HOMAGE TO THE WARRIORS OF INDEPENDENCE

c rti

Joshy Xavier

A nnual Independence day celebration on August 15

make the people all along India happy. Let us remember, those who had led us to the world of independence from the chain of colonial dominance, with respect. And let us remember the brave soldiers who strain day and night in the boundaries to protect our independence and also those who had mortgaged their lives to protect law and order in our country. We have to pay them tribute through sincere, energetic and truthful national building activities. th

Many are those who fought bravely to death against the greedy land hunters of the French, Dutch, Portugal and the British in air, water and on land. We are obliged to a lot of patriots injured and died in battles led by Kings from 1498 to 1857.Let us gratefully remember those many well known and unknown people who suffered a lot in connection with war for liberty. Let the future generations not forget that there had been thousands to suffer for what they enjoy! We can be proud that the U.N. has recognised Ghandiji, the prophet of Non-violence and Satyagraha as the messenger of peace. The warriors and armed soldiers who fought for their motherland also have an equivalent position and share in the war for independence. Let us not forget those patriots’ sacrifices. Let every child of mother India enjoy the fruits of independence. We will work for that. And that is the best homage we can pay for them.

FOOD SCARCITY David Paul

n age has born such that even developed countries experienced food scarcity. About 40% of the land once cultivated has turned to fallow land is the main challenge that we face. Over population, climatic changes, unavailability of skilled workers, comparatively unprofitable market rates, scarce availability of bio-fertilizers and many more such factors account for the present food scarcity. It is really painful that ignoble attempts are taken place even at international level to make this problem political and a way for racial abuse. Campaigns are to be introduced to increase production through scientific and technological methods, making agriculture a profitable work. Team work of wise men to find out technological methods for the utmost utilisation of solar power, instead of changing crop types, to save fuel, convincing the people the necessity of population control etc,.. are to be implemented and steps should be taken at international level to propagate scientific methods to eliminate wastage and reduce the rate of consumption. It is for the healthy body, health to work, body growth and to live that we take food. It is a fact that over eating causes diseases. A culture is to be born in which every one knows that the decency is in taking only that much which is necessary and wastage of food is a crime. Relentless and determined hard work is the way to success. Let us hope that the problem of food scarcity also will become irrelevant before the hard work and noble determination of man kind. To produce 1 Kg of non-vegetarian food, at least 2 Kg of vegetarian food is used by the meat giving animal. So controlling excessive use of non-vegetarian food is also a method to meet the problem of food scarcity. Let deaths due to starvations not take place in under developed countries. Take it as a common problem of man kind, irrespective of science and technology have been working hard for a second green revolution. May they be able to save us from the call of appetite.

SARVA SIKSHA ABHIYAN - A STUDY Anitha T. S.

e can see the name boards with letters ‘Sarva Siksha Abhiman’ in front of Govt. and semi Govt. schools through out India. The project also known as SSA, aims at giving qualitative education for all students in India. SSA is an expedition to give education to all. SSA play a crucial role in fighting against the dropping out of children belonging to SC/ST and economically backward families. Even in the last year more than quarter of a lakh of students had dropped out form our schools. Most of them had to leave schools due to severe economic problems. With respect to other states of India, Kerala has the least number of dropped out students. There is considerable decrease in the number of dropped out after the implementation of SSA. Education becomes a subject in concurrent list through the 42nd constitutional amendment (1976). It took away the monopoly of state Govts. In the field of school education. CBSE schools to come into existence in different parts of the country as a result of the 86 nd amendment (2002) are a great footstep in the history of India. It was by this amendment the nation became obliged to give free and compulsory education to all belonging to the age group of 6 to 14. Education up to primary level has become a fundamental right for the children, the future generation of our nation. Implementation of value added qualitative education is the main feature of SSA. Child entered educational system was implemented in place of the old teaching method. No doubt that as per rules, the new method is really good. But the implementation methods prepared by our educationalists are not fault free. Methods are to be made better and implemented. A useful, scientific educational system without political influence has to be implemented through SSA. Obstacles are to be removed from the noble path of education.

TEACHERS AND SCHOOL STAFF LACKING OBSOLUTE JUSTICE Joshy Xavier

housands of teachers working in unaided school zone live a life of disappopintment and are destined to suffer the pain of poverty. Teachers working in unaided zone are submitted to the exploitation our civilised society. It is quite natural for the managements to have their own economic problems due the competition caused by the ever increasing number of schools. But all of its financial strain is imposed on the employees. Teachers are forced to work at a very low wage. Plenty of them are available at a poor cost since the numbers of educationally trained teachers have been increasing excessively every year. For the hard working and highly educated school teachers service and wage rules has become mere generosity of the management. Even some popular schools give average daily wage which is a poor amount not enough just for a two time meals. Our society has become a silent witness of the cruel play of the trusts and society made by some organisations working on behalf of human justice and heaven. Men to teach the language of love are walking through the path of exploitation. The standards of living of the majority of the unaided school teachers is below the poverty line and are unable to give their own children proper food or education fees. The teachers face which is to be kept pleased, now bear the sorrow September October ‘08

Nature and Hopes of disappointment. Only those who have sensible personality can mould a creative society. How can such a society of teachers who are disappointed and in helplessness mould a creative society? If we want a creative society in future, we should pleaed the teachers (guru’s). Since the lack of absolute justice of those employees has been crossing the society, it is surely a social problem. The society also has the obligation to confirm the availability of absolute justice. Become a participant in this moral war for justice – justice for unaided school teachers and non teaching staffs - practical suggestions invited – write them to the editor. Not only the management and Govt. but also parents and old students must do everything they can, for the rescue of this section. Our legislatives can do crucial role in providing absolute justice. Comments and suggestions are welcome.

SURRENDER TO GOD AND LOVE EVERY BODY Pathrose P.V.

A ll the religions and great men teach us to love God and love every body.

We Should love God without any hindrance and so we should surrender ourselves to God. At the same time we are obliged to love all other persons and every living things in the world.

Love has two faces. One side is divine love and the other side is selfish love. All the mothers – not only human beings, but also all animals, birds, fishes etc.- do love their offsprings. The parents give their maximum ability to feed and protect the young ones. All the generations repeat this holy affection of divine love. But when the child becomes matured, the parent let them live separately. We human beings keep respect and love, even if we are separated from the parents. We love our brothers, sisters and also other related persons. But in a larger sense, we are also to be ready to love all the persons in the world, even if it is very difficult and sometimes dangerous. We should love our creator God always and should obey the orders of the God. We should be ever happy to praise the God always for the unlimited grace and mercy showered up on us. We should always keep in mind that it is not our own merit we live, but the personal love of our creator which paves the way for our good life. God will give us the power to parden others errors, defects and sins etc, which made problems and untold miseries to us. We should be very particular to believe that nothing will be happened to us without the consent and knowledge of the God. Hence we should never scold others blindly for their sins which created us problems. At each and every moment, we should depend only up on God for our well being. Being human beings we may do unholy things due to temptations. Instead of Holy Spirit, sometimes we may be surrendered to evil spirits, so we should check ourselves to find out the fact that am I a divine lover? For an easy study, we can depend up on the following check list, every day. September October ‘08

Importance of Political Parties in India

le tic r A

P

V. K. Kesavan

olitical parties play a significant role in the proper functioning of a democracy. In theory, democracy is a form of government in which the country is run by representatives of the people. This is done in two stages. At the first stage the people elect their representatives by voting. At the second stage these elected representatives form a government which work in cooperation with the legislature. At both these stages, however, political parties play an important role. Whenever we think of elections, we think of parties. Election is not only a contest between the candidates but between the political parties as well. Parties nominate the candidates and organise the election campaigns. When the campaign goes on in a constituencey, it is not only the candidates who organise and speak at meetings but also important leaders from their parties come and campaign for them. In these elections the party cadidates are elected to the legislature. As you know, a single party getting the majority or a combination of parties form the government and others sit as the opposition in the house. Further the leader of the party or the concensus leader of the combination of parties become the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister, in the centre and the state respectively. In case the ruling government loses its confidence in the house, the leader of another party, which can prove its majority, may be asked to form the government. So you see that at every stage, the political parties are required to play a very important role in a democratic form of government. Political Parties have many important functions in a democracy. They help to express Public opinion. If people do not like a particular policy of the ruling party or the government, the opposition parties will take it up and agitate in various ways. Sometimes parties campaign and make people aware of what would happen if a particular policy is taken up. They thus have a peculiar two-way relation with public opinion. They are both the causes and the effects of it. Of course, no single party reflects the opinion of the whole society, as a result of which more than one party come into existence. OL YMPIC OLYMPIC YMPICss AND SCIENCE Krishnankutty C. T.

his time our neighbours really celebrated Olympics. Their determination got congrats and respect of the whole world. We are certainly happy to give them hearty congratulation? Indeed, we feel a little ashamed when we compare our medal rate with them. Terribly pathetic that our COUNTRY OF HOCKEY can’t even participate in the Olympics game. It’s wonderful that we feel Olympics as a national mourning event on every 4 year even after the six decades of our independence. In fact it is the lack of determination and the misuse of power on the part of political leadership have brought us to such a situation. When we will able to get determined to bring participants in the international standards by giving them proper training? Here, there are more things that make our country a matter of insult before the international front. The Chinese are draining out our national wealth out by introducing a lot of machines, instruments and utilities like flowervases etc. which attract modern consumers. They make use of their knowledge of science and technology to exploite India as a good market. Even before centuries India had been better than any other country in the fields of science, technology, art and literature. Even though, for an argument, we can say that the colonial dominance obstructed the path of our progress in science and technology. We have to agree to the fact that independent India hasn’t got enough progress in this field. Why!? We have no desire to become inventors It’s really a matter of proud that some individuals and institutions such as ISRO have made outstanding contributions in the field of science and technology. How far a small nation like Japan has gone ahead in this field after the second world war!! We are far rich enough with natural and human resources. So we, better have to see our backwardness in science and technology as a challenge, rather than crying over our Olympics medal rate.

OUR FORESTS AND WILD LIFE

orests are very helpful to us as they provide many things as timber, fuel, resin, wood pulp, honey, gum, grasses, herbs, medicinal properties, flowers, fruits etc. Beside these, forests help us in conserving soil. They check soil erosion and cause more rainfall. They make climate more cool and pleasant. The forests freshen up the air and help to make it clean. The wild animals are living in the forests. Forests are the beginning place of the streams and rivers. Tourism is developed as a big industry and the forests play a great role in our economy, as the forests attract the tourists from far and near. We should not cut down forests, as we get many useful and valuable things from them. The wild animals and birds can not live successfully if there is no forest. Vanamahotsav is one of social forestry movements. It is celebrated at the beginning of the rainy season. Vanamahotsav is celebrated because trees are very important not only to human beings but also to wild life. Social Forestry is a movement which encourages planting of trees in villages and towns, along road sides, railway lines, canals etc. Evergreen forests are found in the hot and rainy mountain areas. The trees do not shed their leaves at no particular time and thus remain green all round the year. Rose wood and Mahagany are examples for this type of trees. Leaves shedding forests are found in the foot hills of Himalayas etc. The trees shed their leaves towards the beginning of the summer, Teak, Sal, Sesame, Rubber trees are examples for this type of trees. Nature and Hopes The area where trees grow very close to one another and over a large area is called a forest. Trees, shrubs, creepers, grasses which grow on their own are the gifts of nature and known as Natural Vegetation.

2 THE MEETING OF THE LION AND BULL KINGS The meeting of the Lion and Bull Kings was a hostoric event. It was most dignified. As the bull entered, the lion rose from his thorne. Each stood for a moment admiring the other. The bull took a step forward. The lion took a step forward. The bull took another step forward. The lion did the same. And slowly, each approached nearer and nearer to the other with grave stately movements. Then they both bowed deeply, and embraced as friends. That, at least, was what it looked like to the members of the court. To jasment and his friend, who could guess what was going on in the minds of the two, it looked very different. Despite all their wisdom and training in court manners, they had to turn away many times to hide their laughter. The truth was that the lion and the bull were terrified of one another. As the bull entered, he glanced quickly at the huge lion with its wild mane, its large teeth and steely claws and intstantly froze with fear. The lion, for his part seeing the powerfull bull, its horns, great glittering spikes almost reaching the ceiling, stood awed and unable to move. It was fear of punishment that made the bull take the first step forward- although he very much wished it could have been in the opposite direction.....

Nature and Hopes also the caves where they sheltered from the midday sun. But he was nowhere to be found. His brothers had not seen him, nor had anyone else. For all had gone to bed at sunset and slept soundly until dawn. But if anyone had remained awake during the night they would have seen a young, almost fully grown wolf steal out of a cave after midnight and make his silent, careful way to another part of the forest. It was a part which on every moonlight night could be heard a call, a loud sharp call which was made with the head uplifted and the eyes raised towards the moon. It was that part of the forest inhabited solely by wolves, and where few other animals ever chose to live.

4 SWADESHI SCIENCE MOVEMENT India has a rich tradition in science and technology. Here, physical and spiritual sciences were complimentary. Our forefathers were well aware of the fusion of mind and matter. Intuition was a significant component of our scientific development. It was this component that some western scientists like R.Feynman described as the ‘ Indian way of doing research’. This approach has been the foundation of all branches of Indian systems of knowledge like Ayurveda, Yogavidya, Vasthuvidya, Vaimanikasastra, Jyothi sastra etc. The concept of ‘ Swadeshi Science’ is not a dogma, but a dynamic, holistic approach to evolve a policy framework for national development with readiness to adopt, adapt and assimilate the best from every where. Swadeshi Science Movement has the main objective of integrating our ancient wisdom with modern scientific advancements. Started in 1991, the SSM has progressed significantly in achieving it’s objectives. These are today recognized at the national level. SSM has a dedicated group of eminent scientists and technocrats September October ‘08

Kitchen Garden on Terrace Abdul Azeez

T he presence of insecticides in vegetables is irritating as their rise in price.

It is quite natural to have such poisons in vegetables which come from a zone where agriculture has become a business. The consumption of such vegetables produce mental as well as physical problems. This many times discussed subject is relevant here because of two reasons. The first is to produce the maximum quantity of vegetables. Sell them profitable in market and thereby to exploit their rise in price due to the rise in price of petroleum. And the second is to enjoy the healthy and tasty vegetable produced through bio-agriculture. It is known that we can make a lot of "currys'' using papaya. It is very simple to plant different types of papaya plants in our courtyard and near by area. Planting Brysnia Grandis (Koval), giving them bio wastes of houses as manual and irrigating them using waste water from wash basins and bath tubs make them ever green easy and convenient even for city folks. Two types of farming can be done on terrace. The first type is the method to plant Amarsnthus (Cheera), ladies finger, chilly, peas ets,., No need to use large quantity of soil. It protect us from the disturbance of hot roof due to burning sun. THE MAGIC OF BRYSNIA GRANDIS (KOVAL) Koval gives us the convenience of planting in courtyard and growing on terrace. Just plant 4 koval in any 4 convenient places around the house. Lead their vine to the terrace. Let them spread in the terrace pandal. A decoration to house, protection from heat of the sun, money to spend to buy koval is profit. A food without insecticide and the availability of more tasy food as bio-agricultural product are the benefits. Give koval the bio-wastes of the house as manure, irrigate them using pipes having water from wash basins and bath tubs as source- and you get the aforesaid 5 benefits – absolutely free of cost; and the sixth one is the service of the world. Doing agriculture for the production of food is a blessed rite and an auspicious deed. How noble it is to produce one’s own food!!
