The other half of grain storage should be other grains, legumes, pastas, potatoes Milk: bakery tested (non-instant) powdered dry milk, double amount for instant milk Powdered milk is the most expensive item on the list so if you need to economize you will want to base the amount you need by the amount you use rather than the amount listed above(ie = if your family drinks 1 gal of milk per week you will need 5 pounds of milk per month x 12 = 72 pounds per year; 2 gals/week = 144 pounds/year; 3 gals/week = 288 pounds/year, etc.) Sweetners: jam, jelly, sugar, honey, hard candy. 1 c. honey=11 oz; 1 c. jam=10 oz; 1 c. sugar= 7 oz Fats: should be stored at the ratio; 1 pound margarine to 2 pounds shortening to 4 pounds oil (57 fluid oz) Dehydrated carrots: #10 can=2.8 lbs; = 12 c/can; 1 c dehydrated=2 c fresh Vitamin C Tablets: 2 lbs of alfalfa seed per person can be substituted for tablets, but should be rotated every year Water: 5.5 gallons per person, drinking only; 14 gallons drinking and washing Salt: 5 lbs per person per year Levenings: 1 lb per person per year; baking powder, baking soda, yeast This is a long term storage program that provides the amount of food needed to provide the daily calories listed and all the daily recommended allowances needed for a well-balanced diet for one year. It is the least expensive, requires the least amount of storage, but the most preparation of any storage plan. In order to add variety in the daily diet and make foods palatable it is important to learn the skills needed to prepare items on the

list. Do not store items that you don't know how to use and will not rotate. The amounts listed above do not take into consideration other foods that you might have on hand; such as, freezer foods, canned goods or dehydrated units.
