The journey of discernment has now taken another important step. The future story that was shaped from the input of our many prayer-share teams across Kentucky was creatively presented as a short drama. The drama was presented, affirmed and discussed at a gathering of the KBF in September. The final step is the Discernment Team taking the future story, along with the feedback from the KBF community, and building a strategic plan. Many thanks to all who have been involved and supportive of this critical moment of pause, prayer, and preparation. From the Discernment Team to the KBF staff, from the Coordinating Council to the prayer-share teams, you have demonstrated an openness to the Spirit and to each other. It is clear that the people who are the KBF believe we are in this together and hold a collective responsibility to both listen and act to fulfill God’s call to us. This discernment process has called for patience for a very different process. Yet, I have observed a healthy exchange and lively conversation. I listened to inspiring stories of deeper relationships that have been formed and fantastic creativity concerning what might yet be. The KBF is to be commended for taking this road less traveled.

KBF News November 2007

KBF News is a monthly newsletter of Kentucky Baptist Fellowship.

Third Annual Children’s Mission Day a Success On September 29, 2007 KBF held our 3rd annual KBF Children’s Mission day event with a mission education focus for children in grades 1-6. This year’s concentration was Bali, a small island in the Pacific Ocean. Matt Stalnaker was our guest missionary this year. Matt spent four months in Bali several years ago. The children learned from Matt about the music, religion and culture of Bali. He brought several pictures and a stringed musical instrument from the region.

The children experienced Bible study, recreation, missions and a craft. Each aspect of the day had a focus on Bali and the use of art in worship. The CBF missionary affiliates that work in Bali use music, dance, puppets and other art forms to work with the people there. So art as part of worship was a focal point in what the children learned throughout the day. Mark McClintock from PASSPORTkids! also contributed to our day. Mark has been with us since the beginning. Mark closed out the day with a puppet show and his amazing talent in ventriloquism, an impressive gift which the kids love to see every year. This year we had over 70 kids and adults from 8 churches participate. We hope you will be a part of Children’s Mission Day next year! We are a fellowship of churches and individuals who share a commitment to the Great Commission of Jesus Christ. Our mission is to equip and empower Kentucky Baptist churches and Christians, cultivate partnerships, and engage in missions.

Baptist Seminary of Kentucky marks 5-year anniversary The Baptist Seminary of Kentucky held a convocation to celebrate its five-year anniversary on September 8 at Lexington’s Calvary Baptist Church where the Seminary began. Dr. Greg Earwood, president of the seminary, spoke on “Pioneers in Faith: Walking Together.” The keynote speaker was Georgia pastor Dr. Emmanuel McCall, who is also vice president of the Baptist World Alliance and was the moderator of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship at its 2007 gathering. Dr. McCall stressed the importance of providing the theological resources necessary for ministerial students in this region during his message “Come and Dine.” At a luncheon preceding the Convocation, the Seminary recognized its founding trustees and its organizing group, The Committee for BSK. Now located on the campus of Lexington Theological Seminary, Baptist Seminary of Kentucky began its 6th year in August.

Alternative Gift Cards: Christmas Gifts with Meaning Highland Baptist Church in Louisville and Kentucky Baptist Fellowship are partnering, again this year, to provide alternative gift cards during the holiday season. This project will assist the Moroccan refugee ministry. “The alternative gift cards are a way to share the season of giving with friends and relatives without shopping at the malls and spending money on people who already have so much,” explains Terri Phelps of Highland Baptist Church. Alternative gift cards work by allowing church members to purchase greeting cards for various amounts. The card carries a simple phrase like “A Christmas gift in your honor has been given by [insert name] to purchase a blanket for an African refugee in Morocco.” The contents of each card vary according to the purchase amount: $5 for a blanket, $10 for a winter coat, or $25 for a month of food, to name a few. If your church (or you as an individual) would like to join in this meaningful Christmas project, contact John Lepper at the KBF office. The gift cards are available to any church choosing to participate.
