WALK THE WAY
GOOD FRIDAY 21ST MARCH 2008 6-9PM
This modern retelling of the betrayal, death and resurrection of Jesus is the perfect way to experience Good Friday, 21st March 2008. A cast of hundreds will dramatise the story at locations across Winchester in the most ambitious free theatrical event ever to hit the city. At 6pm, Jesus and his followers enter the city at Oram’s Arbour, where a festival is going on under the watchful eye of the occupying Roman army. At the Great Hall Jesus meets with his disciples for the Last Supper. As discontent grows in an atmosphere of fear and recrimination, Jesus is betrayed and brought to trial before Governor Pontius Pilate and then before King Herod outside the Law Courts. Condemned, Jesus drags his cross down the High Street, past the Buttercross before being crucified with two thieves outside the Cathedral. Dead, he is taken down from the cross and buried. Then, the miraculous resurrection takes place. The production will mix classical and modern acting styles, using local talent, supported by musicians and dancers, lighting and sound. Spectators can follow the action or view the entire play on giant screens at the Cathedral and Law Courts. With humour and conviction, the Winchester Passion will put the challenge of Jesus back on the streets and before the crowds - just how it first began.
