Development Karate Sharks Tournament

Monthly interviews with sports personalities

Addington Karate Club hosted a friendly development tournament between seven clubs from four different styles at Addington Primary School on the 29 July 2006. The tournament was organised by members of the Shellcross Shotokan Karatedo South Africa Club and the Shito Ryu Addington Beach Club. There were representatives from Funakoshu Karate - Newcastle; Hayashi Ha Shitoryu - Kai - Pinetown; Shito - Ryu South Coast - Addington Beach; Shito - Ryu South Coast - Port Shepstone; Shotokan Karatedo South Africa - Durban North; Shotokan Karatedo South Africa Shellcross; Shotokan Karatedo South Africa - Tongaat. Honoured guests included Shihan Cas Pretorius (Head of Shito-Ryu South Coast) with his wife Sensei Elsie and Shihan Peter Shamier (Kofukan Shukokai Karate) and his wife Sensei Hazel The aim of the tournament was to encourage the younger students to participate and to teach them how a tournament runs. Furthermore, friendship between students from other clubs and styles was encouraged as these students were now in the same team. Students were encouraged to shout for their for their team mates who were from different clubs. All participants in the tournament received a colour participation certificate. and the students in the teams who came first, second and third were each rewwarded wirh Gold, Silver or Bronze medals. Denric Verster opened the Addington Karate Club at the Addington Primary School in 2001. He was introduced to Karate at the age of six and has been training Buduryu style for the past twenty-eight years with Sensei Cas Pretorius. He achieved his Junior Black Belt when he was fourteen and his Senior Black Belt in 1991. In 1993 Denric obtained Northern Transvaal and SA Police colours and represented Keegan playing for Sharks against Free State Cheetahs South Africa in Italy, France, Germany and Switzerland in the national team. His Karate Club currently has eighty students aged from five years old to seventy one!
