Oslo: Aker Kvaerner has today awarded DNV a contract to qualify the carbon capture technology which will be used in the Just CatchTM Bio Demo plant. Aker Kvaerner intends to build a CO2 capture demonstration plant in Norway linked to a gas-fired power plant. It will be based on Aker Kvaerner’s Just CatchTM technology, which is being developed together with twelve industrial partners in addition to Gassnova, a subsidiary of the Norwegian Ministry of Petroleum and Energy. The demonstration plant will have the capacity to clean 10% of the flue gas from a 420 MW power plant. It will be developed in two phases. Firstly, the Just CatchTM plant will be run using exhaust from the gas -fired power plant. Secondly, a bio plant providing steam will be fully integrated with the demo plant. The technology will therefore be designed to clean flue gas from natural gas fired and bio power plants, in addition to flue gases with CO2 concentrations similar to those from coal-fired plants. Vital to qualify the technology Aker Kvaerner is putting a lot of prestige into solving the CO2 challenges and needs to be certain that the technology works as planned with as low risk as possible. “By following the principles laid down in DNV’s recognised technology qualification process, we are identifying and monitoring all risk elements in a systematic manner. Aker Kvaerner believes that this qualification programme executed by DNV will build confidence in our technology and will be an important factor for commercial success, ” says Oscar Fr. Graff, Vice President of Gas Technology and Onshore Solutions in Aker Kvaerner. “DNV is providing an effective and rational approach to the demonstration programme by the systematic procedure laid down in DNV ’s recommended practice for technology qualification,” says Hans Axel Bratfos, the head of DNV Energy’s Cleaner Energy Department in Norway. “This contract fits well with our overall strategy in finding new and reliable technology solutions to combat climate change,” he points out. The systematic approach to the technology qualification process forces developers of new technology to focus on high -risk elements and on ways of preventing the identified high-risk failures. As a completely independent company, DNV will issue a Statement of Endorsement once the novel aspects of the Just CatchTM Bio Demo plant technology are documented as being feasible.
