imagine a new sharm

Our imagination can be our deadliest enemy, or, our window of hope. In this instance I will refer to our imagination, and what we imagine, as our window of hope. Whether it turns into a reality, or remains merely a vision will only depend on the nature of Sharmers during the next decade, at a start. Do you ever imagine what Sharm would, and could be like, other than it already is? I’m sure most of you have. Well, at least once or twice thought: if only that could….. what if this was…..why isn’t it like that….? And so on. Well, that is just life for you. It’s your ego wanting more, or less for that matter.

There are several places around the world that are untouched and spoiled by the greed and ambition of today, is it possible for Sharm to become one of them? It certainly has the setting for it. Could Sharm ever become a sanctuary of international peace, where cultures of the world come together as one? I mean if you really think about it – isn’t that what it really is; a beautiful city that people from all over choose as home. I mean, no one really is from Sharm (except the Bedouins). We are all people that have chosen to settle here; we are Sharm settlers. Now – if we all moved away from what we had, and choose to settle in nature, as they say, wouldn’t that mean that the social dynamics found in Sharm should be very different? Shouldn’t it mean that the social nature found here is meant to be; pure, free, liberating, non-judgmental, devoid of jealousy, regret, anger

and deceit. Well guess what, such places do exist; places that are pure and simple. They are called Commune’s around the world, and the largest of them being the Kibbutz. The kibbutz is a community of people who chose to give up everything for a more spiritual lifestyle. At the kibbutz, materialistic obsession doesn’t exist; there they live off the land, and learn to work for what they want. Everyone has a part and role to play. Interestingly enough, and to my surprise, we found several Sharmer’s that have taken that path. Here is what they had to say: “I spent about three – four years on the kibbutz and absolutely loved it! If I could, I would go back…” – Declared Anne, a mother of two. “Being at the kibbutz was the best experience and time in my entire life; I learnt so much there and think that it would do everyone good to spend some time of their life at the kibbutz.” – Revealed, Mary, a local Sharmer. Well, why does it have to be somewhere we go? Why can’t Sharm be like that? Why is it that we complicate an otherwise simple life? That is beyond me… Sharm is a virgin land where it is our duty, as the settlers, to cultivate and nourish it, whether by building things, agriculture or implementing new rules, principles and traditions. We are what we make it to be, and it is us who should make the desert bloom, creating a new earth; free from all the nonsense we see and know around the world. Sharm has so much potential that isn’t utilized to its greatest advantage. If we could wipe it clean, and start on a fresh plain canvas; to take a paintbrush and let ourselves go, what wonderful pictures we would paint. Well guess what? It’s never too late. Just do it. Get out there and do something for yourself. So , going back to imagination, imagine Sharm if…. We used solar energy. We would not have the constant power cuts we usually do, and our bills would cost a lot less. Most importantly, we will be using a natural resource that Sharm has plenty of, for something other than tanning. We purify more sea water right here. Even in the desert heaven, we would have plenty of water and it would be a lot cheaper than transporting it all the way from El Tor or even further still. We live in peace, and by peace, I mean inner peace. Imagine what it would be like to live free of racial and social prejudice. It can happen, it happened in Malaysia very well! If everyone stops believing that “their” way is the right or the better way – imagine all the peace there would be flowing in the air. Imagine all that good karma. Bicycles were the main means of transport. With 9 months of perfect weather, and small distances in Sharm, why are people so persistent on using cars. Most of you are expats; back home you walk, cycle or take the tube to move around. Why in Sharm, does the need for a car suddenly emerge? How come in Amsterdam it seems to work so well? Imagine a place where you can walk down the streets without people harassing you, where you can show your true emotions without fear, apprehension or guilt. A place where everyone acts like one big family without the complication of the modern lifestyles; go back to when Sharm was pure, simple and a lot less complicated. Every place is made by its people. Give it a thought and let us know what you come up with, by emailing [email protected]

Sharm’s Bottom Line What is the bottom line?

You have to focus on what you want to do, and just do it. If you stop to think about what everyone else is saying and feeling, then you will never do anything. It is good to be sensitive to the needs and feelings of others, but not at your own cost, as that would classify as people-pleasing which we discussed in a previous issue. The bottom line is a general term used in our day-to-day dialogue, and is the sum up of everything. You know how on a financial statement from your bank, you eyes roll down to the bottom line that shows your net income. Well, yeah, obviously that is the bottom line. As they say in Arabic “hat min elakher’ i.e. what’s the bottom line? Stop beating about the bush, (which is very common here). Say what it is you want, and go get it.

So, what is the bottom line in Sharm? “The bottom line is when I have had enough and say stop, and really mean it.” – Declared Anne, a local resident. “I haven’t found my bottom line yet; I seem to be able to just keep going on and on and on. I know it is going to come crashing down one day but I will face that when it comes to it.” – Confessed Mark, a local diver. “The bottom line to me, is the make or break of a situation,” – defined Hesham, a local business owner. “It is the conclusion, the last word, the final straw. In other words what is it that we really want or need?” – He added. “The bottom line is that this is the way things are, and it will be very hard to change anything, so you will have to learn to adapt.” – Observed Adam, a new Sharmer.

!

“I love the bottom line, as I hate all the B.S that goes on; it just goes in one ear and out the other.” – Said Pete, a local shop assistant. Also, what goes hand in hand with the bottom line is the power of now…just live for the moment.; this precise moment. Your past is what made you and got you where you are now, be thankful for it and your future in what lies ahead of you, look forward to it, but never remain living in the past or the future. The bottom line is Now. What do I want Now. Not yesterday, not tomorrow, not in a week. Now. ‘Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift that is why it is called present’ – as the wise man once said. Well, treat it so and act upon the power of now. Ask yourself, what is it you want. Deep down inside, what is your bottom line. Why are you in Sharm. Figure it out and go out and do it. If more people started to do that – life would be a lot more progressive. So, whether it is the power of now or looking for the bottom line, just do it Sharmers, you will feel life is a lot easier and you will be a lot happier. And as we all know, the more people are happier, the better the karma in the air is. Got something to say? Email [email protected]

Join In For A Clean Sharm

Unfortunately the summer did not bring any improvement on the garbage front, on the contrary. The number of rubbish boxes declined, as did the number of garbage collectors. But on the positive side that let recently to another change in the management of SES, and we heard that since the this process started to reverse. However the sorry state of our streets (not to mention the former beautiful desert surroundings) can be just a warning to residents not to give up in the efforts for a cleaner Sharm. That will need the help of all Sharmers - get up and join! Join in Clean Sharm and try to make a change. One can complain and sit back, and one can take things in ones hand. Luckily there have always been Sharmers working quietly and unnoticed in their own special way for a better life for all of us. However, working as a group will give us a chance to be heard and reach higher goals. For a beautiful clean and environmental friendly city we need: • A functional waste management system (timely collection of garbage, recycling and a well fenced-off sanitary landfill for non recyclable waste) • Enforcement of the environmental law in order to stop illegal dumping • Awareness about the danger of plastic (bags and bottles!) for our environment in general, and for the future of tourism in particular Clean Sharm has several task forces. On the forefront Clean-Ups are organized by the Clean Up group, to set an example and raise awareness. Of course clean-ups have only a small and temporary impact, but are a perfect occasion to attract attention, inform people and make a positive contribution. The EDU group promotes a change of attitude to garbage disposal with the famous motto: Reduce, re-use, recycle! Indeed, if you care about this area, do realize that your own behavior makes a difference! Set the right example and put your garbage in the containers. Use your own durable shopping bags, watch/reduce your water consumption and limit the use of plastic bottles. Last but not least there is the Core group, which works quietly behind the scenes, together with relevant authorities and organizations to address the above and more priorities.

Maybe we don’t need to go Green, but we definitely want to go CLEAN! Join Clean Sharm: join the regular Clean Ups, join us in our Facebook group ‘Clean Sharm’, subscribe to the regular newsletter (just write a short note to [email protected])

Dear Editor,

I have just started working in a new company and love it so far. All the people are really nice and friendly. I think that it is so important to feel welcomed and relaxed at work and as if it is one big family; that is what team work is all about.

I decided to have something to eat as I waited for them to return. I went and bought a sandwich and a coca cola. While I was eating, I started talking to the man I had met earlier; he seemed a very nice person. As we were getting to know each other better, I really started to admire him. He told me a story about his family that he had lost several years ago, the pain in his eyes was so vivid, as if it had happened only yesterday.

When the atmosphere and vibe is friendly, then the results are more productive and beneficial. At the end of the day, the company’s interest is our main concern and goal. I just wanted to share how at home and comfortable I feel here, as it is all so new to me. Thank you. Best regards, Zoe

Dear Zoe, Congratulations on your new job; that’s great news that you are enjoying it! Team work and friendly atmosphere are so important when working with other people. So, good for you that is the right attitude to have when starting somewhere new. I’m sure it will turn out great for you. Well, keep up the good work and enjoy your new job, Sincerely, The Editor

Dear Readers, Rumour has it that schools are now off until December or even January. We have tried to contact the Ministry of Education to verify if this rumour is true or false, however we were unable to get a definite answer. So with this in mind, we got in touch with some parents in Sharm, and here is what we found: Many distraught parents are extremely worried about their children’s education. Several of them are even talking about leaving Egypt. Several other parents have not heard about such delay. Well, whether it happens or not, the best thing we can do at the moment is try to get our children’s minds working and not letting them lapse into laziness. Start by getting them to do at least an hour’s work a day. Buy exercise books and refresh their memories. Even fix with other parents or friends for your children to study together to encourage them. Don’t forget Sharmers, the future lies in their hands. Sincerely, The Editor Got something to say? Phew, maybe some peace at last as their shouts and accusations had brought many people to their windows and balconies. He looked so frail, sad and lonely; I couldn’t help but feel so sorry for him. This made me start to think about all the times recently that I had complained about my life and everything going on. Suddenly I started to feel guilty; it really is as they say: ‘there is always someone worse off than yourself’ so stop complaining and be thankful for what you do have. Stirring in bed, I was suddenly awakened by the sound of cars screeching and metal grinding and clanking into each other. I jumped out of bed and ran to my window. There in the street I could see red and blue metal moulded together, while I was reaching for the phone to dial the emergency number, I was desperately searching for any one injured, luckily everyone seemed to be alright. Having placed my call, I jumped into my shoes and raced to the door and down the stairs into the street. I hadn’t missed much, except that the drivers of both vehicles had started to argue, curse and swear at each other. I stood back for a couple of minutes just listening to what was going on and was quite appalled at what I heard. They were bickering about whose fault it was and each was demanding the other pay for the damage done. When clearly they had both been going too fast, so were both to blame. They were going on about how much trouble they would get into because of the damage done to the cars. I felt sorry for them and wished there was some way I could help. I stood there for a couple more minutes than started to approach them. At that moment, the police came racing down the street. Things had started to get aggressive, so to my advantage, they broke up the arguement. It turned out that they were friends and had been racing for a bet, so I thought to myself; ‘Not everything you see is what it appears to be...’ The police were none too pleased to find this out and carted them both off to the police station. Phew, maybe some peace at last as their shouts and accusations had brought many people to their windows and balconies. Got something to say? E-mail [email protected]

for sharmers only...

There are so many national traditions, celebrations, occasions and festivals worldwide; many of them we haven’t even heard of! So why not make up some of our own, just for Sharm. Here are a few suggestions that we found while talking to different Sharmers on their opinion:

Carnival de Sharm is a must, where instead of floats we use quad bikes and camels that roam the streets, styled and decorated in colourful costumes. That should certainly be a sight to behold in the streets of Sharm, and who knows, it may become one of the world’s most long-awaited events.

Divemas, where once a year all the divers in particular and non-divers get together in appreciation and

gratitude of the amazing underwater wonders and enjoy the great corals and life below the waves. We can make it a national holiday where people come from all over to celebrate it with us.

Khartiween to mark when the ‘kharti’ guys were banned and can be celebrated by giving each other presents brought from the bazaars and shops where the ‘kharti’ guys used to stand.

Some of you reading this may think that we have lost our minds, but don’t. You never know what is going to happen tomorrow, so the best thing we can do is try. It certainly worked out very well in various places. Here are a few of the most popular events around the world: The Carnival in Rio is considered one of the greatest shows on Earth. The first festivals of Rio date back to 1723 where everyone goes out dancing in the streets that are full of floats and having fun. Colorful and exquisite costumes are carefully planned throughout the year. The best costumes can be seen on Sunday and Monday of Carnival week in the specially constructed SAMBÓDROMO. The dates on which Carnival (Mardi Gras) happens depend on a religious calendar (Roman Catholic Church). The Carnival (Mardi Gras) starts on Saturday and ends on Tuesday. Guy Fawkes Night is an annual celebration on the evening of 5 November. It celebrates the attempted Gunpowder Plot of 5 November 1605, in which a number of Catholic conspirators, including Guy Fawkes, were alleged to be attempting to blow up the Houses of Parliament, in London, England. In the United Kingdom, celebrations take place in towns and villages across the country in the form of both private and civic events. They involve fireworks displays and the building of bonfires on which ‘Guys’ are burnt, depicting the infamous Guy Fawkes. Halloween is celebrated on October 31st. Halloween originated from the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain. The festival of Samhain is a celebration of the end of the harvest season in Gaelic culture, and is sometimes regarded as the “Celtic New Year”. We know Halloween as the time to throw great fancy dress parties where we dress up and have fun... Adults as well as kids enjoy this occasion with the chance to be someone you are not. So, why not we start our set of traditions? Let’s make our own; who says we have to stick to the rules; let’s make Sharm’s own traditions. After all, we are pioneers of a newborn land, and it is up to us to pave the way for future generations. Do you have any ideas? Please let us know by emailing [email protected]

useful sharm facts...

Maybe you have just moved to Sharm or you have been living here for a while, well you can always learn something new. It is not about the length of time you have been here but about how you deal with living in Sharm. Here are several tips to help you in Sharm and make your life slightly easier: • Most people expect tips in Sharm for doing things; however don’t tip proud Egyptians as they will get really insulted. • When shopping in Sharm for vegetables and household items, head towards the Old Market, as you will find things are cheaper and there is a larger variety to choose from. However if you want the foreign brands, head towards Metro. • When driving in Sharm, try to steer clear of taxis and mini buses, as they always speed up and it is not worth having an accident trying to overtake them. • When renting a flat here, establish first how much electricity and water is going to cost you and whether it is included in the price of rent. • Make sure you read papers and contracts thoroughly first before signing anything. If you don’t understand the language they are written in, get a trusted translator or lawyer. • There are so many different nationalities and religions in Sharm, so don’t act racist otherwise you will never fit in. • In Sharm, everyone knows everyone. So, if you need anything, you just have to ask someone. • Water, drinking water in the desert is essential. In Sharm, tap water cannot be used for drinking or in cooking and using bottled water for everything can be a bit expensive. There are drinking water trucks that pass by several times a day. The water is from El Tor and can be used for drinking and cooking. Also, it is a lot cheaper. • To find out what Sharm is really all about, read the Sinai Weekly :-) If you have any other tips, or words of advice from previous experiences, (which I’m sure you have), feel free to share them with us, and prevent others from going through what you did, as it will help everyone in the long run. Well Sharmers, enjoy the sun and sea while you can, and have fun living in one of the most beautiful places in the world. Remember you are the ones who make the place, not the place that makes you. 3000 Thoughts a Day E.Moon

I keep the telephone of my mind open to peace, harmony, health, love and abundance. Whenever doubt, anxiety or fear tries to call me, they keep getting the busy tone; soon they’ll forget my number. (Edith Armstrong) Every day of my life is beautiful; every morning there is new hope. Yesterday the 19th September, was more than beautiful as I attended the wedding of two of my most beloved friends. Sermoneta is a thirteenth century hill town in Central Italy, on the 19th Spetember it was filled with sunshine, music, song, laughter and love, with a gathering of family and friends who had travelled from all over the world to celebrate this special union. The daylight receded as if soaked up into the ancient walls and cobblestones, I gave thanks to God for all the love I had shared during the day and as a new day dawned I whispered a special message to you, “I wish you all the very best by the grace of Allah, let there be peace within you and within the world you inhabit, Eid Mubarak.” So instead of celebrating that very special day in the sunshine with my friends in Sharm, I took some quiet time out, in my hotel in Italy with a raging thunderstorm outside. A perfect day to do nothing and think of nothing!

“WHAT, HOW DO YOU THINK OF NOTHING?” I have been trying to think of nothing for the last hour, and it is impossible! Ok I could visualise, I could even use self-hypnosis but I can’t hypnotise myself for the whole day. Did you know we have two to three thousand thoughts a day? Then I remembered a teacher telling my parents when I was around six that I had an overactive brain! What on earth did that mean? Okay that comment served me well, every time I behaved badly my parents would look at each other, shrug their shoulders, look at me pitifully and say to each other “well it must be her overactive brain!” I watch funny DVD’s to silence my thoughts, read hundreds of books, now and then have great conversations with friends and on a daily basis try to laugh a lot. I avoid television, it makes my senses, all of them, feel as if I have been intellectually and emotionally raped. I don’t need to witness torture, death, family dysfunction, starving children, vulgarity and the myriad of insane substance, physical and emotional abuse in the Page 10

21st century as some form of sadistic entertainment. It might be the world I inhabit but I don’t need to experience it vicariously. Advertisements are for the mentally retarded. Have you seen the latest ones for mascara? It promises lashes of extreme length and separation. The only possible thing that has lashes like that is a mascara’d camel! It is all lies. What about the family including the grandfather making a feast of a lump of cheese? What’s that all about? If that grandfather has been eating that amount of cheese he’d have been dead twenty years ago from clogged arteries. What about Bran, it’s not a new invention, is it? Career woman coming down the stairs beautifully dressed, coiffed and cosmetically enhanced, reaches the front door carrying her designer hand bag, Stops looks at her handbag, frowns, worried look as if she’s lost a million pounds. Dashes up the stairs again. Where has she gone? Did she forget her cheque book? The plot thickens; it must have something to do with the handbag! She comes down the stairs again; a benign smile on her face swinging the handbag, then a voice-over announces a laxative pill! Like Hello, what’s the handbag got to do with reminding this stupid woman she needed to use the toilet? Was she considering the weight of her handbag or what? Was she considering that if she got caught short on her way to work she could hide behind a bush and use her thousand pound Gucci? What is the significance of writing a complicated story-line around the word ‘Constipation?’ Perhaps now you can understand and sympathise with the way my brain continuously acts and reacts, believe me it is not any easy thing to live with on a daily basis. At least writing this I have around eight hundred thoughts out of my mind; unfortunately you are now the recipients. As a wise man once told me:

Think respectfully, speak quietly, and tread gently. Your thoughts, like your words leave footprints in the minds of others.

Judgment: The majority of people here are extremely judgmental; they judge everyone and everything for what they do or don’t do; what they look like; or who they are… People should start by looking at themselves first before others.

Traditions: Greetings: in Egypt it is very common to see public displays of affection when people greet each other. Whether two females or two males; they hug, kiss and greet each other warmly. So, don’t be surprised at what you see.

A View Of Egypt

Destinations: This issue we will visit the beautiful town of Ismailia. Ismailia is one of Egypt’s jewels; it is full of beautiful nature and greenery found nowhere else. Ismailia has a bit of everything from the blue sea to green fields, so what more could you ask for??? Ismailia lies between Port Said and Suez. It is a beautiful town that harbours great history as does most destinations in Egypt. It was founded in 1863, during the construction of the Suez Canal, by Ismail the Magnificent, after whom the city is named. Another important landmark in Ismailia is the Suez Canal University that was established in 1976 to serve the region of Suez Canal and Sinai. Suez Canal University now is one of the fastest growing educational institutes in Egypt with many students studying abroad. So, Ismailia should definitely be on your list of places to see in Egypt if you are looking for soemthing with more of a natural feel. Page 12

How To Find a Good Value Hotel in Sharm Egypt’s playground, Sharm el Sheikh, is now emerging from the fierce heat of its summer months and getting ready for peak season. Between June and September temperatures soar to 30°C and above, testing even the most resilient sun lovers. Sightseeing can become a tricky task – the nearby Mount Sinai’s 3,750 ‘Steps of Penitence’ are laden with meaning in these temperatures. But as Sharm el Sheikh gets into winter mode, holiday-makers can look forward to a cooler desert experience. Today, Sharm el Sheikh is a far cry from the sleepy backpacker village of 20 years ago. Those hoping to find evidence of Sharm’s Bedouin roots will have a hunt on their hands. Something more slick has emerged. But it has its place. Sharm now caters for a far wider audience than just backpackers and ardent scuba divers (it was the divers who spotted the destination’s potential long before the rest of us). Dynamic Packaging ‘Buoyant’ Over Summer Dynamic packaging remained buoyant this summer because of a late sales surge, according to bed bank youtravel.com. In June, July and August, average sales value was up 12% against summer 2008, largely because of currency fluctuations. Sales volumes were equal to last year. Majorca was the top seller this summer, with Sharm el-Sheikh second, and Dalaman, Turkey, third. This was followed by the Algarve, Rhodes, Costa Blanca, Crete and Costa del Sol. Youtravel.com sales and marketing director Paul Riches said: “Egypt performed well, proving it is a real contender as a year-round destination.” Youtravel.com’s bookings for winter 09/10 are down 10% against last year. However, the bed bank predicts that Tunisia is set to be popular as it offers budgetfriendly bookings and is not in the eurozone. For more info, please visit: http:// www.travelweekly.co.uk

Agents Targeted For Red Sea Mega Fam Fifty UK and Irish agents or tour operator reservations staff are being given the opportunity to win a place on a mega fam to Egypt. Jaz Hotels, Resorts & Cruises is running the five-day pre-Christmas trip to Sharm el Sheikh to mark the start of British Airways flights to the Red Sea resort from Gatwick next month. To stand a chance to win a place on the trip on December 10-15, agents must make a booking to any Jaz Hotels & Resorts properties including a BA flight, and report it by November 20. The 50 successful applicants will be drawn at random after the closing date. The hotel group’s regional vice president sales and marketing Peter Grace said: “Building relationships with travel agency and reservations staff as well as homeworkers is key to Jaz Hotels success in the UK and Ireland. “The new BA service to Sharm El Sheikh has offered us a great opportunity to develop these relationships as a major initiative, the Jaz Mega Fam; while we have started with 50 agents in 2009, we hope to increase these numbers going forward and make Jaz Mega Fam an annual event.” Winning agents or operators will stay for four nights on an all-inclusive basis at the Jaz Belvedere, Jaz Hotels’ flagship resort in Egypt’s Red Sea Riviera. Participants will also view all other Jaz, Iberotel and Sol Y Mar hotels in the destination, and take part in a number of activities and special events.

Yo-Yo

remember this?

The yo-yo is that small circular toy on the end of a string that goes up and down. The yo-yo is made from two equally sized pieces of plastic, wood or metal with an axis in the middle that a string is looped around. How you play with this toy, is by throwing it down so that the string unwinds, then rewinds and so on. There is a loop at the end of the string that you slip your finger through to have control over the yo-yo. The earliest surviving yo-yo dates to 500 BCE and was made using turtle skin disks. But as with everything these days, its modern version is a lot different from the original, but hey, that’s life; we have to move forward. The yo-yo has taken many forms over the years and different shapes including the imperial, modified and butterfly as well as several others which are not so popular: Humphrey, Ball, Slimline, Russell Style (Bulge Face), Puck, Satellite, Coaster and Riveted Disk. Also, there are many tricks you can do with a yo-yo such as Sleeping (keeping the yo-yo spinning while remaining at the end of its uncoiled string), looping (keeping the body of the yo-yo in constant motion, without sleeping), off-string (the yo-yo’s string is not tied directly to the yo-yo’s axle, and the yo-yo is usually launched into the air by performing a “forward pass” to be caught again on the string) and freehand (the yo-yo’s string is not tied to the player’s hand, instead ending in a counterweight. The counterweight is then thrown from hand to hand and used as an additional element in the trick). Being so popular, there are many contests and competitions held for the yo-yo such as The International Yo-Yo Open which is the largest yo-yo contest in the world and is held every year in August at South Street Seaport in New York City. Then there is the World Yo-Yo Contest which is held every year in Florida, USA during early August or late July. A yo-yo competition normally consists of two parts, a set of compulsory tricks and a freestyle, where points are scored for each and the winner is the one who scores the most points. Well, this is a toy for adults as well as children, so get out and get a yo-yo; it is yo-yo time.

green is good Green, is my favourite colour, but is it yours too?

The minister attributed delays in delivering the gas to technical problems but said the problems had been solved. Egypt will conduct a test on September 8 to ensure that everything is in order. Neither Lebanon nor Egypt disclosed the actual cost of gas to Beddawi.

Green can refer to many things including the American dollar and emeralds, but most commonly it is the greenery and foliage. Did you know that the word ‘Green’ is closely related to the Old English verb growan meaning “to grow”?

In principle, Egypt will supply Lebanon with 30 million cubic feet of gas and this amount will operate two turbines at Beddawi plant.

Also, in some cultures, green symbolizes hope and growth, while in others; it is known to be associated with death, sickness, envy, or even the devil. But the most popular it is associated with is nature, regeneration, fertility and rebirth. We are no strangers to the concept, as Green was symbolic of resurrection and immortality in Ancient Egypt, where the god Osiris was depicted as green-skinned.

The plant was originally built in 1996 to run on gas but officials at the Energy Ministry failed to build proper networks and pipelines between the plant and neighboring countries.

Nowadays, going green usually means anything that is environmentally friendly. Well, here we keep you up to date with what’s Green in the world and what is going on with our planet today…

Tabourian told reporters that the Egyptian gas will not boost production but would instead reduce the cost of energy bill.

Lebanon to start receiving Egyptian gas mid-September Lebanon will finally receive the long-awaited Egyptian gas to run the gas-fired Beddawi plant in the middle of this month, said the energy ministers of Lebanon and Egypt. Visiting Egyptian Oil Minister Sameh Fahmi, who was speaking at a press conference with his Lebanese counterpart Alain Tabourian, said that gas will cross Jordan and Syria before reaching Lebanon.

Experts say natural gas is 30 percent cheaper than fuel oil and more environmentally friendly. “We are running our plants at full capacity and we can’t provide electricity to all of Lebanon at the same time. We need an additional 800 MW to meet growing demand,” Tabourian said. http://www.dailystar.com.lb/article. asp?edition_id=1&categ_id=3&article_ id=105986 Page 17

RULES OF THE GAME Players: 2 - 4 Aim: to reach the Golden Cup first. I am sure all of you have heard of snakes and ladders, well this is Sharm’s own version; here if you land on an ‘Up’ you go up the palm tree, but if you land on a ‘down’ you go down with the anchor. All ‘ups’ and ‘downs’ are things associated with our everyday life as Sharmers, so see if we can learn

how to help Sharm whilst having fun playing this game. All you need for this game is a dice then away you go: Start by throwing the dice and the one with the highest number starts; you work your way across the board according to numbers except when you land on a special square then you go either up or down. However, if you throw a six, you get another turn. Now what could be simpler than that?

LIBRA (Sept. 24 -Oct. 23) You’ve been a little down and you need a lift. Opportunities to get together with friends will be enlightening and entertaining. You will have to make changes in order to eliminate the tension. You will be emotional about money matters.

In their personal relationships they show understanding of the other person’s point of view, trying to resolve any differences by compromise, and are often willing to allow claims against themselves to be settled to their own disadvantage rather than spoil a relationship. They like the opposite sex to the extent of promiscuity sometimes, and may indulge in romanticism bordering on sentimentality. Their marriages, however, stand a good chance of success because they are frequently the union of “true minds”. The Libran’s continuing kindness toward his or her partner mollifies any hurt the latter may feel if the two have had a tiff. Nor can the Libran’s spouse often complain that he or she is not understood, for the Libran is usually the most empathetic of all the zodiacal types and the most ready to tolerate the beloved’s failings. The negative Libran character may show frivolity, flirtatiousness and shallowness. It can be changeable and indecisive, impatient of routine, colorlessly conventional and timid, easygoing to the point of inertia, seldom angry when circumstances demand a show of annoyance at least; and yet Librans can shock everyone around them with sudden storms of rage. Their love of pleasure may lead them into extravagance; Libran men can degenerate into reckless gamblers, and Libran women extravagant, jealous and careless about money sometimes squander their wealth and talents in their overenthusiasm for causes which they espouse. Both sexes can become great gossipers. A characteristic of the type is an insatiable curiosity that tempts them to enquire into every social scandal in their circle. SCORPIO (Oct.24 -Nov. 22) Verbal abuse could lead to carelessness. Pleasure trips will promote new romantic encounters. Try not to allow others to burden you with additional responsibilities. Sign up for courses that will bring you more skills.

Chair Pose I (Utkatasana I) A strong, straight lower back is the foundation of every correct position and is consequently important in any Yoga pose. In this exercise, you strengthen the lower back and the legs and by doing so, you create more space in the chest and belly.

up straight again, bend your body forward, and feel if the “groove” is there. Let the weight of the upper body sink into the pelvis, relax the calve muscles so that the weight of the body can be most efficiently directed into the ground.

STEP 1: Start with the Mountain Pose (Tadasana).

The chest bone is moved slightly towards the belly. The breathing is relaxed and goes through the belly or towards the chest bone. Build up the exercise quietly and remain focused on a correct position of the back, chest, and pelvis.

STEP 2: Inhale and stretch your arms, lengthen the spine, and be careful not to press the lower ribs to the front. STEP 3: Exhale and bend your knees and move your upper body forward at 45 degrees. See to it that your lower back is straight. You can do this by letting your hand feel whether there is a “groove” in the middle of the lower back. If this is not the case, then stand

Midnight Excursion

zen

Many pupils were studying meditation under the Zen master Sengai. One of them used to arise at night, climb over the temple wall, and go to town on a pleasure jaunt.

SAGITTARIUS(Nov.23-Dec. 22) Make plans to meet again in the near future. Social functions will bring you in touch with new lovers. You need to fulfill your needs and pre sent your talents. If you have treated them equitably, you might be able to count on their loyalty.

Sengai, inspecting the dormitory quarters, found this pupil missing one night and also discovered the high stool he had used to scale the wall. Sengai removed the stool and stood there in its place.

CAPRICORN (Dec22.-Jan. 20) Socializing or travel will lead to partnerships. Do not ruffle feathers if possible. This is a good day to check out your investments. Your emotional partner will push the right buttons this week.

When the wanderer returned, not knowing that Sengai was the stool, he put his feet on the master’s head and jumped down into the grounds. Discovering what he had done, he was aghast.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 21 -Feb. 19) You need to do more things that you enjoy. Let your lover know what your personal intentions are. Stay away from social unpleasantness. If you are not already, think about going into business for yourself.

Sengai said: “It is very chilly in the early morning. Do be careful not to catch cold yourself.”

PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20) You could meet an interesting individual you’ll want to get to know better. Do not over expand if you have your own business. Sit tight. Accomplishment is yours if you direct yourself accordingly. Use your creative abilities to come up with new ideas and directions. ARIES (Mar. 21- April 20) You will enjoy socializing and unusual forms of entertainment. Friends may not be completely honest with you. You’re in the mood to spend time with your lover. Don’t be too quick to respond to a plea for help. TAURUS (Apr. 21- May 21) Someone you care about may not be too pleased with you. Don’t be afraid to make additions to your house. You should check out prestigious clubs or groups that have a cause you believe in. Romance can surface if you get into some of those fitness programs you’ve been putting off. GEMINI (May 22-June 21) Older relatives may make unreasonable demands. Work hard on improving your living quarters. You need to get out if you want to meet potential partners. Don’t let someone talk you into parting with your cash unless you can truly see the benefits of doing so. CANCER (June 22-July 22) Problems with gas, oil, or water in your home may disrupt your routine. Don’t avoid your true feelings. You may be frazzled this week. You can expect insincere gestures of friendliness this week. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You have to take hold of your life and make some crucial decisions. Your best efforts will come through making changes in your home. Do not allow colleagues to hinder your ambitions. You could lose money or precious belongings if you aren’t careful. VIRGO (Aug. 23 -Sep. 23) Jealousy may be a contributing factor to your emotional ups and downs. You can pick up some overtime this week. Property deals look good. You will have a great deal of insight when dealing with others. Page 20

“At the end of your life, you will never regret not having passed one more test, not winning one more verdict, or not closing one more deal. You will regret time not spent with a husband, a friend, a child, or a parent.” – Barbara Bush. “Courage is like a muscle. We strengthen it with use.” – Ruth Gordon. “Don’t be afraid your life will end; be afraid that it will never begin.” – Grace Hansen. “Each day is a new canvas to paint upon. Make sure your picture is full of life and happiness, and at the end of the day you don’t look at it and wish you had painted something different.” – Author Unknown. “How far you go in life depends on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving, and tolerant of the weak and strong. Because someday in your life you will have been all of these.” – George Washington Carver.

egyptian proverb “malekyoush fi ‘elward 3eib kalom ya ‘aHmar el-khaddein” Translation: They found no wrong with roses, so they said it is red! Meaning: People will disagree with you no matter how perfect you are. Usage: When people criticize just for the sake of criticizing.

start ur day

with... a hug

Whether it is your husband, partner, child or pet, • Oxytocin Hormones: A study by University of North Carolina researchers found that hugs increase the “bonding” hormone oxytocin and decrease the risk of heart disease. Touch also releases two feel-good brain chemicals, serotonin and dopamine. • Reduces stress: a previous study found that hugging, handholding and therapeutic touch can reduce stress and pain among adults, and reduces symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, such as restlessness, pacing, vocalization, searching and tapping. • Endorphins: hugging increases the body’s endorphins, relieving us from pain and creating a mild euphoria. Medical facilities and treatment centers across the globe are realizing its true healing value, and now use hug and touch therapy for the treatment of pain, depression and fear in their patients. One could almost say that hugs are natural painkillers.

you ask. muriel answers. Hi Muriel, I just came back from a holiday with my parents. It was ok - I can say. But I noticed that as soon as I am around them I suddenly feel tense, stressed, can’t breathe too well. I know the reason, and this because I am hiding stuff from them, and the reason I am hiding it is no matter what I say or do, we could never agree, or agree to disagree. They would insist on trying to convince me. So you can say, I am picking my battles. Any advice on what I can do to make that feeling go away? Thanks

Answer: I wish I knew what age you are, my guess is you are in early adolescence, which can be anywhere between 14 and 18. There are very profound stages we go through in our life which is why it is important for me to know ages and also where you are in the family hierarchy with regard to siblings, such as: you are a middle child or the eldest child etc. The interesting thing about your letter is that you didn’t suffer the symptoms of stress and anxiety (which you are experiencing now) whilst you were away with your parents. Perhaps this because families are more relaxed on holiday. The stage you are going through is quite normal, you are trying to assert your independence, however you are still a dependant, which is why you need your parent’s approval for most things you want to do. I don’t think you are picking your battles, you are simply growing up and sometimes there is just too much to cope with on your own. Dialogue is the only way to communicate your worries and problems but of course I can understand why you feel nervous and pressurized about this. Try to remember your parents have been through the exact stage you are going through now. Would it be possible for you to sit down and write a letter to your mother telling her you love her, but this is exactly how you feel and your greatest wish is to be able to talk to her about your problems. Explain how important it is to be able to share and reach a compromise with both of your parents. Perhaps you could show her these letters. Be sure in your heart she loves you and wants you to be happy, but be aware your parents know what the risks are for young people and sometimes you will need to bow to their experience and wisdom. Thank you for your letter and I do hope you can find the courage to allow your parents into your life a little bit more. To send in your question please email: [email protected] Muriel holds a M.A., (Hons) in Counseling Psychology and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress. Accredited ACA. Childern An easier number puzzle is as follows. Two friends are chatting: - Peter, how old are your children? - Well Thomas, there are three of them and the product of their ages is 36. - That is not enough ... - The sum of their ages is exactly the number of beers we have drunk today. - That is still not enough. - OK, the last thing is that my oldest child wears a red hat.

How old were each of Peter’s children?

Number TEASER

Easy Deduction - solution None of the students can have numbers 1 or 10, since they would guess the other one’s number with no problems. I will describe solutions at one end of the interval of numbers 1-10 (the same can be done on the other end). Information that the second student does not know must be important for the first student. So the first one must expect that the second one has 1 or 3 (if the first one has 2). And as the second student does not know, then he has certainly not 1. So the first pair is 2 and 3. If the first one had 3, then he would expect the other one to have either 2 or 4. But if the second one had 2 (and the second one would have known that the first one does not have 1), then he would know the number of the first student. However, neither the second student knows the answer – so he has 4. The second pair of numbers is 3 and 4. Solutions at the other end of interval are 9 and 8 or 8 and 7. Complex Deduction - solution The numbers were 2 and 9

Answer the following test, giving ‘yes’ and ‘no’ answers. Every positive answer gives you one point; whereas every negative one gives you none.

How Adaptable Are You? 1. Do you enjoy going to different places and meeting new people?

3 3

quiz

4

YES / NO

2. Do you think that you adapt to new surroundings and environment rather quickly?

YES / NO

3. Are you quick to learn and respect the diversity of people, cultures and values?

YES / NO

4. Are you flexible by nature?

YES / NO

5. Do you always try to look on the brighter side, even in difficult situations?

YES / NO

6. If your favourite table at the restaurant was occupied, would you not mind sitting somewhere else?

YES / NO

7. Do you readily accept change as a part of life?

YES / NO

8. Are you able to modify your attitude to adjust to your current or future environment?

YES / NO

Master of logic puzzles I (dots) The wisest one must have thought like this: I see all hands up and 2 red dots, so I can have either a blue or a red dot. If I had a blue one, the other 2 guys would see all hands up and one red and one blue dot. So they would have to think that if the second one of them (the other with red dot) sees the same blue dot, then he must see a red dot on the first one with red dot. However, they were both silent (and they are wise), so I have a red dot on my forehead.

9. Do you mind new situation?

YES / NO

10. Are you able to handle or deal with different things in a positive manner?

YES / NO

Master of logic puzzles II (hats) The important thing in this riddle is that all masters had equal chances to win. If one of them had been given a black hat and the other white hats, the one with black hat would immediately have known his color (unlike the others). So 1 black and 2 white hats is not a fair distribution.

8 – 10 points: You are a very adaptable person and find it easy to move around; wherever you are you will be able to make friends and be happy as you make the best of the situation. 4 – 7 points: You are set in your way in certain things but can adapt to others. You do not make a big deal out of change and will go easily with the flow.

Brain Teaser These are typical logic problems which can be solved by using classic logic operations.

Master Of Logic Puzzles III (stamps)

Try this. The Grand Master takes a set of 8 stamps, 4 red and 4 green, known to the logicians, and loosely affixes two to the forehead of each logician so that each logician can see all the other stamps except those 2 in the Grand Master’s pocket and the two on her own forehead. He asks them in turn if they know the colors of their own stamps: A: “No.” B: “No.” C: “No.” A: “No.” B: “Yes.”

What color stamps does B have? L a s t i s s ue s o l ut i o n s

If there had been one white and two black hats distributed, then the two with black hats would have had advantage. They would have been able to see one black and one white hat and supposing they had been given white hat, then the one with black hat must at once react as in the previous situation. However, if he had remained silent, then the guys with black hats would have known that they wear black hats, whereas the one with white hat would have been forced to eternal thinking with no clear answer. So neither this is a fair situation. That’s why the only way of giving each master an equal chance is to distribute hats of one color – so 3 black hats. Stay tuned for more solutions.

Less than three points: You would be like a fish out of water doing something different and what you are not used to. You tend to stick to the familiar and known, rather than venture out. But life is about learning, so take that step once in a while. Page 27
