Oedipus Rex Project (30 points) Due Thursday 4/19 Option One: Opinion Paper Choose a tragic hero from history or from literature who was in a position of civic leadership and committed an immoral act that led to his or her downfall. Write an opinion paper about whether such a person should be held to a higher or lower standard that the rest of the people. What punishment did they face? What is appropriate punishment for such actions? Should we expect people in power to be “better people” than those over whom they rule? Note: This paper is a semi-formal paper. Imagine that your opinion would be published on an online magazine or website like Buzzfeed. It should be no longer than 2 pages long: do not exceed the second page. Option Two: Tragic Poem Write a poem (30+ lines) that recounts some tragedy. Use both anagnorisis and peripeteia as tools to tell your tragic story. Consider using form to mimic the form of a tragic play. Option Three: Chorus Choreography Write the stage directions for one of the choral odes in Oedipus Rex. For this option, you may submit a written transcript of the stage directions -or- you may submit a video of the choral ode performed. You may work with a partner or a small group of students to pursue the video option. Option Four: Essay Write a formal essay (3-4 pages) that compares two (tragic) heros that we have read about this year. As always, make sure to use evidence from the texts that you are writing about and follow proper MLA formatting guidelines. Alternatively, you may write a more formal, analytical paper responding to the Opinion Paper prompt.
