SMALL PRINT—thanks to Campaign Teacher for index figures—100 used for April 2004—the year when the first UPS3 increment was paid

Independent of Government and not affiliated to any political party

ASK YOUR ATL AND NASUWT COLLEAGUES TO JOIN US IN ACTION TO PROTECT OUR PAY STRB Report on pay still delayed—we continue to wait for the “independent” School Teachers’ Review Body Report concerning the 3-year 2% pay deal imposed by the government. When the Report finally emerges the NUT will make its rigorous and powerful response, but what we do about it depends entirely on the NUT members in your school...if you believe you're paid too much and your salary needs to be pegged back, then do nothing. However, if you know your salary is being eroded and you want to try to do something about it—VOTE YES for strike action in the new year! “Unity in action at workplace level can really work” A member asks, “One of my PM objectives is to write a whole school policy for a responsibility normally covered by the DHT. Should I do it anyway?” Answer: NO—a whole school policy is disproportionate to the objectives set for other staff across the country. You should ask to meet your reviewer again to modify the scope/range of this objective—and contact the NUT for further advice

IT’S ANOTHER FAILURE FOR 30,000 ! THERE ARE THIRTY THOUSAND FEWER TLRS THAN MANAGEMENT ALLOWANCES... [AND NO UPS4 & 5]

Ed Balls is worried he may be asked to become the next Chancellor So...when my MA disappears and I’m not offered a TLR am I obliged to carry on with my task unpaid? NO and ask for a written reason why your school thinks you should!

“We need a union not in partnership with government but in partnership with teachers”

HOW SCARED SHOULD WE BE ? The news that Exeter will not become a unitary authority was greeted with relief in many quarters...unfortunately it’s not as simple as that. The government will now review all local government in the county of Devon and the outcome could be a pile of new unitary authorities [with an expanded Plymouth creeping into Devon] or a more calamitous single Devon unitary authority—as Cornwall will become. The uncertainty has been spread across the whole county. Parkside Community Technology College to close due to falling rolls… In an unwelcome Christmas present last week, staff at Parkside learnt that their college would close at the end of the summer term 2008. The teacher unions and the LA will work with staff to do all they can to assist those at risk of redundancy. Students may start moving to other schools in January. All Plymouth secondary schools could soon begin to feel the heat of falling rolls as the dip in pupil numbers moves from the primary sector into secondary. In another announcement, Stoke Damerel CC will expand by 2015 under the Building Schools for the Future initiative. We have been reassured on a number of occasions by the Director of Children's Services and others that there will be no Academy in Plymouth Plymouth,, so everyone will want to continue the community status of Stoke Damerel thereby ensuring that Every Child Matters Matters..

QUIZ Who said, “What is

the use of planning if all it does is plan to go nowhere? Serious questions need to be asked WHY all this planning is needed...for the teacher or the managers? If it is for the latter then you shouldn't be doing it?” Mick Waters QCA, and an ex-LA Adviser

New Academy schools in London have asked teachers to halve paid maternity leave and to work an extra 5 days a year—just thought you’d like to know...
