November 19, 2009 It has just been revealed that lobbyists for the health care industry wrote many of the speeches members of congress gave during the debate over health care. Is this a problem? Should we worry about this?

Homework: Would you have been a rebel or a loyalist?  Remember, both come with benefits and costs  Say clearly what side you would have been on and why 

Review of yesterday’s work  Q:

What was the crises in the British Empire?  A: The conflict between the Colonists and the British over who was going to rule the colonies

Review Q: What British policies in the 1760s led to rising resentment and resistance in the colonies?  The Proclamation Line of 1763, the Stamp Act, the Townshend Acts 

Review Q: What was the main provision of the tea act of 1773?  A: It gave the British East India Company a monopoly in selling tea to the American colonies 

Vocabulary Monopoly – being the only one allowed to do something  If you have a monopoly on a good or service it means you’re the only one allowed to sell it 

Natural Rights  Rights

no one can take away  For example – you have the right of free speech but not because the government lets you have it

Natural Rights The founders believed in natural rights  These ideas came from a thing called the Enlightenment  The Enlightenment was all about reason and being rational 
