Uncreation & Re-Creation Ezekiel and Genesis -

Many points of contact between Ezekiel opening vision of the glory of God and opening chapters of Genesis • Ezekiel mighty wind storm - ruah •

Genesis windstorm recalls activity of God in creation where ruah hovered over waters. Also recreation of the earth after the flood •

Gen. 1:2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

Gen. 8:1 ¶ But God remembered Noah and all the beasts and all the livestock that were with him in the ark. And God made a wind blow over the earth, and the waters subsided.

Ezekiel centre of windstorm are living creatures (later id as cherubim) •

Ezek. 1:4 ¶ As I looked, behold, a stormy wind came out of the north, and a great cloud, with brightness around it, and fire flashing forth continually, and in the midst of the fire, as it were gleaming metal.

Ezek. 10:1 ¶ Then I looked, and behold, on the expanse that was over the heads of the cherubim there appeared above them something like a sapphire, in appearance like a throne.

awesome expanse over their heads

Ezek. 1:25 And there came a voice from above the expanse over their heads.

Genesis •

expanse

Gen. 1:6 And God said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters”

Together these references set the tone of the entire book as an account of uncreation – recreation

New Adam and Re-creation Recreation most evidence in the theological concept of the new adam • Ezekiel characteristically addressed as ben adam translated ‘son of man’ but literally means ‘son of Adam’ o Just as first adam received breath of life from God o

Gen. 2:7 then the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.

o So Ezekiel as son of Adam receives infusion of divine spirit o

Ezek. 2:2 And as he spoke to me, the Spirit entered into me and set

me on my feet, and I heard him speaking to me.

o Adam faced test of abstaining from eating what Lord prohibits Ezekiel faced test of eating whatever Lord commanded him o

Ezek. 2:8 “But you, son of man, hear what I say to you. Be not rebellious like that rebellious house; open your mouth and eat what I give you.”

o Adam eating brings death to many o Ezekiel eating equips him to bring life to many o

Ezek. 3:21 But if you warn the righteous person not to sin, and he does not sin, he shall surely live, because he took warning, and you will have delivered your soul.”

o Ezekiel as new Adam founder member of and first fruits of new community whose recreation from dry bones is theme of Ezk 37 (as per first creation) first forming raw material into bodies beings filled with breath resulting in life

Note of judgement in opening vision of Ezkiel vision of John on Patmos (Rev 1:20) o Blazing fire o Glowing bronze o Human figure surrounded by radiance o Noise of rushing waters God’s re-creative work widened in scope with the coming of the new son of man – JC o Second adam whose obedience undoes effects of Adams fall o Spirit rests on him and is poured out on church through him o Firstfruits and precursor or new community
