not please God "in the flesh", so he remained no longer "in the flesh", not walking any longer "after the flesh", "The law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus - made (Paul) free from the law of sin and death" (Rom. 8:2). While the Roman Christians were still in their biological (fleshly) bodies, Paul made it clear that "ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you" (Rom. 8:9). The Jewish system, the NATURAL body of God, was about to die. "For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall (are about to) die" (Rom. 8:13). The SPIRITUAL body was about to be resurrected (1 Cor. 15:44). The kingdom of God was about to be taken away from the FLESHLY NATION of God and given to the SPIRITUAL NATION of God (Matt. 21:43). Indeed, "the kingdom of the world (had) become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he will reign for ever and ever" (New International Version, Rev. 11:15). Various prepositions are used in connection to "the flesh", such as, "after," "in," "of,", "to", "according to" and "by". It would do us good to consider how the Holy Spirit used the word apart from the usual biological word. The next time you see things concerning "the

flesh", such as, "destruction of", "pertaining to", "walking after", "minding things of", "provision for", "warring after", "infirmity of", "lust of", "perfection by," "sins of", "judged according to", "filth of", "spotted by" and "children of", please consider whether the Spirit used it in a biological sense or a "spiritual" sense. "But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God" for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned" (1 Cor. 2:14). Traditionally, Romans 8 has been admittedly a maze of difficulties for commentators. I believe the reason has been a failure to understand how Paul used the words "flesh" and "spirit" as well as discerning the change of the spiritual person from "law" to "grace".

One of the first principles which we need to understand is that we create apparent contradictions in the Scriptures by not understanding the difference between the "flesh" and the "spirit" as the two words are used in the Bible. These apparent contradictions lie in a failure to understand how Paul used the word "flesh," which is from the original word "flesh", which is from the original word "sarx", and how he used the word "pneuma", which is usually translated by our word "spirit".

Being a fleshly (biological) child of Abraham did not insure one of being saved or of being a child of God. "And think not to say within your selves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children to Abraham" (matt. 3:9).

The apostle Paul said in Romans 8:8, "So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God." This same apostle said in I Thessalonians 2:4, "But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts". Did Paul please God while he was in the flesh? Is there a contradiction here? This is a difficult subject to address, and all of must admit that we do not know all the answers. The road to understanding will always be under construction and full of potholes, but we should carefully tread forward. Perhaps a fundamental element in understanding these two words is to see how the same apostle used them in other places. Let us consider the context of Galatians 4:2131. Paul was speaking of the births of Ishmael (even though his name is not mentioned in the context) and Isaac. Verse 23 states, "but he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh, but he of the free woman was by promise." It is plain that Ishmael had fleshly parents, i.e., Hagar and Abraham. Is it not a fact that Isaac also had fleshly parents, i.e., Sarah and Abraham? It seems simple enough to understand that Paul here used the word "flesh" in a sense other than a biological sense. What would that be? In Galationas 4:29, Paul stated, "But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the SPIRIT, even so it is now." When these two verses are placed together, one can see that Paul is saying that Isaac was born by PROMISE, according to the SPIRIT. Ishmael was not born by promise of the Holy Spirit, as far as we know. But only Ishmael was born after the FLESH, so the word "flesh" cannot mean simply a biological process in these verses. In most of Paul's writings, he used the word "flesh" in contrast to the "spirit". It should be obvious from verse 29 that when Paul was writing, some were physically, biologically alive who had been "born after the flesh", and were persecuting those who followed "after the

spirit". As Ishmael persecuted Isaac, so the natural seed of Abraham were persecuting the spiritual seed of Abraham (who were Christians). Ishmael begat twelve "princes" and became a great nation (according to the FLESH, Genesis 17:20) while Isaac begat Jacob who had twelve sons and became a great nation (according to the SPIRIT). It was through natural descendants of Isaac that the Savior, Jesus, was to come. He would give the promised blessing to the SPIRITUAL seed of Abraham, not his FLESHLY seed. Paul had just completed making it extremely clear to those Christians in Galatia that they were the SPIRITUAL seed of Abraham, "And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise." The promise was, "in thy seed shall all of the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice" (Genesis 22:18). This SPIRITUAL blessing (promise) given to the SPIRITS of men, by the SPIRIT of God was the resurrection to eternal life. Biologically speaking, both Ishmael and Isaa were born after the flesh. Spiritually speaking, only Ishmael was born after the flesh. It is in this spiritual sense that Paul used the word "flesh" in Rom. 8:8 and Gal. 4:29. I believe that it was in the sense of contrast between "flesh and spirit" that Paul most always used the word "flesh". Those "in the flesh," i.e., the fleshly descendants of Jacob (Israelites) could not please God. Being a fleshly (biological) child of Abraham did not insure one of being saved or of being a child of God. The way Paul escaped "the flesh" was by becoming a Christian. "There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit" (Rom. 8:1). While Paul was in that fleshly system, he could not please God. "For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death" (Rom 7:5). Paul is not saying that he was no longer in his own physical, natural, biological body (flesh), but that he no longer served God by means of law in that natural, fleshly system. "But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the old ness of the letter" (Rom 7:6). He could
