EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Title Organization Reporting Officer Faculty Guide Students Name

: Organization understanding : Watershed Organization Trust, Ahmadnagar : Mr. Harshvardhan Deshmukh and Mr. Anirudh Mirikar : Prof. Rakesh Saxena : Dipi Gupta and Manjeet Sahu

OBJECTIVES The objectives of the study included developing an understanding about the organization, operations and finance, its structure and strategies for growth. METHODOLOGY The organization has been studied from various perspectives- purpose, human resources, financial, activities, structure and its dimensions, culture, environment in which it operates etc. The primary sources of data collection were observations made during our stay in the organization and interaction with the employees. The secondary data sources comprised of the annual reports of the organization, various publications. MAJOR FINDINGS WOTR is an NGO registered under the Bombay Public Trust Act, 1950 and N.E. 476 as a support organization for village self help groups (VSHG). It was set up in 1993 to undertake developmental activities in resource- fragile rain-fed areas. It works as the Mother NGO in the Ahmadnagar district. Its mission determines the activities and thus the structure of the organization. The activities undertaken by it can be grouped under two levels. Level one consists of participatory developmental activities undertaken at the village level. It comprises of watershed programmes, formation of SHGs, micro-finance etc. Setting up of VWC, SHG provides a base for building strong village level institutions. Level two activities consists of the training programmes organized by it for partner NGOs. It helps in their capacity building to undertake similar activities. It has a separate micro-finance wing-Sampada Trust set up in 2002. it undertakes four basic activities: micro-finance, micro-enterprise, insurance and women empowerment. Learning by doing is a principle followed by WOTR. It believes that the best way of achieving development of the people is to involve them in every stage of the process. To achieve this, WOTR has developed several forms of participatory pedagogy that ensures maximum participation of the beneficiaries. The operation of WOTR is more in the form of a matrix structure. Formalization is low in the organization as the employees are given ample freedom to innovate and bring their own working style. WOTR works on the basis of decentralization. Horizontal differentiation is high due to functional departments. The organization structure is flat leading to low vertical differentiation. It has a high spatial differentiation as its operations are spread across the state of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.
