Indentured Servant
Someone who traded their passage from Europe for several years of labor Indentured servants were white They were sometimes treated like slaves
Jamestown
One of the first English colonies in the new world Pocahontas and John Smith were real, and were connected to Jamestown
Arrival of first Africans to Virginia Colony
The ship's cargo hold is empty except for twenty or so Africans whom the captain and his crew have recently robbed from a Spanish ship. The captain exchanges the Africans for food, then sets sail. It's not clear if the Africans are considered slaves or indentured servants. 1619
The Pilgrims
Landed in 1620 Africans were in America before the Pilgrims! (That is Plymouth Rock. It’s not that big)
Disadvantages to Indentured Servants:
Eventually they become free people and must be given land If they are mistreated they can run away and hide rather easily
Disadvantage to enslaving Native Americans:
They died in large numbers from European Diseases They could easily run away Some Native Americans were enslaved anyway
African slaves Healthy Strong Skilled Cannot run away easily Available for sale
