Competency Section

In this section you are requested to provide responses to the questions which follow. We have identified a number of competencies that are critical for success in Young Leader roles and your responses to these questions will help us gauge your suitability. Note :q        You are requested to respond in terms of specific examples q The example should be specific to the situation asked for in every section q        Please talk about your individual role/contribution in each of the examples even if it is a role played within a team q If you are short listed for interview, the examples you give here will be explored in further detail q        There is no right or wrong answer as such.

Section 1 Describe a situation when you had to accomplish an objective in an ambiguous situation. SAMIKSHA is one of the events in NITIE, where in stalwarts from industry would come down to the campus for a "PANEL DISCUSSION”. It was my idea of organizing of the “SAMIKSHA QUIZ”, in SCM which was for the first time in the NITIE history held 2 days before to the panel discussion and my coordinator was not interested in that activity because of his non-availability for event. It was a tough call for me and if I would say no then the event will be scrapped which I don’t want to happen. I dared and committed to him for handling the event irrespective of his presence. I assured him that I would handle each and every minute activities like Poster design, Setting of the Paper, IT requirements, Pilot Run, Spreading the word across the B-schools to get noted and getting their entries for the event which are the tasks i need to coordinate and accomplish.

What did you do to handle the situation ? What was the outcome?

I handled the event by taking the help of ‘KAIZEN’ team for setting of the Question paper in SCM for the first time in NITIE, Junior Samiksha Team for the Poster designing and the Docket Preparation. Sysco Team for the Site Updatation and ensuring a Pilot-run before the real bonanza had happened. Result: It was a huge success as the entries crossed 150 in number from the entire top notch B-Schools across India.

What were your learnings? Please specify 1 - 2 key learnings from the situation.

 Commitment is the key for my achievement which helped to handle all the mishaps in a short span.  Ensuring and winning the Credibility and Trustworthiness of my coordinator.  Distribution of the task appropriately which signifies Team Work and Team Spirit crucial for the success of an endeavor.

Section 2 Describe a task/situation that you faced during your summer internship / past work experience which you consider as a complex problem. Please elaborate on the relevance of the problem to your role and the organisation. At Intergraph, where I worked as Software Analyst and there were 2 approaches for developing the scripts: 1. Descriptive Technique - laborious & cumbersome. 2. Object Repository (OR) Technique- Feature of Testing tool QTP (Quick Test Professional). I would say it as complex because it is like deciding the framework upon which the whole suit of scripts is being built.

How did you approach the problem ? What options did you generate to solve the problem? Actions: I used a data based approach for decision making, listed pros and cons, made a presentation to convince my Manager and even the Client in US for Design Approval of OR Technique who were in strong belief of first approach. Results: Development of Scripts was done by OR approach Achievements: I was awarded the “PAT ON THE BACK” award for this accomplishment.

What were your key learnings from the situation ? What would you do in case you were to handle a similar problem in future? I believe that if the base is strong then the building that one constructs is going to be strong. Similarly the design of Framework was like a base for the scripts developed. Exploring the things and finding out the short and simple techniques for the complex problems. I would even call it KISS (keep it simple and straight) Experiences give learning and in case I fall in same situation I would deploy my “KISS” formula into action.

Section 3

Mention "one" personal improvement area that you have worked upon in the last one year. Why do you feel the above area was an improvement area for you ? I consider myself to be the part of NITIE Family where in we organize and conduct many events. I being part of “EVENT MANAGEMENT TEAM” had led the initiative of association of Vendor Relationship Management for the different stationary, items, goods right from a needle to the Business Visionary Award (Memento) that we purchase from the Vendor. With the advent of the mobile Revolution, with a single phone call I can arrange many things sitting in my room. The biggest take away for me is “INTER-PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT” and how to handle, manage and finalize the deals with a commitment. Having got imbibed into the NITIE fraternity and with a sense of belongingness, I found it as an opportunity for improving not just my InterPersonal skills and relations but even for the College.

How did you identify the improvement area? What did you do to improve yourself in this area ? In NITIE, Lot of purchases takes place for the events and the expenditure for the event like LAKSHYA –Flagship event of PGDIE, is around 15 lakhs. This is of one mega events, and there are many minor events all long the year and every event is important. Instead of different people making different purchases at different places at different points of time, I felt why won’t we have a contractual agreement with a single vendor in order to serve our needs at the same time it helps to gain Economies of Scale which will be a mutual beneficial act for both the parties as it is win-win situation for both of us. In addition it creates trust worthiness and loyalty.

Do you think you have achieved your objective? What makes you think so ? “Theoretical Knowledge without practical application is Futile” I was able to apply the concepts of VMI (Vendor Managed Inventory) where in there will be association between the supplier and Retailer. First implemented by P&G with Wal-mart. I elaborated the above concept in the field of application that I am involved and had created a certain amount of savings which I feel is a great accomplishment at a student level.
