On the trail of Dr Heim: MIS Spinal Conference in Gramado, S Brasil (August 2008)

Dr Heim, aged 94, is still hiding in Patagonia, a large nature expanse in the southern parts of Chile, Argentina and close to the S of Brasil.This brute was worse than Dr Mengele( who passed out his final days in Rio).These two who created hell-on-earth for their Jewish captives, ended/are ending theirs in paradise.Heim kept a log of his work at a concentration camp,Mauthausen, where he operated without anesthetic, to study pain responses, injected prisoners with petrol and tortured many. He then worked in Baden-Baden, until 1962 (ref: BBC, 9/7/08) The S of Brasil was built by Italian and German migrants, joined later by fascists on the run post WW2. Many of these young Italian fascist soldiers shell-shocked by the atrocities they were asked to perpetrate. It is also the home to the Gauche, those fiercely proud and independent Brazilian cowboys who run and own all the ranches producing the great beef of S Brasil and Argentina. Argentina, my brain still reverberates with the passions and dance of Buenos Aires. BA is the best kept secret, so go take that 28 hr flight From Sydney (it may be quicker to goto the moon but BA will take you closer to paradise). No superlative can capture this wondrous city. That city where they dance the tango on the streets and any hot blood would give his ..lls for a life of nights with one of those passionate Argentinean ladies. Pale, tall, immaculately dressed, with black hair, strutting the streets of the city. But Argentineans look sad, who wouldn’t be, being a proud, clever, sophisticated, beautiful race of people, swindled out of their past by their stupid and brutal generals (Desaparecidos. under the Military Junta, 1976-83; 30,000 people “disappeared”) and nearly out of their future by Harvard hucksters (clever young things, fresh back with their MBA from Harvard who run up the foreign debt). The history of Argentina is big events (read Revolutions); (leading to) too many big mistakes. Between 1930-1975 there were 30 military coups (contrast Australia=none. where not one drop of blood shed in the name of independence/revolution)

Tango on the streets Consuming flesh on the streets and at the table; Argentineans are big meat eaters.

Evita now best remembered in La Boca, old neighbourhood, which once seceded in 1882.Alot of nice girls there.

From the same streets where they still dance the tango; 30,000 Young people and intellectuals were butchered/murdered 1976-1983 (They say “disappeared”). Porto Alegre, capital of the S of Brasil. Great book stores- mainly in Portuguese. Planet Earth said there was nothing to see there, probably right, but again good steaks and the Gauche. Wonderful welcoming people.

I really did attend the conference. Opening talk so long, the distinguished speaker took a pee break half way through. Place looked and felt like a ski resort.
