SAFFRON staff are aware of the need for propro-active services in the community to address the vulnerability of today’s youth, and the challenges they face in present society when dealing with issues of sexual violence. By creating strong, independent, and empowered young women, they will be able to withstand negative influences of sexual connotations and learn the skills necessary to make positive decisions for themselves and their future.
Preventing Sexual Violence
It is said that ONYX is the stone of endurance and guides positive decision making in challenging times. This reflects the goals of the ONYX program: to empower young women to learn how to be assertive and set healthy relationship boundaries as they are bombarded daily with mixed messages through media, music, and print.

The participants will share experiences about their relationships with family and friends, and will learn appropriate skills to make new friends. This will be helpful to those youth who have had experienced abusive or hurtful relationships. Many young women use bullying or peer pressure to intimidate soso-called friends into doing what they want. This is discussed in the group, to help participants deal with the pressures of friendship.

Seeing as the ONYX program touches on some sensitive issues for young women, SAFFRON has made sure that a Youth Therapist is available to all participants in need of short term intervention. This therapist can appropriately decide on a course of action after seeing the young woman, and can adequately refer to an appropriate service within the community. Five sessions are available to the girls, free of charge for those who require additional support.
The participants will learn and teach one another different healthy methods and skills for dealing with anger, stress and other emotions. They will learn how to recognize the signs their bodies reveal when feeling these emotions, and how to apply the coping skills that they will learn.
