in the news Local profiles featured for Disability Awareness Month Twenty percent of all Americans have a disability of some kind, according to census statistics. In recognition of Disability Awareness Month, KRCB As KRCB is again presenting short profiles of five wheelchair users here in the Bay Area. First produced as part of the “1 in 5 Project,” in April, 2008, these five short interstitial segments will be broadcast on KRCB-TV between longer programs throughout October:

• Coach – Chris Finn of Berkeley leads nationally-ranked

Power Soccer teams, and led the World Cup-Winning 2007 Team USA. • Target Practice – Tom Molina of Santa Rosa spends a relaxing morning with a good friend, practicing his archery. • The Art of Movement – Judith Smith is the Artistic Director and a dancer for AXIS, a nationally-touring professional dance group based in Oakland. • Leadership – In the early 1970s, Anthony Tusler was one of the leaders who brought advocacy for Disability Rights, in the spirit of all contemporary civil rights battles, to Sonoma County. • Baby Care – Occupational therapist Judi Rogers helps parents with disabilities navigate the world of baby care, by offering her unique expertise on commercially-avail able baby care equipment. Streaming video of these short programs is also available anytime online, at www.bestseatfest.org. Additionally, KRCB will air two longer documentaries that address disability issues this month. KRCB in the community Further support for coastal history film project You may recall that KRCB is working with Marin County filmmakers Nancy Kelly and Kenji Yamamoto on a documentary, Moments in Time. The documentary tells the story of the creation of the Point Reyes National Seashore and the Golden Gate National Recreational Area and how a group of determined citizens, landowners, and local government officials prevented massive development along the Marin and Sonoma Coasts in the 1960s and ‘70s. In the process, they created a model of environmental stewardship and land management for controlled urban growth in juxtaposition with agricultural land use. Last year, we received a generous grant from the Wallace Alexander Gerbode Foundation in support of this project, and we have been very fortunate to receive a second grant from the Foundation, for $75,000, towards further work on the film. Dear Member, During 2009, KRCB has been incredibly fortunate to have received support from the wills of several long-term KRCB supporters and members. I’m sure I don’t need to tell you that in these very rough financial times such unexpected gifts are like manna from heaven. So needed and so appreciated. As you will elsewhere in this issue of Open Air, there are a number of vehicles through which you can support your local public broadcasting station, KRCB. On page five, KRCB Board member Harry Rubins discusses opportunities involving IRAs. Several members have set up annuities naming KRCB as a beneficiary with their local community foundation while others have considered purchasing a life insurance policy naming the station as the beneficiary. Three times a year we mail a brochure helpful in considering and defining your own charitable intentions. The Visions mailings have helped a number of folks think these issues through. If you would like to be added to the mailing list, just let me know. Of course the simplest way to leave a gift to KRCB might well be a designation in your will. These gifts can be unrestricted or restricted; your choice of course. Restricted support might be directed towards, for example, local programming or equipment or a particular program genre. Or some donors specify that their gift should go into the KRCB endowment where the gift is invested and continues to support the station for many years into the future. Others make their gift unrestricted, knowing that our Board and staff will put the gift to the best use at the time. Once you have considered the needs of your family and loved ones, I hope you will also consider KRCB as a trusted community partner that you would like to support for years to come. Wrestling with Manhood is the first educational program to pay attention to the enormous popularity of professional wrestling among male youth, addressing its relationship to real-life violence and probing the social values that sustain it as a powerful cultural force. Richly illustrating their analysis with numerous examples, Sut Jhally and Jackson Katz—the award-winning creators of the videos Dreamworlds and Tough Guise, respectively—offer a new way to think about the enduring problems of men’s violence against women and bullying in our schools. Tuesday, October 13 at 9 pm Coming November 10 – Generation M Despite the achievements of the women’s movement over the past four decades, misogyny remains a persistent force in American culture. In this important documentary, Thomas Keith, professor of philosophy at California State University-Long Beach, looks specifically at misogyny and sexism in mainstream American media.

The provision for individuals age 70½ or older to make charitable contributions from their IRA will expire December 31, 2009. So time is running out for individuals over age 70 ½ to donate as much as $100,000 from their IRAs to charities. The distributions are tax free. In the past years these charitable distributions counted towards the taxable Required Minimum Distributions IRA owners in this age group had to take. Congress suspended age 70½ Required Minimum Distributions for 2009 but not the charitable distribution from an IRA. For someone who is considering making a charitable contribution they can still do so with IRA funds. The distributions made directly to the charities will not be reported as income on their tax return. For those who are charitably inclined it still makes sense to do charitable contributions this way. KRCB honors Disability Awareness month Minds on the Edge: Facing Mental Illness

This program connects the dots between personal dilemmas facing individuals and families who are living with mental illness, medical practices that can be obstacles to treatment, laws that may have unintended consequences, and public policies that all too often fall short in responding with programs that could make a positive difference. It zeros in on wrenching and confounding situations that are playing out every day in homes and hospital ERs, on city streets and school campuses, in courtrooms and in jails, as Americans struggle with the challenges of severe mental illness. Photojournalist Dan Habib rarely thought about inclusion before he had his son Samuel. Now he thinks about inclusion every day. Habib’s film, Including Samuel, examines the educational and social inclusion of youth with disabilities. The film documents the Habib family’s journey as they work to include Samuel, now 9, in all facets of their lives, a journey that transforms each of them. Including Samuel also features four other families with varied inclusion experiences, plus interviews with teachers, parents and disability rights experts. Waging War On Cancer with Paula Zahn Cancer Pain: Easing The Agony

For many of us there are few things more frightening than a diagnosis of cancer. But thanks to recent breakthroughs and new treatments millions more people today have become cancer survivors. Unfortunately, there’s often a dark lining to the sunny statistics: cancer pain. But there is an array of options to treat pain and to give cancer survivors hope for a future free from this agony. In this program we meet survivors who have had debilitating pain and hear what they’ve done to combat it, plus we speak with experts in cancer pain and hear about pain therapies that are available today, and some that will be available in the future. Mesothelioma: The Hidden Threat

Decades ago America was building the cities of the future. But there was a danger lurking in those buildings and many others around the world: asbestos. Many of the workers exposed to the asbestos in those construction projects dozens of years ago today are being diagnosed with a devastating form of cancer called mesothelioma. In this program we examine the causes and the treatments for mesothelioma and meet patients who are doing battle with this difficult disease. Wells’ classic radio thriller. The breathless pace and convincing details make it clear why the 1938 broadcast of an eyewitness report of an invasion from Mars caused a nationwide panic. Also, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s rollicking adventure, The Lost World, follows a scientific expedition deep into the Amazon jungle—right back into the time of dinosaurs and cavemen. Word By Word is celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the California Writers Club (founded by such local literary luminaries as Jack London, Joaguin Miller and Ina Coolbrith) by talking with and hearing readings from a few of the authors who will be featured at the Redwood Writers/CWC 2009 Writers Conference (October 24th at Santa Rosa’s Flamingo Hotel and Resort). Joining host Gil Mansergh around the table for a freewheeling conversation will be western mystery novelist Steve Hockensmith (Holmes on the Range), memoirist Tamim Ansary (West of Kabul, East of New York), and SF Chronicle columnist Adair Lara (Naked, Drunk and Writing). Russian fiction from a local writer

Barbara Baer, editor and publisher of Floreant Press, introduced her new book, Grisha the Scrivener, at the Sonoma County Book Festival in September. The story is set in the former USSR, where Barbara lived for some time, and concludes in contemporary independent Russia. Barbara’s familiarity with the region, combined with her skillful writing, gives an immediacy to the poignant story. Barbara will be the featured author on A Novel Idea on Wednesday evening, October 14, discussing her work with program host Rosemary Manchester. Barbara is a prominent member of the local literary community, and has won national journalism awards for essays and fiction. Grisha is her first novella. Wednesday, October 14 at 7 pm

A Poetry Party on WordTemple

WordTemple host Katherine Hastings throws a Poetry Party this month, featuring poetry and music from Yusef Komunyakaa, John Updike, Marilyn Hacker, and Anais Nin reading from her diary about French playwright, poet, actor and theatre director Antonin Artaud. Plus Kate Royal singing “I Have Dreamt” from Wuthering Heights, and poet Arisa White with the Jessica Jones Quartet. The program also includes a visit from Sonoma County poet Michael Rothenberg who will give an introduction to Rockpile, a collaboration between Rothenberg and David Meltzer that will send them through eight cities in the US to perform poetry and prose composed on the road with local musicians and artists in each city. From climate change to mental health, KRCB offers in-depth explorations of some of the knottiest issues that confront our society today, Thursday evenings following All Things Considered. October 1 – The Truth About Green Business: The Potential for Jobs and Prosperity Running a profitable business that takes care of the environment, provides meaningful jobs, and helps the community is an oxymoron, right? Not so fast. Gil Friend of Natural Logic, Inc. suggests that green business practices are good for business and the world. A Climate One presentation. October 8 – Minds on the Edge Mental health professionals and policy makers grapple with the challenges and consequences of mental illness in a free society. What do people around the world think about the threat of climate change and the promise of a new clean economy? ‘Now!’ is Something New on Outbeat Salon

Outbeat Salon introduces a brand new show this month. Outbeat Now! features hosts Jeff Basham, Joel Bellagio, and Greg Miraglia who will bring you the latest stories and information from the GLBT community in the North Bay and beyond. A regular part of Outbeat Now! will be Miraglia’s segment called “Outbeat Youth,” a program feature for and about GLBT youth and what is going on in our high schools, local colleges, and GLBT youth organizations. And Henry Butler brings his superb and energetic New Orleans tinged piano mastery back to the stage as well. Americana expands on Thursday nights

Bill Frater has held down Thursday nights on KRCB for many years with his Freight Train Boogie. Having recently retired from his gig at the post office, Bill now plans to hit the road a bit to celebrate his new freedom from the daily grind. That has opened the way for frequent substitute host, Linda Seabright to become a regular part of the mix, now alternating Thursday nights with On The Road Again, featuring her own brand of Americana and beyond. Linda is happy to join the talented and committed roster of programmers at KRCB. She is also a film and voiceover actress and a music journalist who loves researching anything to do with Americana and southern soul. Linda has interviewed many well-known artists including Elvis Costello, Duke Robillard and Allen Toussaint, and is a regular traveler to the New Orleans music scene. She welcomes listener emails at [email protected].

KRCB Volunteer of the Month Jim Lavaroni is one of KRCB-FM’s many volunteer radio hosts who contribute their knowledge and love of music to our station. Without them we wouldn’t have the variety of music programming that our listeners enjoy, from live Santa Rosa Symphony performances to impromptu drumming sessions on Jim’s show, Percussion Discussion, which is broadcast live at 10 pm on the second and fourth Thursdays of every month. In addition to “discussin’ the percussion,” Jim’s show features surprise guests, such as Raul Rico of Santana and recently the electroacoustic Indian alternative rock of Beautiful Losers. It may surprise some listeners to learn that Jim is a 30-year veteran of the Novato Police force, but he sees a logical connection between serving as a Police Lieutenant and hosting a radio show: both involve serving people. Jim always found a way to incorporate his interest in communications, from making training videos for the police force to radio broadcasting—first at KUSF and now at KRCB. When he isn’t hosting Percussion Discussion or volunteering elsewhere in the community, Jim is probably drumming in one of two bands: Wall of Rhythm or Heartlanguage (see www.heartlanguagemusic.com for more about Jim and the music he loves).
