One can be found at: http://www.eduplace.com/ss/maps/pdf/eur_country.pdf • Answer sheet per pair. INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Give learners a copy of a map of Europe. 2. Ask learners what they know about Europe. Note responses on the board or butcher paper. 3. Discuss reading maps, ask for hints from the learners. Responses might be: reading the legend, words, or shapes of the countries. 4. Advise learners they will be playing a map reading competition. 5. Divide the class into pairs. 6. Hand out answer sheet to each pair. 7. Read the rules to the class. 8. Select 10 cards and read the country name out one at a time, with 30 seconds between each card. 9. Go through answers with learners. Were there any countries or cities they had not heard of? What do they think the place might be like? RULES: • The tutor will read the name of a country and give learners 30 seconds to find the capital on the map and write down the answer. • Pairs will find 10 capitals. • The pair with the most correct will win.

RESOURCES: • “World famous in €urope” sheet. Print out a copy for yourself and one per pair of learners. • Answer sheet per pair. INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Advise learners they will be playing a competition to listen to the clues given and matching the clues given to the correct country. 2. Divide the class into pairs (can be the same pairs as for activity 1). 3. Hand out answer sheet to each pair (same as per activity 1). 4. Read the rules to the class. 5. Select 10 cards and read the Famous For clues out one at a time, with 30 seconds between each card. 6. Go through answers with learners. Did they learn anything about the countries? Do they have a better idea about what some of the places might be like? RULES: • The tutor will read the “Famous For” clues and give learners 30 seconds to find the country and write down the answer. • Skim through the names of the countries listed and think about what you might know already. • Scan down through the list to find words that match the clues. • Pairs will need to find 10 countries. • The pair with the most correct will win.

RESOURCES: • Four currency conversion cards sets (print out each set per group) • Questions sheet per person. INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Ask learners “What is Currency?”. Write responses on the whiteboard or butcher paper. 2. Discuss how currency has been used all over the world in different forms for thousands of years. From cocoa beans of the Mayans, to ancient silver, gold and copper coins, to today’s paper money. Currencies are issued by central banks of different countries. 3. We are going to learn about a relatively new currency called the Euro. It has been in use only since 2002, but 320 million people in 22 countries use it. We are going to learn about exchanging New Zealand dollars into Euro dollars. Tutor explains that we are going to use the Euro to learn currency conversion first because it is a it is a easy number to work out in our head: $1.00 NZD = €0.50 and €1.00 = $2.00 NZD, or each NZD is worth half of each Euro, and each Euro is worth double each NZD. 4. Hand out currency activity cards. 5. Learners to work in groups of 3-4. 6. Tutor works through the first question with the class: €0.50 Euro = $1.00 NZD
