinary Referral Hospital (Portsmouth, NH).

Dog walker offers free service for cancer patients

M

aria Silva of Red Rover Dog Walking is offering free dogwalking services for Barnstable area residents undergoing cancer treatments.  Silva said she was motivated by her experience with her husband who underwent treatment for Lymphoma.   “It was an 8-month process during which I found myself overwhelmed and accepting help from all angles.   One of the most beneficial gifts I received was when a friend offered to exercise my dog.  Often times going through cancer results in a shifting of priorities and unfortunately the dog was not one of them.  It was such a relief to have someone help out in this area.”   Red Rover is located in  Marston Mills on the Cape.  For more information visit  www.redroverdogwalking.com  Editor’s note: This item was incorrectly printed in last month’s Pet Gazette. am Mojo –– a Siberian Husky –– one of the most heroic breeds of dogs known to man. There are lots of characteristics that make us a great pet, and some that are not so great and could pose a challenge to new dog owners. I personally think we are great in all that we do but I could be somewhat biased. First of all we were developed to run, pull sleds and run for long periods of time. We will require lots of activity. We originated from northeastern Asia, and were designed to carry light loads at great distances. We eventually made our way to Alaska where we earned titles in different racing tournaments, some of which were at distances of 400 miles in the harsh winter terrain and elements of Alaska. In 1925, Nome, Alaska was cut off from the life saving supply of serum it needed to combat a diphtheria outbreak. A blizzard prevented any normal means of

transportation to deliver the serum. A relay team of sled dogs made the 650 mile trek through blizzards, sub-zero temperatures and treacherous terrain to save the remote village of Nome. Balto was the lead dog in this life saving team, he even saved his musher’s life on this journey. Balto had a statue erected in his honor for this heroic serum run. He also had a movie made about his legendary trip. We can’t all be Baltos, but us huskies all try. Because of our breeding in cold climates, we have a special double coat to protect us in the sub-zero temperatures we faced. The undercoat is soft and insulates against the cold. The outercoat grows guard hairs that grow through the undercoat and protect from the snow and ice. We will shed at least once a year, more often in more heated climates. We will require some brushing during the shedding season, which can produce an excessive amount of dog hair. We are friendly, gentle and alert, however we do not make good guard dogs as we are not possessive. We are not

aggressive towards people or other dogs, because of our natural instinct to work as a team. We are world-renown escape artists, if there is a sliver of a door opened, we will run through it. This is an inherited reaction that is not our fault! Because of our independence, our ability to focus on training can be difficult for us. My aloofness, determination and stubbornness should not be counted against me, as those traits are what got us Huskies to Nome on the great serum run. When we have a job to do we are happy which is why we are in the working group. We are very affectionate toward our family and other dogs, but we are also predatory toward small animals due to our breeding to survive the winters of Alaska. With our varied markings we can be wolf-like in our appearance, however our outgoing nature will pull you into our world and let you become part of all that is great in being a Siberian Husky! Seasonal selections for pets and pet lovers By Joe Breault, Pet Gazette Contributor

t may seem like only yesterday that we were packing up our best friends and heading off for a day at the

beach, but the holidays are nearly upon us. Finding

that special something for the pets in our lives or the people in our lives who have pets can be a daunting task. After all, your dog or cat can’t make out a holiday shopping list, and the selection of items that are available can be overwhelming — not only to the senses but also to the wallet. Looking for

something new and different? Well, my troubled pet parent,

pull up an ice block and lend an ear, because what follows is a selection of locally offered gift ideas that may help you keep the Grinch at bay.

Variety: The spice of life

First, a few selections for the pet parents. A selection of Dandy Designs products are being offered at The Healthy Animal at 808 Washington St. in Pembroke. Dandy Designs

tree to seven swans a-swimming, birds have a special place in the Christmas season. Backyard Birdwatchers in Kingston offers a number of items to keep the wild birds in our yards happy and healthy during the holiday season and the cold winter months that follow. Lisa Fitzsimmons,

the owner of Backyard Birdwatchers, said a popular item is the edible bird treat. “We have large hanging bell shapes and wreathes that are made out of bird seed or nuts. The birds love them,” she said. Another interesting item on hand is the seed house.

The Backyard Birdsong Guide has pictures and descriptions of the birds that also has a button which plays the bird song for you, making it easier to identify the bird by its call.

“These are bird houses that are covered with a layer of bird seed. Once the seeds are eaten, there is still a birdhouse underneath for the birds to use,” Fitzsimmons explained. For the humans that enjoy watching the birds, Fitzsimmons also recommended “The Backyard Birdsong Guide.” “It’s a book with pictures and descriptions of the birds that also has a button which plays the bird song for you, making it easier to identify the bird by its call,” she said. Another standby for any bird watcher on your shopping list is the “Birds of Massachusetts Field Guide.” Whether peering out the window or out walking in the woods, the guidebooks are a handy and effective tool in helping to identify our feathered friends and have been a staple of bird watchers for generations. By far, one of the more popular items on hand would be the Squirrel Buster Bird Feeder. Few things cause more irritation to a bird watcher who has filled their feeder with seeds than the sight of a squirrel greedily stuffing its cheeks while hanging off the feeder. They seem to have an uncanny ability to defeat ordinary measures of keeping them at bay. However, this feeder uses a clever counterweight design that foils the squirrel. The counterweight can be easily adjusted to individual taste to accommodate as large a bird as you desire. If you want to keep squirrels as well as blue jays and other large birds off, simply turn the adjustment screw —simple and effective. The weight of the bird or squirrel forces the lower portion of the feeder to drop into a position that cuts off the flow of seeds. As soon as they leave, it resumes its normal, open position. For the up-and-coming bird watchers and families, Fitzsimmons suggested Bird Bingo and Birdopoly board games as well as card games featuring birds and animals of North America, from Professor Noggin. And for your indoor tree,

Orijen utilizes a high-protein, lowcarbohydrate and grain-free formula. This dog food has been consistently rated as five- to six-star quality by consumer groups and is among the more sought-after brands. Using holistic ingredients and human-grade protein sources, they provide a healthy and nutritionally balanced alternative to widely distributed commercial foods.

don’t forget the bird themed Christmas tree ornaments that are also in supply.

season of giving

Gifts of the heart are among the easiest to give and also offer the

Warming blanket greatest comfort. In closing, please remember that rescue organizations and shelters are always in

need of volunteers or donations. An old blanket or comforter that is clean and in good condition can help warm the heart and the body of a shelter animal this season. A toy that your pet no longer plays with or seems interested in may brighten the life of shelter animal as well. Rescue groups are also looking for kind-hearted volunteers to assist in the placement, evaluation, training and care of animals in need. North East Rottweiler Rescue is presently looking for volunteers as well as foster homes for displaced pets. N.E. Springer Spaniel Rescue is also actively seeking volunteers to assist with its rescue efforts. These are just a few of the groups in need of help. And remember, it could be the gift that keeps on giving: As non-profit organizations, some donations may qualify for a tax deduction.

Raising a Fence for Mandy

By Shelley Hines & Rai Grigonis

I

n 2008, a stray dog was brought to Blue Dog Shelter in Brockton. The animal was almost bald and at least 10 pounds underweight. Her gait was unsteady and she was weak. She presented with fear and aggression, as anyone might that had lost their “pack”. This Sheppard mix was 10+ in years. The greatest of care was showered over this canine. She was fed high quality food, thoroughly cleaned, given a veterinarian work up and exercised daily. Her trainer used sophisticated techniques to assist her in having a good life. Volunteers offered their hearts, but the stray that became known at Mandy, just didn’t connect. This shelter brings dogs and families together. They aren’t the easiest place to adopt from, as the animal is top priority. The adopting family has to apply giving references. Their intentions regarding care for the animal are screened with many questions. They must also participate in some training. A good connection with the companion animal is a must. And even though the family may be anxious to get their dog home, everything is done to ensure that there are no mistakes on anyone’s part. This is why they have a 97% success rate! People believe that canines think like humans. But dogs are pack animals and their behavior is very specific. We know they experience emotions and also have different personalities. Mandy showed this to be true. She wasn’t the warm and fuzzy petting type and didn’t really like the other dogs in the shelter. If another dog was being patted, she would go after them. It perplexed the Blue Dog Team. No one seemed interested in adopting Mandy. She lived at the shelter for a year, but showed little happiness. It was killing everyone to see the darkness in this dog’s eyes. What else could they do for this elderly dog? Our story starts here. I received an email saying that a dog was looking for help. I receive these emails often and love animals, but my husband and I weren’t looking to add to our “pack”. When I saw Mandy’s eyes, I said out loud “We need to help this dog”. I left the computer to make dinner. When my husband, returned home he saw Mandy’s picture still on the screen. Odd that the screen saver didn’t

December 2009

shut down as it usually does. His immediate response was “We need to help this dog”. I wasn’t shocked to hear Rai say this, as we run our lives by our hearts and have shared many “divine” moments. From our courtship, to finding our modest home in Brockton, we have been guided to our life together. Mandy was no exception. and asked on Mandy. We wanted to meet her as soon as possible. Owner/Founder Jeni Mather greeted us at the

shelter and we realized that we knew one another from a radio show that I’d hosted years ago. Interesting… another coincidence? Jeni pulled no punches. She clearly had a big heart and was concerned for this animal. We came to learn that after much delineation, the board of this non-kill shelter had voted to euthanize the stray. That decision was made the very evening we had received the email. Rai and I both felt that Mandy was calling out to us. When we met Mandy she brushed by us somewhat interested, but not so sure. She took another round and put my hand gently into her mouth. It felt to me like an old friend, saying “nice to see you again”. She may have had fear and been assertive with other dogs, but this girl was just looking for her pack. Jeni’s began to tear up and said this was the first time she had really seen any light in Mandy’s eyes. In our hearts, Rai and I felt the magic. Jeni went back to the board and asked for a reconsideration. We were thrilled to hear that they would entertain the idea of our visiting with our new friend. On our next visit we learned that one of the volunteers used to live on our street. She along with many in our neighborhood, cared for a domesticated goose that had lived outside. We named the goose Lucy. I was sad to have to tell this woman that Lucy had died. “I know” she replied, “I’ve had her cremated and would like to invite you to the service.” Was this another coincidence? Several visits with Mandy introduced her to our kids and

our dogsitter friend. All agreed that Mandy should come home with us. She had finally found her family in our home.. JM Pet Resort founded the Blue Dog Shelter, so we gladly purchased our doggy items from them. A kind volunteer insisted on helping us to pay for it. It’s been remarkable seeing the good in people come through the love of an animal. Rai and I are walking a lot, as Mandy just loves to be outside. We now realize that this special girl needs to have her own yard. The materials needed to fence in our yard are approximately $1400 without labor. People have already offered to help put up the fencing and Brockton’s Home Depot is supporting us with the products. We’ve realized that again, this is a wonderful opportunity for people to come together in the name of “Raising A Fence For Mandy”. We are gracefully reaching out to our community to make this possible. If you’re able to contribute to help this dear creature live out the last years of her life in freedom and joy, Mandy thanks you deeply and we honor you for sharing. Are Horses Dumb Animals?

By Rick Larsen Pet Gazette Columnist

D

o you think horses are dumb animals? I used to think they were pretty smart, but I know one horse who doesn’t seem that interested in self preservation. If he was able to think things through, on the Wednesday night before Halloween, he would have kicked one or more trespassers right over the fence. That evening, someone with a pair of clippers and a black-hearted agenda relieved this magnificent ebony horse of his tail. No trace of the hair was found on the ground. Presumably it was taken for use in someone’s party costume.

HORSE TALK This horse lives on the South Shore, out in the middle of a pasture with another horse. He didn’t seem troubled by the change in his appearance even as the owner wept at the prospect of watching the hair grow back at the rate of per-

say nature has hardwired him to accept his fate. That is why we never see animals feeling sorry for themselves. For all their majesty and grace, this characteristic makes horses such fragile and delicate creatures. We would do well to have some empathy for this horse and a million more just like him. He is not a dumb animal. Truly, I think he is put

The owner will have to ensure that the horse’s bare “stump” is protected from frostbite this winter. In the spring, the horse will have to rely on other horses to swish flies from his body without being able to return the favor. Yet, as I scrutinized the damage, he seemed to welcome the prospect of having his hindquarters scratched and examined. He seemed totally accepting of how his body had been altered. Why? I had to deal with anger, fear, confusion, and a desire to help the owner seek justice. I spoke with people who could give me insight as to why someone might be so arrogant and callous as to cut off a tail. I called friends to tell them about the incident. They all expressed shock and anger. I was inwardly relieved that none of my horses suffered the same fate. Then I felt guilty for feeling that way. I visited with the horse on the night after the incident, but he shared none of my angst. He seemed unaffected – even happy for all the attention. He didn’t seek justice, pity, or atonement. He simply waved his stump around as though the tail still swished from side to side. One could call him a dumb animal, but I disagree. I

here to help us grow spiritually… when we are ready. He does this by example. And its not just horses. Just about every animal that we have ever domesticated offers us innumerable opportunities to choose between meanness and kindness. Our job should be to recognize when we come to those forks in the road, where it concerns our animals, our friends, our family, or even our so-called enemies. Can we follow the example of the horse, honor him, and take heed of his benevolence, or do we choose to wear a mask of apathy, cruelty or indifference, and does that mask have a horsehair wig? Rick Larsen lives in Marsh-

field, Massachusetts with seventeen other mammals, including one wife, one son, three daughters, four horses, six cats, and two dogs; one that is occasionally flatulent and the other one who rolls around in anything smelly and dead. Just to be clear, that last bit describes the dogs. Learn more about Rick and his horses at www.ricklarsen.net. Aw heck! I can’t really leave the article on that note, coming into Christmas and all, so let me summarize this way. As we leave Halloween behind and look towards Christmas, I urge each of us to be aware of our feelings, our motives, and what we teach our animals and our children about ourselves through our actions. We can show each other and our children how special animals are and what they give, expecting little in return, and appreciating whatever we can offer for their “creature” comfort. Consider how unselfishly a wet tongue, a purr, or a nicker is offered. Pay it forward in the form of a smile, a kind word, or a donation to the less fortunate in the form of money or time. I know one horse that is apt to find some jars of hair restorer in his stocking. It didn’t help me, but then I wasn’t trying to grow a new tail.

Cinnamon is a small mare in her early teens. Cinnamon gets her name from the unique color of her coat which is Chestnut but is a much brighter color that almost resembles cinnamon. Cinnamon is approximately 14.3 hands. Sassy is an older Bay Thoroughbred Mare, approximately 15 hands. She is well schooled and possesses the kindest brown eyes. She came from an unfortunate situation, but she has now put on some weight and is coming along nicely!

MISSY is a truly delightful dog. She has gorgeous GSD black and tan coloring and is an incredibly sweet, mildmannered dog we estimate to be thirteen years of age. For Missy, though, it appears that age is only a number. This lady still exhibits youthful energy and a true enthusiasm for daily adventures. Above all, Missy loves people. She wants nothing more than to be with her person and is eager to please.

Moose is a male English Bulldog mix about 11 years old. Originally adopted from our shelter 5 years ago, Moose was recently surrendered due to a change in living arrangements. He is a "senior" in years, but still has lots of "get up and go". He also loves to snuggle on a big bed, get covered up with a little blanket, and take an afternoon nap (don't we all?) . Due to his age, we recommend no toddlers - as they would be too active for him. Moose may be happiest as the only pet. He would be a good companion for a person of any age and may be a perfect match for an older person who enjoys the same thing - leisurely walks, afternoon naps, quiet companionship. My name is Prince, and I am a gray male Tabby DLH. I was left outside the shelter on a Monday, the day the shelter is not open. A volunteer saw me frozen in one spot I was just so scared, came over and just picked me up. Thank goodness my heart said. At first I was scared in the shelter too, now I am doing better and enjoy the attention of staff and volunteers. My owners must realize that abandonment of an animal is a crime, but then I was left when no one was around. I am hoping that my next home takes the responsibility of a pet much more seriously. My medical is scheduled to be completed soon.

Betty is a short hair spayed 12 week old super loving kitty. She is hoping her sister Winnie will also get a home. Maybe a home together. She and her sister were found outside in Quincy at twoweeks old. A very kind lady bottle fed them till they were old enough to eat on their own. Super loveable, a real lap kitty.

ANGEL is a large mostly black 8 year old female of medium activity level who gets along with both cats and dogs!

CANDY is an short-haired 8-9 year old GSD with light tan coloring accented with a little black on her back. Candy came to GSRNE after her owners, who were not in good health, considered putting Candy to sleep because they could no longer take care of her. The owners’ vet knew Candy as a sweet and gentle dog that had so much left to give so he asked the owners to surrender Candy instead. The owners agreed and the vet then called GSRNE to see if we could help find this lovely girl her new forever home.

Ginger is our beautiful orange female. At six months old, she’s active and engaged like any kitten, but is cuddly and adorable!

Stanley is a handsome young adult kitty. He would do best as the only kitty. OK, with older children.

Sookie is our fivemonth old tuxedo; she’s a treat! She loves people and has a very sweet disposition. She loves to play and frolic with her friend Ginger.

Maria, this girl has it all - spunk and love! She is our current greater, meeting everyone at the door to ensure she gets first loves.

Tara is our beautiful black female, fivemonths old. She’s a bit shy, but with the right set of arms, she’ll slip into a peaceful purr that will melt your heart!

Pepper our senior Shih Tzu is still looking for his very own home - we are asking a very small adoption fee to ensure he will get a great home. He adores other pets, especially kitties.

Emme is a beautiful sweet tabby, about 5-years old. She was found wandering. Taken in by a caring person. Emme would like to be the only cat. She is quite shy around other cats. An adult home would be best. Up to date on shots and neutered. You can call her foster mom for an appointment 508866-5582.

Hello we are Barney and Bailey. We are shy. We have come a long way since our rescue. One of our siblings was taken by coyotes. This was a very frightening experience. This has left us somewhat scared. We need a quiet loving home to help us find trust again.

Welcome to our world of orange tabby kittens! Our names are: Angel, Aaron, Teddy Bear, Tuffey and Wiley. We were rescued by our foster mom. We have been combo tested and have first shots. We are now 11 weeks old and ready for our forever home.

•  We encourage shelters to send news of successful adoptions.

STRIDER: had lived in a loving country home for seven years before his owner passed away after a long illness. Strider’s owner had asked that his family take good care of his beloved pet in his absence, as Strider was the apple of his owner’s eye. True to their word, the family took Strider into their home, but soon realized that their busy city household with two other dogs was not an ideal home for Strider. Strider's intelligence, loyalty, and independence will make him a wonderful dog for a confident and GSDsavvy adopter.

Montana is a beautiful adult female who came to our shelter when her owner could no longer keep her due to family issues. Although she was very scared at first, she has become good friends with many of the staff and has a very playful side. Due to her large size and strength, Montana can not go to a home with small children. Because of her breed and size, Montana needs a family with previous large dog experience and good leadership skills. Montana is beginning to play with selected dogs at doggie daycare and we do not know if she has any experience with cats. If you think you are the right family for Montana, please come to meet her at our new location at 1014 Pearl St. during any regular shelter hours.

Bailey is a mixed breed dog who came to our shelter due to some family issues. She is about 1.5 years old and weighs about 47 lbs. She is a very pretty brown and white dog with a long tail. Bailey is an energetic dog who plays hard and will need consistent exercise. She will do best with an owner who has good leadership skills. Her energy level might not be appropriate for small children and she does not like cats! Bailey enjoys playing with her dog friends.

Zack is a handsome older dog in need of a home for his senior years. Zack is a mixed breed dog with bright blue eyes; he weighs about 70 lbs. Despite his age, Zack has energy enough for play and nice long walks. At our doggie daycare, he is out in small groups of dogs and seems to enjoy that. If you are looking for a calm canine companion, please come to meet Zack during any regular shelter hours.

Scrappy If you like the high energy and playfulness of a small breed dog, Scrappy is just the pet for you! This happy little guy came to us as a stray and now needs a great new home. Scrappy loves to play with other small dogs but loves to spend time with people as well. Scrappy has a lot to say and so is not appropriate for an apartment or condo. If you would like to have this cute guy as a new member of you family, please come to meet him during any regular shelter hours.

All we want for Christmas is a HOME for Tazjah and all she wants for Christmas is to have a real home and family. Tazjah is a great dog, who is playful and active – and she has been waiting and waiting and waiting for a family to call her own. She is a spayed 3 ½ year old dog, who is really a tomboy. She plays like a “boy” dog and loves, really loves, to dodge and chase. She has waited too long for someone other than the shelter staff knowing how great she is. If Tazjah’s demeanor was in another breed dog, she would have been adopted a long time ago, but many pitbulls have to wait and wait to be adopted and Tazjah is one of them. Come by and meet her. Please make all of our holiday wishes come true. Olive is a 1 year old spayed female pit bull terrier who thinks that she is a lap dog. Really she does. She might be a dog but all she wants it to do is spend time with and around her humans. Olive is still young and puppyish…she plays with her toys and enjoys life. She is a loving and sweet dog who loves resting in the sun. What could be better than a sunny fall day in the field with a friend and a big squeaky toy? Spirit is an 8 year old spayed female domestic medium hair who was found as a flea-infested stray. We thought we might have been lucky since Spirit was microchipped, but her owners had never registered the number. We can't imagine why no one came looking for Spirit - she's is a sweet cat who is also gorgeous, with one blue eye and one golden eye.

FRANKIE is a beautiful grey and white female kitty with medium length fur. She is 5 or 6 years old and has always been an indoor only cat, due in part to her being declawed. (PFC always recommends that declawed or not, cats should stay indoors). Her previous owners were upset to learn that a member of the family was allergic to Frankie and she had to be surrendered. Frankie would like to be the only pet in a home that has no children. She has all her shots, is spayed and litter trained. She loves to be petted and rewards whoever is being so kind with a loud purr. Please come in and make friends with Frankie and bring her to your forever home. KANSAS is a very sweet and gentle declawed black and white fellow. He is 8 years old and came in with his sister Kayla. When a new baby came to their home it was discovered she was allergic to cats and Kansas and his sister were surrendered to PFC. Kansas is good with kids and likes other cats which allows him to get along fine at the shelter. He will be a wonderful pet for the right owner. Kansas says, ³I love PFC, but I would like to go to a nice family so I can make them happy.² He is neutered, has all his shots and is litter trained.

ROXIE is a young female Siberian Forest Cat. This breed has a long history in Russia and has been document as early as the year 1000! Siberian Forest cats are the national cat of Russia. Our Roxie has tortoises shell coloring with a beautiful slash of buff across one side of her chin and neck. She is a very calm cat who has very soft fur that despite being longhaired sheds very little. She likes to give hugs when she is picked up. She has a beautiful face. Roxie is spayed, has all her shots and is litter trained. Everyone who meets her falls in love.

OPAL and DIAMOND are littermates and would make wonderful pets for children. They are about 4 months old. They enjoy playing, chasing and of course, being petted and cuddled. Opal and Diamond are females and will be spayed when they are 6 months old. They both have small white marking, but they are predominately a beautiful blue grey. They are very beautiful thanks to mom who is a Siamese cat who has already been adopted. Come to our shelter on Wednesdays from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm or Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for adoption hours. If these times do not work for you, call our Hotline to make an appointment to meet all of our kittens. It is still kitten season!

This gentle, giant, handsome boy, Sam, is a three year old German Shepherd / Lab cross male Sam is neutered, up to date on rabies and distemper and is heart worm negative. He is a light blond color, a slim light foot 80 pound dog that is high energy and needs active people. He is a very affectionate dog with a good disposition. Loves to go for leash walks, loves to go for rides in the car and loves to play ball and run around the yard. He does OK with dogs but would do well as the only pet, no cats or small toddlers but older kids 15-years and up are OK. His previous owner has moved and cannot take him so Sam is looking for a loving caring responsible home that will KEEP HIM for good. If your interested call MHS to meet Sam. 781-335-1300 or email [email protected].

Hi my name is Scooby Girl, I am about 10 + years young old spayed Chocolate Lab / cross, UTD on all shots, HW Lyme negative, de flea, de worm. I have a very good disposition and have much love to give. I love to go for walks - not long walks but enough to enjoy. I do well with dogs and cats, OK with older kids, no small toddlers. I was given up because by previous owner has foreclosed on their house. They are going where dogs are not allowed. MHS animal shelter has taken me in and thank goodness, because on my medical records it showed that my previous owner was ready to euthanize me. I am now looking for a loving, caring and responsible home that will keep me in my golden years! The MHS volunteers call me an "Angle" MHS is taking care of my skin and coat, I am getting medicated baths and my new coat is looking good ! If your interested in me, come and see me at the shelter.
