Can you believe it’s October! We had a great September. The children are making new friends. They are kind and helpful to each other. Bear World was terrific! We saw lots of bears. The Petting Zoo was another favorite, not to mention the rides! A special ‘Thank you’ to parents who were able to come with us. THANK YOU for reading each night with your child! When your child needs to sound out a word or misses a word in a sentence, help with the word. Then have him/her re-read the sentence again. Night reading should be more on the easier side than too hard. Please call me if there are any questions or concerns. Math: We have two more chapters of addition, and then we will start subtraction. Also, your child works on math skills at his or her level each day at the computer. We will start memorizing addition facts. We will have daily timings to help us get lots of practice. The goal for 1st grade is mastery addition and subtraction facts to 10. If your child has difficulty passing a certain fact off, I will send home a practice page of that fact so they can practice. Writing: We’ve had a great start on Writing Workshop. The children are choosing their own topics. We had our first writing celebration last week. At the end of each unit, the children will choose one story they have written to revise, edit, publish, (on a first grade level) and share at our celebration. We will have refreshments and celebrate being “Authors!” Next the children will be writing about “small moments” from their lives. These stories will be treasures for sure!
We will also do several fun writing activities about Fall and Halloween. Social Studies/ Science: Oceans Columbus Science Centers For October Skeletons (we will learn about our bones then make a fun skeleton out of Q-tips and noodles) Bats Spiders Owls Have a great October, Mrs. Nicholes
