Osmotic Diuretics (e.g. Mannitol)
Acts mostly on Proximal Convoluted Tubule Unlike other diuretics, does not influence renin synthesis. Thus, it does not promote diuresis and natriuresis Oral: has a laxative effect and not absorbed IV: filtered in glomerulus but not reabsorbed in the renal tubules o Effects: increased osmotic pressure Excretion of isosmotic equivalent of water Increases blood flow by 30% Does not penetrate the eyes and brain, thus in an osmotic way, reduces intraocular and intracranial pressures o Treatment for Brain edema Acute and chronic renal failures Glaucoma Drug intoxication
