Outline of the Discussion Program and the Post-Program Session of the 36th Ship for Southeast Asian Youth Program in 2009 1. Purpose The Discussion Program intends to encourage the Participating Youths (PYs) (1) to deepen their understanding of the current situation of the various fields in each country; as well as (2-a) to promote mutual understanding; (2-b) to improve the PYs’ skills in exchanging views with other participants; and, (2-c) to enhance their abilities in presenting their own ideas in public, through a free-flowing and active exchange of opinions. Meanwhile, the Post-Program Session intends to utilize the results of the Discussion Program and encourage the PYs’ active participation in social activities after the SSEAYP. 2. Theme (1) Common Theme The common theme for the Discussion Program and the Post-Program Session in SSEAYP 2009 shall be: “Youth Participation in Social Activities” The youth, as young leaders, are expected to play an important role in the revitalization and prosperity of their societies.

This Discussion Program/

Post-Program Session will provide an opportunity for the PYs to reflect on the importance of their participation in social activities by understanding the current situation in each country and discussing possible activities in various fields.

Their

active participation in social activities after the SSEAYP is highly encouraged. (2) Group Themes The Discussion Program shall follow the common theme and under it are eight (8) “group themes”.

Each discussion group shall comprise of more or less the same number of PYs

from different contingents. a

3. Proceedings (1) General The PYs shall be divided into eight (8) discussion groups according to their preferred group themes prior to embarkation.

After concluding the Discussion Program, the PYs shall then proceed with the Post-Program Sessions, where there will endeavor to convert the results of the discussions into implementable collaborative projects.

4. Focus of Group Themes (1) Cross-Cultural Understanding Discuss what youths can do to enhance and promote cross-cultural understanding toward establishing a caring and sharing global society. (2) Environment Discuss what we can do to develop environmentally friendly and sustainable society. (3) Food Culture / Food and Nutrition Education Discuss what we can do to actualize sound dietary life throughout the lifetime, by discussing traditional food culture, agriculture and food supply in each country. (4) International Relations Discuss the current and possible future partnerships between ASEAN and Japan under the age of globalization. (5) School Education Discuss what the PYs (as youth) can do to educate and encourage the school children to take active role in social activities in the local and global community. (6) Traditional Culture What is the value of traditional culture in modern society and how to pass it on to our future generations? (7) Volunteer Activities Discuss what we can do to encourage active participation of the youth in community-based volunteer activities. (8) Youth Development Discuss what we can explore on PYs leadership skills required in initiating youth development activities in the community.
