Open Source & Other Options Use Your Tech Dollars on Items Other Than Software Definitions Open Source:Open Source software can be distributed freely and users are free to make changes to the source code and modify the program as they please. FreeWare: Person/Company/Website distributes the software freely; however, ownership, copyright belongs to the owner and the source code cannot be modified. ShareWare: The idea of shareware is relatively simple -- try it before you buy it. Beta: Not ready for release, free as they are working out the kinks. Web Based Application: The software is available ONLY online.

Pros and Cons: PROS: Cost savings, stability, no forced upgrades, access, access to a skilled community of developers, new developments, and just the global collaboration is a benefit. CONS: Free does not always mean no cost (time and effort can be involved), it can cost money to migrate, change is hard, no warranties, licensing issues if you change code, resistance against a "NOT-NAME" software, IT reluctance.
