Pediatric Developmental Milestones – Purpose
– Reasons:
– To check how a child grows (physically, mentally, and socially)
– To have an insight on how children are developing at certain ages
– To determine what children can do at a certain age
– In the far future, I want to be a parent
– To gain knowledge of certain developmental issues that could be helped
– Research and worry now, so I can feel prepared and have certain expectations with my kids
Key Points – Physical Growth: how a child should grow – Motor Skills: certain activities at certain ages
– Speech and Language: communication – Literacy/ Education: learning through books and increasing knowledge – Delays/ Disorders: issues. Consequences the child might face in the future
Research Topics – Specific words/ amount of words and types of books that the child should know by a certain age – What certain delays/ disorders a child might have and how it can impact them later on in their lives – Certain motor skills they should be able to perform by a certain age range
Current Event Slide – “Toddler Development Delayed by Too Much Screentime, Research Suggests” by Chiara Giordano
– Elaborates on the concept that children around the age of two to three-years-old are scoring lower on tests when they are five-yearsold due to an overuse of technology – Encouraged for health professionals to work with parents to create media plans that would limit the amount of time kids should and should not be on their devices – Connects to pediatric development since technology is inhibiting their educational learning
Product – What? – Create an educational children’s book that focused on the alphabet, animals, and sounds – Make an animation of the book and a separate recording a sounds to go along with the book
– How? – Ask Dr. Sierra about what children should be reading at certain ages
– Look through children’s books for inspiration – Plan how to create the storyline and the physical book – Contemplate ways to create the video and recordings in relation to the specific characters of my book
Conclusion – What I Hope to Learn: – What kids should be doing and learning during their developmental stages
– Specific types of developmental delays/ disorders and the methods that will help a child cope with it – Necessary information for a parent to know if they want or have kids
I would like to thank my mentor, Dr. Sierra, for giving me the opportunity to shadow her every Friday these past months. I would like to thank my teacher, Mrs. Click, for letting explore the world where I am not constantly focusing on academics I would also like to thank the Evaluators and my ISM friend for taking their time out of their schedule to come hear my presentation.
Lastly, I would like to thank my parents for staying by my side and supporting me always.
