Nippon Steel U.S.A., Inc. 16th Annual Art Appreciation Program: Presidential Award Exhibitions 2008 - 2009 Nippon Steel U.S.A., Inc. is a subsidiary of the Nippon Steel Corporation, the most profitable steel company in the world. The Japan-based Corporation is the world’s second-largest steel producer by volume. The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and Nippon Steel U.S.A., Inc. are pleased to announce that Nippon Steel, as part of its seventy-year history of support for the visual and performing arts, is sponsoring the Sixteenth annual set of exhibitions of the artwork of SAIC students. Every year 40 works are selected from more than 400 slide submissions. These exhibitions, two each year, will be held at a gallery in the Nippon Steel U.S.A., Inc. Chicago offices at 900 North Michigan Avenue. The gallery is open to visitors by appointment, opening reception is held at Four Seasons Hotel to introduce student participants to the Chicago corporate community, and a color pamphlet highlighting the selected artists and their work that will be circulated in conjunction with the exhibition. In addition, exhibition participants will receive an award, sharing a total of four thousand dollars to be awarded in this, the sixteenth year of the Nippon Steel U.S.A. Art Appreciation Program. This Presidential Award, averaging $100 for each accepted piece, will be applied to tuition and will be handled through the Financial Aid Office and the Student's Account Office.

This year, Nippon Steel U.S.A., Inc. will be awarding a total of $1,000 in purchase awards. This award/awards, chosen by Nippon Steel personnel, will be used for the purchase of student work to be added to the corporation’s permanent collection. The first exhibition will run from December 2008 through May 2009 and the second exhibition from May 2009 through November 2009. Exact dates will be announced later. Preliminary Jurying: Preliminary jurying will be by slide submission only. The preliminary jury, made up of SAIC faculty and staff, will review all slides submitted to determine which entries will be eligible for final jurying. Final Jurying: The final determinations will be made by personnel from Nippon Steel U.S.A., Inc. in consultation with the chair of the preliminary jury. Approximately 20 pieces will be selected for each exhibition.

READ THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY!!! Entry Rules: 1. All students currently enrolled in a degree program at SAIC may enter. 2. Types of work eligible: painting, drawing, photographs, prints and two-dimensional fiber and ceramics (all objects must be able to hang flat against a wall). 3. Entrants may submit up to 10 slides; these will be numbered and labeled “TOP” (see diagram on page 5). They must be presented in a plastic sheet and clearly labeled. Each slide sheet has to be accompanied by a slide description list that identifies each slide by number and indicates title, dimensions, medium, date completed, and sale price (indicate if not for sale). Even if the work is not for sale, values for insurance purposes must be listed (max. $2000). Improperly presented entries will not be considered. Keep accurate records so that you will know which piece has been accepted. This is particularly true if all of your work is untitled. 4. Dimensions: not to exceed 4’x5’- max. weight 35 lbs.. Nippon Steel U.S.A., Inc. can accommodate no more than four works of these dimensions, and may choose to select smaller works entirely. Approximately 8-15 works of smaller sizes can fit into the Nippon Steel offices. 5. More than one work by the same student may be selected. 6. In general, students will provide their own framing or final presentation. Nippon Steel U.S.A., Inc. will be responsible for hanging the artwork under the guidance of a liaison from SAIC. Students will be responsible for transporting their work both to and from Nippon Steel offices. Any apparatus necessary for complicated or unusual installation must be included. All work must be ready for hanging. 7. Exhibitors must sign a contract with Nippon Steel U.S.A., Inc.

8. No work may be removed prior to the close of the exhibition. Accepted art is contracted to remain on exhibit at the Nippon Steel offices throughout the duration of the exhibition.

CALENDAR: October 10, 2008

Submission of slides to SAIC for both shows. Slides should be delivered to the Rymer Gallery by 4 P.M., Friday, October 10.

No late entries will be considered. October 23, 2008

Final Selection: All students will be notified ASAP. Slide location pick up of rejected work will be indicated in jury notification letter. Slides of accepted work will be retained for catalogue reproduction. Do not call for jury results. You will be notified via email and letter as soon as possible after the selection process.

Agreement: Submission of an entry to this exhibition constitutes an agreement by the entrant to the conditions set forth in this prospectus and for the reproduction of their work for all publicity and publications connected with Nippon Steel U.S.A., Inc. or the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Nippon Steel U.S.A., Inc. reserves the right to install accepted works in any manner deemed necessary for exhibition or security reasons.
