HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF ‘DUAL’ Objectives: With this listening activity you’ll learn how to make the most of a TV (serial, sitcom etc.) with a bilingual broadcast (dual) at home and you’ll improve your listening skills. Before engaging in the task, think about the following questions: -Have you ever used ‘dual’ when watching TV? -If so, what was the experience like? -Did you ever think of all the different possibilities bilingual broadcast (‘dual’) has in order to improve your listening skills when learning English? -Try to think in the different ways one could make the most of ‘dual’, that is, is there anything else apart from the sound that could help you understand the film much better?
Task: Pick up a TV guide and choose a serial that has got a bilingual broadcast. Then programme your video recorder and record the program you’ve chosen. Afterwards follow the steps below: 1.-Watch the serial / sitcom once without sound. Bear in mind the following recommendations: -Look at what the characters do: their actions, body movements (head, arms, shoulders, legs), etc. What does this tell you about the story? -Look at their face- eyes, mouth, facial muscles. What does this tell you about their mood? -Think of a possible argument for the episode. What do you think might be happening? -Ask yourself the following questions: WHAT?- WHO?- WHERE?- WHEN?- HOW?- WHY?

2-Write down your answers to the questions above. 3.-Watch the serial / sitcom this time with sound using your notes. 4.-How much of the story did you get right? Next time you watch TV, pay attention to the visual information you see: it will help you understand a great deal of the story!
Suggestions: -You may want to pick up a ‘sitcom’ such as Friends, for most of them last for twenty minutes. There are many sitcoms in satellite channels. If you haven’t got satellite channel don’t worry. Pick up any serial or sitcom in TV3, C33 or TV2. You might also want to choose a serial / sitcom you’re familiar with. It’s going to be much easier for the better understanding of the episode.
