One Day to Remember Forever “Five, four, three two one, THAT'S IT WE'RE LEAVING YOU!” I hear as I sprint down the green grass towards the pier where my brother stands yelling at me. My cousins are all laughing as they shove each other, trying to get a good seat on the boat. I rush down the pier as my brother starts to drive the boat away, but I am making it on that boat, I think. I love watching the firework shows, so there is no way I am going to miss a firework show on the 4th of July. I quickly hop onto the boat as I reach the end of the pier, landing on one of my many, many cousins. Now you may be thinking, what kind of adults let 14 children leave on a boat without any adult supervision? While usually my parents would never even think of letting us all leave on a boat together, this is the one day of the year where my parents say, “WHAT THE HECK!” The 4th of July is a big holiday for many people, but in my family, it is celebrated like every other day of the year is a Monday. Every year for as long as I can remember, we have celebrated the 4th of July at Green Lake. We still do even after moving from Wisconsin to North Carolina. We all love the lake, so we start the day by going tubing and having jet ski races. Then we have a large grill out and eat together at picnic tables as we talk. But, the real fun begins once the sun sets. All the kids huddle around the campfire as we make smores. While we make the

[Last Name] 2 smores the adults set up our “movie theater.” Sheets would be splayed out on the ground with pillows and blankets thrown on top, as a movie was being projected onto the side of a barn. Can you tell that we lived in Wisconsin? Our movies were projected onto the side of a barn.... The boat cut smoothly through the glass like water, as the stars reflection bounced off it. We were all snuggled up under blankets to protect us from the crisp breeze that blew across the lake. Eventually we came to the meeting place. Hundreds of boats all squeezed together as their lights bounced off the water. Everyone excited to watch the amazing firework show that Green Lake puts on every year. I grabbed my food from the large bag next to me, and got ready to watch the amazing show. I clapped and hollered as the finale started. The sky exploded with colors as they collided and shone across the night sky. Once it ended, all the boats then started to leave, one by one going back to their house to celebrate the rest of the night. My brother turned the boat and started driving back towards the house. However, tonight we all decided to stay out a little longer. We cruised down the shoreline while my cousins got music playing through the boat, then the screeching started. My family is not made up of singers. “I’M SEXY AND I KNOW IT” “I am such a stud muffin” “You want a piece of this ladies?” I roll my eyes as my cousins start screaming song lyrics and dancing all over the boat. They are crazy people, but they are my crazy family I think as I join in. In this moment as we all let loose. We enjoy one another's presence and have a good time. Watching my family, a content feeling comes upon me. I love my cousins. But the feeling that I have now the warm and bright

[Last Name] 3 light that I seem to feel within me. It is not one I can explain. In this very moment I know that this is a memory I will remember and treasure for as long as I am able. And I have. Still, to this day, I recall the feeling I had watching my family. I still cannot put it into precise words. But I remember the feeling. I keep the memory of it to remind me why I work hard. I want to make more memories like that with my loved ones. I know that this memory can never be replicated because times have changed. My brother and cousins are now in college, my family has moved away, and our lives overall have changed. However, this is what makes this memory so valuable to me. The lower the quantity, the higher the value. This memory with my family has taught me to treasure the time that I have. To treasure being 15. To treasure being a sophomore. To treasure simply being a kid. Once today is over I can never go back, so I have to make today worthy of being remembered and treasured. I keep this memory in my heart of the good times that have past, and the excitement for the new ones to come.
