5ème Grand prix européen des premiers films 1. Purpose of the contest and funding Under the title 5ème Grand prix européen des premiers films, the Fondation Vevey Ville d’Images (Vevey, Switzerland) launch the fifth edition of a contest designed to support the making of first films. Candidates are required to submit a film project that can be put into production thanks to the initial means of the grant – a sum of 10'000 euros per winner. The film has to be completed during the year following the announcement of the results. The movies produced at this occasion will be shown at the occasion of the next festival Images’ which will take place in September 2010 in Vevey. The purpose of the contest is to enable the production of personal films, by intervening at the moment when filmmakers, stepping out of formal training, need recognition for the first time as the authors of independent works. The process of the contest is based on the following considerations: - Recognizing schools as institutions which are essential for the training of future filmmakers; - Wanting to intervene at a critical juncture of a filmmaker’s career, i.e. when he or she is starting out in the filmmaking profession; - Offering an opportunity which, because of its inherent limits, is meant to stimulate the creativity, inventiveness and pugnacity of the filmmakers; - Allocating a monetary award which will serve as an initial source of finance for the film’s production. By film, it is meant any audiovisual production, without any length restriction, whether cinema (16 mm, 35 mm) or video (multistandard), which is both self-contained and can be shown in public projection. No a priori is made as to genre or production medium. Projects which are commissioned works will not be taken into consideration. The contest is judged on the basis of a dossier. Candidates will not be interviewed in person. 2. Candidates The contest is aimed at graduates from European cinema schools and audiovisual departments, classes of 2008, 2007 or 2006. 3.
