Franz Schubert " Quartettsatz" inCminor, D.703 (1820,for string quartet)

Franz Schubert: "Quartettsatz" ma ke K l-Maina, D. 703 (MH 1820, no ka leoku pdha pila)

After "Death and the Maiden," Schubert's twelfth string quartet - the Quartettsaz (German for "Quartet-Movement") remainsthe most popular and enduring ofhis fifteen quartes. As its name suggests,it is not a full blown four movement string quarte! but a single movement that was originally intended as the first movement of a multi-movement work. This is bom out by the existence of forty-one measuresof a projected second movement, Andante in 3/4 time. The Quartettsaz received its posthumous premiere on March I, 1867 in Vienna Other compositions which Schubertbeganin the same year were similarly abandoned, for the artist was experiencinga severeidentity crisis at the time.

Divertimento No. I in B-JIat

Allegro Mmuexo (Allegretto) AdaCto Menuefto Rondo (Allegro)

There is still some question conceming the authorship of the Divertimentos. Suffice it to say, however, that the works appear to contain enough stylistic fingerprints to attribute them to Mozart. The first movement features a lively main theme and a carefree, somewhatmellow altemate theme. The erlrlling lufrnuet (Allegretto) is charming in its graceful main theme and relaxed, somewhat playful nio section. The Adagio is dreamy and even seemsto yawn when the music several times indulges in long pauses. The second Minuet movement is livelier and a bit more colorful and playful than the first. Its trio is also more animated than its earlier counterpart. The concluding Rando (Allegro) is energeticarrd colorful. with the C section of its A-B-A-C-A form a deliciously droll and even somewhat exotic episode. A wonderful light composition ofearly Mozart originally scored for basset-homs and bassoon, tonight's performance is adaptedfor oboe hio. - Intermission -
